I dont agree. While the comment was pretty racist, people have to take it upon themselves to have an open dialog and educate.

I own several Tintin, Costo Maltese, and all others that have stereotyped people but it gave me many different perspectives. It destroys the valuable viable information that is part of the history. We can correct our mistakes or can learn from it.  My family went to Chicago Cultural Center and I didn't know there is an exhibition of old Chicago comics upstairs. I never knew there is a black newspaper that included many black comic strips in Chicago. The black artists had to write everything that is offensive by white people. Also, I never knew the lesbian comic strip - Good Bye Kissing (it's short life and the writer/artist remained aanonymous - we will NEVER know who wrote and drew).  There are so many things to learn about the comic strips in their times and way of life. It was very educational and informative. The old information is essential to me and my family.  If I wanted to be a writer or artist, I would pick 1930's Era for my story. It's obvious that I need to gather the old information from 1930's.  If all information is burned, it's all lost.

I can understand those people have expressed their angers and wanted to close their old wounds but not burning the valuable sources.  Yes, Disney has brought up many negatives and stereotypes that have misled many different cultures but burn them up - frankly no. Keep the information that has given us the lessons and corrected ourselves.  One again, it's up to our judgement.

Perhaps my statement wasn’t understood?

Im saying as a white person, my opinions on the matter shouldn’t matter. Nor should they be the ones people listen to. I’d want to listen to what First Nations people think and respect their thoughts about this. I believe they have the right to decide if burning said books is a good idea, not myself or anyone else who is not First Nations….

Don't worry about that. Don't rub yourself in a wrong way.  Just say nothing. Let them say something to you. I have few friends are Native Americans. We greet and hug each other. Think nothing but give them love equally.

Well, FWIW, have any of you guys read new comics lately?  Those things are giving young boys and girls some very bad ideas and should definitely be burned to protect our innocent children from being seduced by these awful ideas.

I'm against burning books.  It's a sign of weakness in your ability to reason with others.  I'm also against assuming that individuals within Indigenous groups all think the same way, or hold the same opinions as each other, or as other such groups.  These groups are made up of diverse individuals, just as any other group of humans.  For example, when the Washington Football Team was forced to abandon it's name/mascot, there were plenty of Native Americans who were fans of the team and/or who didn't want or see a reason to change the name.  The opinions of these Native Americans were seen as having no value for a reason which is obvious but which I'll leave to your imagination.  I expect that there are plenty of First Peoples, Indigenous Peoples, Native Americans, etc who have absolutely no problem with the books others feel must be burned, and are not offended or feel they've been personally harmed in any way by these works of fiction.  Hopefully emotional maturity will win out.  For a change.

Censorship is rubbish.

Art, literature ect. Done many years ago were done with different values.

We as the human race have evolved since then.

Keeping past works helps us educate where we once were and how far we have moved on.

Once we have finished burning  tin tins then what's next for the fire?

Will comic book collectors need to burn their Timelys because during world war 2 the German and Japanese were not drawn and featured in a favourable light?

Will we need to go back further and burn classic English literature because they were written at a time where the author and readers had different values back then?

Do we need to burn Shakespeare as well?

How much knowledge was completely lost in that fire? How long did it take humanity to regain, if it ever did, the knowledge burned in that fire.

We need these reminders from the past of how easy it is to look at anyone different than ourselves as less than.

Should we be proud of the evils of our past? No, but we should never forget them.

Cushioning people from the terrible consequences of warfare, and social or xenophobic prejudice permits reoccurrence.  Rather than distancing physically from the historical issue, here by book burning, or by hiding material away from the public in archives,  I believe you only get progress by instilling shame, horror, contempt for such issues, which requires the evidence to continue existing, and be easily accessed and confronted and denounced, generation after generation.

It amazes me the unwillingness people have to discuss difficult issues.

For me, it's easy to point out just how different things were at a point in time. I think it's easy for people to ACCEPT things were different at a point in time.

Humanity is dynamic, just like the world around us is. The times where humanity has tried to stand still were called the Dark Ages for a reason
