What Are Your Three Favorite Timelys?
2 2

64 posts in this topic

It's nearly impossible to pick your favorite three from all the classic Timely covers, but I think I finally settled on mine. Now, for this exercise you don't have to own the books, just covet them. And covet I do mightily!! :cloud9:

In no particular order, and with apologies to Cap 1 and a dozen Marvel Mystery's, here are my three, courtesy of Atlas Tales:

There was NO way Cap wasn't going to make the cut, and he was going to be punching somebody on the cover:

This Schomburg masterpiece has fascinated me since my earliest days in the hobby - for those of you lucky enough to own a copy, do you ever tire of drooling over it?

And with all the classic battles between the Torch and Subby, I feel this rounds out my top three perfectly:

There you have it: my top three favorite Timely covers. Now, tell me what I got wrong!  :nyah:

How can you get it wrong?  (shrug)

There are so many great covers that it's a tough call, but these'll do in a pinch (for me)...

Liked the Death Ray cover so much I own two copies & Alex's gouache recreation of it...

Still, when it comes right down to it I can't settle on three.  Thirty maybe, ...but three? No way! lol

Obviously, I covet Marvel Comics 1 and Captain America Comics 1 above all others. But here in the world, I’ll keep things more realistic.
When I started taking an interest in GA, I wrote a list with a few attainable books. I’ve never owned any of them, but my jones for them persists!

Marvel Comics 8 (first hero fight!)

Marvel Comics 13 (first Vision by S&K)

All-Winners 1 (Only comic with Everett subby, Burgos Torch, S&K Cap, a Schomburg cover, and a quasi first appearance)

These were not pipe dreams in 1989!

Yep, thirty would alleviate a lot of stress when narrowing it down! You picked two of my favorite Marvel Mysterys - I could've gone with 12, 29, 46, 51 on a given day as well. And I love the Human Torch 5 almost as much as 8, and I think classics like 12 and 23 would be worthy contenders. Such wonderful grist for the mill!

Solid choices and logic! You picked an Angel MMC book: Martin Goodman would be proud. I love All Winners 1 as well: it's like a Timely All-Star 3 of sorts.  :luhv:

Wow, very tough choice...I decided to pick only ones I own and without looking through mine, these are the 3 that popped to mind right off. And, if I were to pull out the boxes, I'm sure these could change pretty easily.

Solid choices all, RM!! Of course you're lucky to own your top three. I own - let's see - exactly none of my top three!

p.s.  Zep cover...  :cloud9:

My criteria was to only pick ones I actually own. If not, my choices would be probably a little different. But the Zep cover MM would probably still be there.

As I indicated, that's nice criteria to have. My top three would include a Silly Tunes or Millie if I had to own them!  :nyah:

Solid, solid choices for sure. I hate that nary a Marvel Mystery made my list. That USA 7 is such a fantastic cover, and I can think of two or three All Winners that would definitely vie if I wanted the headache of picking my top ten.

Going to stick to the ones I own, but there are a few I don't have that might top them. I thing Red Raven is super underrated...I LOVE that cover.

Great books! I agree that Red Raven is currently under-rated. I also love that cover. I think it got cold when Kirby gave way to some of the more recently favored crop of artists. It was once a top 20 book.

Of those discussed thus far here are some alternate Toppers from my collection.

Keeping to the guidelines I put these in spoilers (...and because I like to tease):

This is why it's so tough choosing the best, but it's a good start to my Top 30, ...with the earlier three that makes 14!

I'm glad these great books have been mentioned or included in other's top drawer Timely lists. (thumbsu
