This is not a River City copy.  The arrival date (1-4) is correct, but the form and penmanship of the marking is not consistent with any RCs I've ever seen.  Here are scans of the actual River City SA #17 -- just before and just after Mark Wilson gave it the CPR treatment in an attempt to squeeze a CGC 9.6 out of an already beautiful CGC 9.4.  Sad.

High grade books are often at higher risks due to greed. When you consider they are already an endangered species due to low numbers there never seems to be a lack of “poachers” trying to get even more out of their pristine state with often disastrous consequences like above. It’s bad enough people are already dumb enough to spill coke or let animals pee on them...:eyeroll:

The Nova Scotia pedigree seems to have been a DC collection, so it doesn’t seem to fit, but does this look it could be a “pedigree found in the wild”?  It was slabbed in 2004. Unless brought to their attention, CGC might not notice a pedigree, I’m guessing.

There are Nova Scotia Timelys.

Thanks.

The amount I know about identifying a pedigree is zippo. I’ve owned em, but someone else had already identified them as pedigrees.  Is there anyone who even would know for sure?

I just found a Nova Scotia thread, so I’ll scroll thru that. And I found a 2009 thread where Matt Nelson was just starting to gather info on a book about pedigrees, but I don’t yet know if he actually did.

Almost all the NS golden age books were from 1939-40.  Heritage has a Black Terror 3, which was from 1943.  So while possible, it seems unlikely that it's from that collection.  Jim Payette is very open to email inquiries, it would be worth the time to ask him.

Is it possible I’ve stumbled onto some pedigree books in the wild? Bought this one from my local shop, who picked it up from an original owner collection of a large amount of golden and silver age Strange Adventures out here in California. I bought the bulk of them and just realized the marking in the top left corner on this one. Could it be a lost River City?

Even if they are not pedigrees they are nice to have.  What LCS in Los Angeles Has books like these?  Most of the ones I have been to don't even have mush older SA  let alone ANY Gold

I have wondered if this might be a Cosmic Aeroplane, but I'm not about to crack it open to find out! [Surely CGC would have noticed if the interior pages had lots of ticks?] Anyway, here it is for comment.

Fight Comics #44 CGC 9.2.jpg

Are you considering the grease pencil check in the upper left corner the reason?  If so, probably not. The Cosmic check is always a thin light pencil check if it is even there at all.

And yes, there is no denying the marks inside if they are there.

Who cares. That color is blinding!

He managed to squeeze some of the white out of the pages as well. Wilson deserves blame for being greedy, but so does a market that assigns appreciably more value to a 9.6 over a 9.4 though the difference is marginal if even measurable from book to book. There are definitely books worthy of pressing consideration, and where the risks of damage are fairly minimal, the sort of bends, dents and warpage that if pressed out can elevate a book several grades and noticeably improve appeal as well as value, but it's sad that the rewards for pressing an already exceptional book are potentially such that someone would risk damaging it to do so, it's the same sort of mentality that led to micro-trimming.

I guess I'll never really understand the desire for chasing perfection in cheaply mass produced collectibles, and comics are far from the only hobby subject to this. Up to a certain point I appreciate the appeal of copies that seem almost newsstand fresh, particularly when they are from the 1950s or before, but those same books often had very minor handling flaws while sitting on the newsstand that bothered absolutely no one at the time. There's also the irony that sometimes a book that only warrants an 8.0 or so due to an imperfection or two can have a fresh look and feel that can be lacking in a structurally superior but more aged appearing 9.4

My feelings exactly. One of the reasons why collectors seek out and pay more for pedigrees is that OO originality.

These books have survived the ravages of time only because someone thought enough to save and preserve them for all of us and true love of the books themselves.

To squeeze and manupilate them for a small percentage of a number is just despicable and irresponsible.

But we have no one to blame other than ourselves…

The Nova Scotia pedigree contained other publishers besides DC.  I own two Nova Scotia's, both purchased from Payette.  One is a DC, the other a St. John.  Neither has any marking on the cover.  The only way I know they are Nova Scotia's is because Payette said so on his price list.

Can anyone here help confirm if the book I bought is a Nova Scotia pedigree? It seems to fit the time frame and the marking looks on point (though slightly faded, or possibly lightened due to somebody dry cleaning it), though I'm not sure if there is a list of all books accounted for in that pedigree or not.
