Slabbed books that have only been owned by you, and the stories behind them. 4 4

This is for books that you own in a slab, that only you have owned.

Did you slab 'em yourself and thereafter keep them? Or did you buy off a dealer who slabbed them for sale, but you are the only private owner?

Not talking about necessarily owning the book from new in a raw state but just in it's slabbed state.

Hopefully there are some interesting stories behind the books.....

This book was raw on MCS a few years back. I know it was owned by a Boardie but I forgot who it was.

Anyways the book was sitting there for some time quite cheap and I couldn't believe it wasn't snapped up. I fell in love with it.

Sure it has the defect of a torn side, but the book is beautiful IMO.

I'll never part with it.

I've thrown a pic in at the bottom of my other HT5 for comparison. Love them both. 

Will post some more on this subject tomorrow, with a couple more books.

Guess it's time for Marty Mann to show his OO books that he has slabbed, but here's one I bought from a dealer who slabbed it...and I de-slabbed it...CGC 6.5...

I have had this so many years now and slabbed it to protect it from me   Still waiting for more copies to appear but i'm thinking a Promise copy has to appear soon

Back down to earth with a less glamourous book...

I bought this raw several years ago as a 1.8

I felt the seller's grading was fair. The book is pretty solid and sound, well attached etc.

The piece missing from the back cover really didn't bother me that much, but it got slammed by CGC when graded. I slabbed it at the same time as the HT5 and have always felt the 0.5 designation was a tad harsh, and the designation as 'incomplete' seemed over the top to me. I've seen books before with chunks missing that did not merit such  a harsh misleading note on the label. 

Still, I'm kind of attached to it.

This book was graded mid-December by the auction house which sold it to me at the beginning of February. So I am the first private owner of this slab.

Likewise this was the second of the pair I won in early Feb. Again slabbed in mid-December for me to become the first private owner.

Interesting this is the 4th highest on the census. I don't usually pay too much attention to census numbers, all the same it's a cool stat.

Lets keep the skull theme going always makes for a great cover. I picked this issue years ago raw and found it was done by Ayers which surprised me.I met Mr Ayers years ago at local cons and was a great guy along with his son.The young reader in me knew he did some great stuff for Marvel and worked many times with King Kirby.This cover was a great fit in the the skull cover collection and coming from him only made it better

Leave it to me to kill off the skull theme.   I spotted this book on Ebay about 3 years ago. The photo of the book looked rather unpromising so I sent a message to the seller asking him if the book was off kilter.

 

Once in hand the book looked better than the 5.0 grade assigned by the seller, with some really clean pages.

 

I sent it in and was slightly surprised with the grade.

At what point did you realize that you didn't have a knack for choosing books ... or dealers?

I've been happy with my purchases from Don Maris and Jim Payette, so maybe I should stick to buying from them.

This one was graded by the seller last November and put up for sale straight away. I bought it in the very early December, so I'm the first private owner.
