I'll say this; I don't know about the market overall, but I'm not getting many steals on CLink and ebay like I expected! There was a dip this summer when I was able to pick up a lot of drek on the cheap, but the last couple of sessions, where I expected to steal a few more, ended as strongly as ever. And I'm talking about really common junk that I'm chasing almost strictly due to nostalgia. Thought it would be a good time to stock up, but...not so much.

I shopped heavily on the last two CLink auctions and got zero "deals". Everything I big on ended up selling significantly higher than previous sales.

This is the part of your statement that puzzles me. How is the Russian invasion and accompanying energy disruption USA’s fault? Seems to me the USA has stepped up.

The usual suspects are holding since everyone figures bigger silver and GA keys are the best choice to protect your investment. It is the run fills and more recent books that are taking a massive tumble right now. The first four of my books that closed in the current CL auction went for about half of what I was hoping for and I regret putting them up for auction. In the end I know my bigger books will do alright though and hopefully it will all come out in the wash.

I believe he signed over 14K books during last year's signature event and I've seen many sloppy sigs arise from there.  I doubt any of the sigs will look the same way he signed on the label.

You're talking to someone who has devoted virtually every post in the past two years to excitedly and ceaselessly predicting the economic collapse of civilization, and joyously celebrating any time there is a hint of world news pointing to economic downturn.

Yes,  companies will really feel the pain during the holiday season when consumer spending will be much lower than previous years.  I expect huge discounts on some items to move them.

This pretty much mirrors my experience. I don't doubt that some sellers took a bath, but I haven't seen any big dips on the books I'm looking for and those books are nothing fancy.

Slightly off-topic, but regardless of the state of the economy, speaking only from my own experience as a consumer, there really isn't much I get excited about buying any more.  When the holidays come around and it's time to go shopping, I am completely miserable.  It's the same slog every year, trying to find gifts for people and eventually settling for a pile of random things that add up to a dollar amount that seems right.

I think back to the '90s (which is now 25-30 years ago) and I was already starting to realize then that every year I was just walking around the mall and trying to figure out who's getting CDs or DVDs from Best Buy, who's getting a basket of junk they'll never use from Bath & Body Works, who's getting a random item from that vaguely ethnic/indigenous store that was really made in China, who's getting Godiva chocolates, who's getting a gag gift from the calendar kiosk (I once bought my mom the sexy fireman one, that went over like a lead balloon) and on and on and on.  For those in my family who actually read, which isn't many, I would always try to buy interesting books.  And of course there would be plenty of clothing, all of it new and none of it needed.

By now I have pretty much everything I need and I get exhausted when people ask what I want for my birthday or Christmas.  JIM #83 in 9.0 please!  But seriously there's not much I really need and the same is true for just about everyone else.  Entire gift categories (see CDs and DVDs, above) don't even make sense any more, and since the pandemic I feel something has really reset in people's minds when it comes to buying new clothing.  I already have a closet chock full of dress shirts, pants, sport coats, sweaters ... I have enough V necks to open my own store.  Meanwhile I am working from home and wearing t-shirts and jeans every day anyway.

I don't want to speak for anyone else but I am just sick of consumerism -- the endless piles of carp that I don't need -- and I suspect a lot of other people are too.  I like spending my money on experiences (travel, museums, concerts, sporting events, great restaurants), or on home improvements that genuinely make our lives better ... plus of course I spend (invest, dammit!) on collectibles as well.  And I love putting my money into my kids and their future.

So when I hear the state of the economy summed up based on what retailers are pulling in over the holidays, I do wonder if we are getting it wrong by assuming that people's interest in what those retailers have to sell is constant and the only variable is how much money they have to spend.  Maybe people are simply starting to realize what a waste of money most of it is.
