This Month in My Magazine Collection, or "How I Got Most of the Warren Mags in a Month"

370 posts in this topic

I really never suspected that the Warren rabbit hole ran this deep.  It seemed liked every week, two or three Warren mags I never knew existed were popping up.  Now, I think I have finally done enough research to compile a definitive and exhaustive list of all American Warren magazine publications.  I'm not counting foreign editions or variants, and I'm not counting the paperback books that Warren also published--just the American Warren magazines.

Does anyone know of anything I missed?

I put all of the Famous Monsters issues in red, because I really don't think I will ever go after them.  There are just too many, and I just don't care for them enough to make it worthwhile.

But I'm open to getting all of the rest, if the price is right.

And then there are the following non-Warren publications, of which I also hope to own all--and then I'm done.  Any other collecting will have to be done with electronic versions.

Some of these limited series are really pretty cool.  They kind of redeemed "Teen Love Stories" with these "On the Scene Presents Freak Out USA" magazines.  I mean, Jefferson Airplane is like my favorite band of all time!  And the Monkees!--on LSD!!  And the Fugs!!!  And Zappa/the Mothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bought this one from the original owner who picked it up in San Francisco after a Love concert in 1967.  Far out...

Support mental health, or buy this magazine...  That's a tough choice!!!

Kind of odd to use the phrase "rabbit hole" in regard to Warren, since a warren is where rabbits live--a warren is literally a rabbit hole.

I don't see the fumetti books on your list, but maybe you had them under some other name.  Horror of party beach, mole people, and curse of Frankenstein are the ones I know of.

Yeah, those are the "Famous Films" #1 - #3.  Horror of Party Beach is #1, Frankenstein/Dracula is #2, and Mole People is #3.

There are two. Not that you are collecting, but for accuracy. The 1974 and the 1975 Con programs.

I don't know if I totally trust the source... it's the same site that mentioned the "yellow bar" variant for the 1964 Flintstones at the World's Fair, which I'm beginning to suspect wasn't really a 1964 variant at all, but just the 1965 printing.  And it seems kind of weird that there would have been a 1961 convention and then not another until 1974.

But I'd rather list magazines that don't exist rather than leave out magazines that do exist.  For now, I'll just consider them "possible, but unconfirmed."

There are three versions of the Flintstone book, there’s a 29c variant that’s the real 1964 alternative, as best I can tell:

https://www.comics.org/issue/320966/cover/4/

Interesting.  I'd seen mention of the 29c price, too, but that source had it as the price for the 1965 printing, and all the 1965 printings I could find were 25c.

Having pics of these three, I think I will go with that for now.  I will amend my list...

P.S.  Looks like the 29c one will be the hard one to find.  Only one listed/sold on da'Bay recently (at least it was only $12, so it doesn't look like it will break the bank if I can just FIND it).

Copied my post from the Warren scarce “Hit List” thread…

Not key or rare but was a comic that I’ve wanted for a while now. Wasn’t a high priority but a copy came up for sale here on the boards and I snagged it. Checking the indicia, I was surprised to see it was a Warren book.

I started the "Down the WARREN Rabbit Hole" gallery tonight...

Recent arrivals include the three Pantha books by Harris--these are about as embarrassing as it gets.  I'm almost afraid to read them, after what Harris did to The Rook.

And, as an additional bonus, look who I got to play poker with today--it's Uncle Creepy himself!

From the deep recesses of the Warren catalog...

1992802428_SpecialEdition-TinyTimF.thumb.jpg.a031ef4878c844c3b81c1bbbe6537dee.jpg

I saw on the cover that a 3 1/2' poster was included, and I got this copy cheap enough that I was hoping that the poster was still attached.

I didn't realize that 16 different pages of the magazine are the poster--you have to basically take the whole magazine apart at the staples, cut the margins off of the 16 pages that comprise the poster, and tape them all together in a 4x4 grid to make the complete poster.  In other words, you basically have to destroy the magazine to assemble the poster.  So there's no way it could NOT be attached, if there's still a magazine to sell!

It probably wasn't the most intelligent way to include a poster in a magazine, but it's all part of the Warren legacy now.

It was kind of a banner day for my Warren Rabbit Hole collection, at least since the days of buying the big Warren runs, with today seeing the biggest bonanza since getting all 29 issues of 1984/1994 at once...

One single seller on da'Bay was offering auctions of the following complete sets, all ending within about half an hour of each other this afternoon:

SPACEMEN: #1-#8 (no 1965 Yearbook) - I won for $171.63 on a $200 max bid.

Screen Thrills Illustrated: #1-#10 - I won for $78 on a $125 max bid.

After Hours: #3-#4 (no #1 or #2) - There was a lot of tape on the cover of #4, and #3 was no particular prize either, so I only bid $70 on the pair and they sold for $102.50.  I'll wait for a full set that presents a little more nicely.

