Are Bronze CGC 9.2-9.6 Prices Tanking?

168 posts in this topic

I think even with the horror stuff, the potential for a downturn is large and impending. I mean, we all know that we see the same names bidding up the bronze horror slabs on ebay, vault auctions, etc. How many folks are actively and consistently bidding up these books at their current prices? A dozen? Fifteen? That's hardly enough people to sustain a market. There should be enough product to go around to satisfy a dozen people, and what happens when those folks have finished their runs? (As several have or are near doing). Doesn't bode well, IMO.

Well, for the 4 years I've been collecting BA horror, when one nutcase who bids crazy money leaves another one takes their place (I've been the consistent nutcase 27_laughing.gif). I agree that they may soften somewhat but from what I've seen prices have been consistent over the past few years--although prices have skyrocketed recently. (example: I bought a Weird Mystery Tales #2 CGC 9.4 three years ago for $20. Now, someone wants $170 for the book on eBay).

Except for the "low" high grade CGC books I'm selling now (mainly to get space back), there will be no dumping of books. I still have a long way to go as well with my collection--if I do stop purchasing it will be to take a break. I'm "just saying no" to the "multiple madness", as I have all the time in the world to complete my collection. Despite some high prices this genre is still reasonably priced as compared to superhero and/or keys.If prices do tank this will be the best time to stock up. In either case, I win. It's just understanding the difference between "need" (which no one needs this stuff) vs. "want".

Sterl would know better than me, but as I said before, I do not think HG BA war and horror are tanking at all. Superheroes, sure. But as Sterl said, satisfy one collector and another is born. I think there is a slow moving trend that has alot of superhero collectors finding a new interest with these books. Plus, being out of the limelight for so long (and yes many collectors are still unfamiliar with these books even though they are in the spotlight now more than ever) they seem kind of fresh at this point. At least that's how I see it. I'd be more worried about the values of the 9.6/9.8 ASM and X-Men than I would be the 9.6/9.8 HoM and WWT.

Maybe....fewer in number relative to demand. It was no challenge for me to assemble about 35% of an ASM HG run in no time--to me that's boring. It will be interesting to see with the high Rosa prices on HTF in HG books if that changes. Personally, I know of about 6 people who aggressively bid on this stuff...and I'm always bumping heads. It's gotten to the point that I try to pre-arrange who bids on what so we can do damage control. crazy.gif

Exactly, I know about the same number of folks (I'm guessing in several instance we know the same people) who are in the bidding wars on these books. This is what concerns me, and I just can't automatically accept the notion that "one collector is satisfied, and another is born." And even if that's true, this is bronze we're talking about...more often than not, there's going to be product to go around.

I also have a hard time accepting the notion that HG superhero will tank while horror will have staying power. And this is coming from a guy who, with the exceptions of Batman and the Spectre (and the original JSA), is hardly a superhero guy. I tend to think of the folks on these boards as being part of a "collecting elite"...not necessarily in terms of dollars spent, but in terms of having good taste (that's a compliment, peeps!). I'm not so convinced that the majority of the comic-buying world is as equally savvy in their buying habits. As with a lot of other fields and hobbys, popularism and mediocirity have a tendency to float to the top. I know a fair number of dealers who won't touch bronze horror (even though they might love the books themselves), simply because it's not conducive to their customers' wants...this might in many cases have something to do with geography, too.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm knocking anybody...if I ever opt to sell the lion's share of my HG pre-code horror (which I doubt!), I've certainly painted myself in a similar corner. Wonderful , pricey books...a dream for the eclectic collector, but not so easy to move in a pinch.

Mmmm High grade war books....must have...heck i must have any and as much as possible as long as they are in a respectable vg or better. These books have great stories and art i especially love kubert in WWT.I myself have just jumped from buying Marvel superhero to these dc war books.I enjoy the challenge of trying to find nice copies unlinke how you can go out and buy a complete run of Superhero books in high grade with little effort.Just got my WWT #64 Don Rosa copy in today.I notice a few high grade cgc WWT's were put up on ebay last night as well as Sterling talking about damage control. Are any of these books on your list? it's hard for me to know what to pay for these because there just arent that many.Do you have any CGC'd WWt's for sale Sterling? cant type anymore...must get back to Ebay

Just what I was talking about earlier. Another superhero convert to DC horror or war. thumbsup2.gif Just in case you or anyone is interested, I do have a WWT #97 in CGC 9.4 OW/W and a WWT #100 in CGC 9.6 White if anyone wants to make an offer. Both freshly graded about a month ago. I also have half a dozen or so raw Don Rosa WWTs that are quite nice, a few heading to CGC most likely.

Check your Pm.I am also on the lookout for decent reading copies from Vg up to 9.2 raw copies if you have any bulk laying around.

I have lots. Many copies of WWT ranging from raw 7.0 to 9.2. Not all by any means, but quite a few with many dupes. Not looking to blow them out, but will take serious offers. Let me know what issues you are looking for including grade requirements and I'll see what I can do. Just checked my Don Rosa WWTs. Oddly enough I have several nice copies in the 30s, then nothing until over #100.

Bronze Age assumes 1970-1979.

Each graph below looks at all sales for Bronze books (9.2-9.6 grade), for each Quarter (every 3 months, starting with July 2002 and ending June 2005) and determines an average value per book (based on the total number of books sold for that quarter). To determine if there are any bumps due to extraordinary high sales, there is a second average that takes out the top sales (may vary depending on the overall quantity). The lines are represented on the graph as blue and red respectively.

GPA Rocks, its not perfect but I think there is an effort to always get better and find more legit sources etc. So it looks like BA is coming back down, or levelling off would be better.

ASM as always swims up stream. Even though I have let my subscription lapse because I have exited the HG slab maket, I do enjoy the information - while not absolute, its definitely a very useful tool in the repitoire of the collector.

i'm not sure what those numbers mean other than there being a decent amount of volume as of late, although the average price per book goes up... what does that mean? could be more 9.6s selling than 2 years ago, but perhaps at lower prices, whereas 2 years ago there was a lot more volume of 9.2s? pretty hard to get any hard data.

lots of volume is better than no volume. shows the stuff sells, even if you aren't getting what you want.
