Thought I would share some from Friday the 13th and Halloween. The sealed Halloween II disc is a RCA CED disc which went to the way side in the mid to late 80's unlike the more traditional laserdisc which lasted until 2000.

Friday the 13th parts 1, 2 7,8. (Japanese uncut 1 and 7)

Halloween 1 CAV and CLD Criterion, Halloween H20 DTS and regular

 

These are great! Horror fans are some of the most dedicated collectors around, and they definitely lead the way on VHS and laser prices, soundtracks, posters, and any other related media. I used to have a lot of this stuff, but ended up selling most of it to focus on my comics and vintage toy collections. I do love it so, though.

Because the porn industry was backing HD-DVD. They're the reason we got VHS, so many features (at first) on DVD's, and it seemed likely they'd win again. Of course, history played out differently. I bought a drive that played both, and got a fair few HDDVDs cheap, which I've still got. 

VHS-wise, one I've still got somewhere is the Gen13 animated film. It was M-rated and iirc only ever released in Australia, in very limited numbers. I only saw a single copy for sale, the one I purchased. I've been unable to find the film anywhere on the net, and I'd really love to see it again. I remember it as being below average at the time, and would like to see how it holds up all these years later. It's obviously unsealed, but I wonder what a sealed copy would go for? Not too many people who probably even remember Gen13 today.

Not sure on that. I think it was before streaming/hub sites really got it right for consumers. So it was a very different market. Could be wrong on that. 

Edit: I might be. I vaguely remember a personal story involving pornhub and I remember that as before 2010, so I guess they were there.

I was in high school in 2006, and both paid and free services were definitely widespread.

There was a nice raw early/1st print attack of the killer tomatoes on e bay at auction today

knew it would go 4 figures and intended to bid aggressively but then went over $2000 with less than 30 seconds and ended at over $5500

That's the one! I wouldn't list is as Children's And Anime though. Let's just say there's a shower scene that was a bit spicy for a hormonal teenager.... 

I guess it's got the rarity, but not the audience.

See, this is why nobody takes graded VHS collecting seriously...if these prices were legit we would see amounts like that (or at least close to it) being realized naturally from auctions - except all we see are them being listed at high buy-it-now prices with zero market history to rationalize the price. 

Also, when it comes to vintage versions, I much prefer the Super 8 version of ESB. Not from a quality standpoint (because it's very bad) but rather it being an excellent example of editing down a 2 hour movie into thirty minutes without loosing the major plot points and pacing (which they overall succeeded int, albeit with one glaring cut near the end).

I've good friends, who are investing heavily into this niche - so I feel bad expressing this.  I personally find it ridiculous the prices asked for and sometimes paid for these items and I believe it more a sign of the times with the nostalgic desire to mine our past and create wealth from detritus.  Markets are often about perception and those at the bottom are often greedy and chasing quick bucks without a care for the item in question - will this have longevity? - I think not - but regardless my interest in this niche is beyond less than zero.  p.s. don't get me started on video games and the manipulation there

Just wanted to remind you, when I post these listings, I am in no way an advocate, promoter, or making a positive connotation to these prices. I am merely a collector that has been accumulating sealed VHS tapes for years.

Allot of other folks have in this thread have astutely pointed out all the archival negative implications and dynamics etc. but there is something about rebooting and going back to somewhere you ache to go. These original preserved sealed VHS items are as close as I am going to get. They were a big deal for me personally in the 80s.

That reminds me of my childhood experience with ESB. I grew up in the years after the films had been released, but before the Star Wars resurgence with the Special Editions, prequels, etc. Basically it was a HUGE deal when I discovered the first of the Thrawn trilogy novels for sale at a book store. For years I relied on home-recorded copies of the trilogy, until they rereleased the films for 'the final time' in their original format. 

So, because they'd been recorded off the television showings, and I was still a young kid, I didn't realise that whoever had recorded ESB for me hadn't actually recorded the WHOLE film, and the recording cut out early. For years I thought the film ended with Han in carbonite being taken onto Slave One (I'm still calling it that, damnit) and Boba Fett watching over. I just thought Luke had a robotic hand in ROTJ to show time had passed, like how Leia was disguised as Boussh, etc. 

Boy was I surprised when I learnt there was still a half hour left, and that that's when we learnt about the whole father thing. I just assumed Luke had figured it out on his own, because he's a Jedi now, and they can do stuff like that (kid logic).

I get having that itch to scratch, I get it all the time and in fact have found a solution for VHS. I buy these, which means I not only save money but also save an epic amount of space

I'm currently having made displays for Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, Home Alone, Uncle Buck, Point Break, and Labrynth (They make excellent gifts for friends once I know which movies they are nostalgic for)

Those miniature replicas are fantastic! All the nostalgia, but slimmed down and made digestible for today's world. 

Now to figure out how many actual films you could fit on a device the size of that microVHS.

Jedi is super rare to find in that version. 

Weintraub Terminator is around a 1988 release so not that early but still tough.

getting into this slowly here and there with some horror tape acquisitions but unlike comics vhs movies seem to have so many versions 

so is that terminator a 2nd or 3rd print in comparison to the 1st that sold for 32k on Comicconect ?

still seems pretty cheap in comparison if so