Favorite Westerns of Filmland/Wildest Westerns: #1-#2, #3-#6 - I won for $179.50 on a $200 max bid.

Monster World: #1-#10 - I only put in a $150 max bid, mainly because I already have a #1 that I got somewhere else before, but the most I probably would have bid even if I didn't already have a #1 would have been $200, and they sold for $202.50.  Ce la vie.

So $429.13 + $12.99 shipping + $40.90 tax = $483.02 for 24 books = right at about $20 per book, landed ($20.13 each, to be exact).

The books aren't in GREAT shape, but most of them aren't complete beaters, either, so that's probably a good price for some of the books, and not so good for others.  It's just worth a few extra bucks here and there to not have to put in the work of finding each individual issue for sale, paying $5-$7 each for individual shipping ($12.99 shipping for all 24 = $0.54 each. so I probably saved a good $100 on shipping over buying each issue individually) and then hoping they all make it through the mail room unscathed, etc.  I only have to sweat one big package instead of 24 little ones.

So another big step taken towards completing the Warren collection today, as we are now past the four-month mark as of June 5!  Maybe I can complete my collecting career in six months...

So the booty described above arrived today, and for the first time I'm a little disappointed in a collection I bought...

Described as "Good condition or better," so I wasn't expecting sharp copies, but only #1 and #8 are in fairly decent shape.  #2-#7 all have pretty significant spine splits (at least 1/3 book length), and #6 and #7 have fully split spines with both sides of the covers either completely detached or one side hanging on to one staple by a thread.  So at least those two will probably go on my "Eventual Upgrade" list, but for now, they're just placeholders.  I'd call them more 1.0 than "Good," though.

Given that I paid over $20 for each book, I probably overpaid a bit for this run, although it helps that this collection's share of the total shipping charges was only $4.33 for all 8 books, so I feel like I probably saved about $40 over buying and shipping each book individually, so there's that--but despite some of the good deals I have found, I still think I gave a little back on this run.

Won an auction for the Spacemen 1965 Yearbook for $19.50 + shipping a couple of days later, so that should be arriving soon to complete the run.  The pics for that book weren't great, so I'm kind of expecting it to be pretty low-grade as well.

This was probably the best value of the bunch.  I realize these aren't valuable books or anything, but they're all in what I would call 4.0-5.0 condition, and for less than $8 each + $4.33 shipping for the complete run of 10, I'm ok with it.

Not sure how I feel about this.  Some of the asking prices I've seen for these books have been outrageous, so in that sense, I'm kind of ok with paying $30 per book.  On the other hand, these aren't all high grade copies either, and a couple have some minor spine split issues of their own.  They still probably average around 4.0, with a couple maybe giving a 5.5ish impression.  Not a great deal, I guess, but another hole filled.

I missed out on this collection, but like I said, I already had a #1 anyway, so I wasn't too upset.  I subsequently found #4-#7 and #10 from another seller (along with the Flintstones at the New York World's Fair 1964 25c issue), all around $20 each, and they also arrived today.  These are all pretty good copies; 5.5-7.0 I would say.  Also found individual copies of #2, #3 and #8 for around $20 each as well; they should be arriving soon--just need to nail down a #9 to complete the run!

1795029238_MonsterWorld4F.thumb.jpg.ed8a771032b10d12609b9d020775cc07.jpg

So I'll be adding these to the Down the Warren Rabbit Hole gallery over the next few days, then I'll take a little break before starting my final gallery, "Other Warranted Warrenesque Warrenness" for all the magazines that aren't really Warren, but which wouldn't exist without the Warren mags that went before them (CREEPY the Limited Series, The ROOK, and Pantha from Harris, the CREEPY, EERIE and ROOK runs from Dark Horse, and The CREEPS, SHUDDER, and VAMPIRESS CARMILLA from Warrant, adding to the final two runs at least annually so long as they are ongoing).

COMING SOON TO A GALLERY NEAR YOU!

I was just posting the Screen Thrills Illustrated run, and I noticed this Warren movie being advertised on the back cover of some of those issues.

Does anyone know if this was ever actually released?

Did anyone ever actually see it?

1750352329_ScreenThrillsIllustrated5B.thumb.jpg.d3d1ccb84b32e45457db8c587dd344db.jpglarge.109899417_ScreenThrillsIllustrated7B.jpg.b1b74d372adcdf55666cc1010715ba3f.jpg

It looks something like a 60s version of the 80s movie "Terror in the Aisles"--a compilation of scenes from other horror movies.

CHEESEcake...

Funny how the video said it was taken off the shelves because of rumors of nude pics of Heidi inside.  Like none of the properly upright and pure could allow themselves to actually open the magazine to see for themselves.  :preach:

Of course, if anyone actually stood up and said, "Hey, there's no nude pictures of Heidi in here!" it would be a tacit admission that they DID actually succumb to the temptation of lust and opened the magazine...  :bump:
