Out of this world!!!  :kidaround:

Yes indeed. It's all getting a little silly. The obvious reason (to me at least) is probably something to do with the very high cost of original Silver Age books. I'm glad that I read them all in the 60s, I certainly could not afford to buy them at today's prices.

Did the plate come with any proofs this time?

4 plates and a cover proof. I'll scan them up tomorrow

It looks as if you need to give that Black plate a little oil.  Some light surface rust beginning...

Morning :)

I thought it was high time I treated myself to something Classy. What better something than this lot:

You can't beat a pre/post decimal priced Spider-Alan :cloud9:

It's always time Steve. Because you're worth it.

I'm not certain, but I don't think so Yorick. It's smooth to the touch and just looks like clean, shiny metal to me. Ask me again in a few years when I open it up and a load of dust falls out

Anyway, these plate sets are lovely things to hold. To know that they were used in production, and that Alan likely had his ink stained mits all over them, is a nice thing to ponder.

Here is the 'cover proof' - no notes or production writing, alas (poor Yorick), but still a nice thing:

The certificate, signed by Mister Class himself, a few years ago (I wonder how he's doing?):

And the four printing plates:

The sets are quite expensive - this one cost me £85 before posting - but as a fan of AC, I think that's reasonable to own a unique item. And being a Spidey cover makes it all the better, as he was always my favourite growing up and that will make it more attractive to future buyers if I ever get to that position.

I've got three sets now - two Spideys and a Charlie. I'll probably leave it at that now.

It's nice to see again how the half tone printing effect works - you can see here where the magenta plate is smooth for full colour (the top half of Spidey), and dappled for fading / half colour (the bottom half):

Very cool :)

It LOOKS like AC could have cut the book to standard US dimensions, but what fun would that be?!!  (:

I was thinking there should be a notched out section of the black plate for the issue number and price, but I guess this is the only time he used this cover.

I think it was, yes. Odd given how many times some other books got recycled
