"Very small tear left top of front cover"

Do y'all think the Grader Note is referring to that blemish above the RV in MARVEL (which I assumed was a "harmless" printing anomaly rather than a tear)?  hm

I didn't see that mark on any other copies online, so went for a hole/tear as that is certainly what it looks like. It's a gamble when you don't have the book in hand to confirm, and the image isn't of a high enough resolution. I marked it down to a 9.0 as I wouldn't personally give a 9.6 to any book with a cover hole or tear like that - certainly not one that visible.

There are lots of constraints here, so it's not really a fair judgement on anyone's grading abilities. There's a large element of guess work and luck, even. And the dark images and black backgrounds don't work for me, especially when the images are fuzzy when enlarged. That said, if I were to win, or come in the top three, then it would be a very fair indication of abilities and would show that I was indeed an excellent grader.

I guess its a tear not a hole:

I learned that a pin hole is treated as as small tear by CGC. :flamed:

I honestly did not know that. I took far more off my grade than they did.

bet a lot of folks had the FF at 2.5.  Nope def a 3.0.  2.5 is really ragged.

Had it as a 2.0/2.5 but went with the 2.0 due to the huge hole out of the cover.  I changed it back and forth probably 4 times.

I wish that is what killed me. My biggest miss was the Sub . I had it at 9.4.. didn't see the staining and I know how they really love to knock a grade down for that..

Looked like a foxing spot to me so I only dropped it down a tad to a 9.2 but I was thinking 9.0 / 9.2 all day.

Looked like foxing to me as well.  Without some kind of notes on the books you can't know what something is, or isn't, just by the scans.  Just like the last book, the X-Men 283. That hole just looks like a ink blemish/mfg flaw IMO.

Round 2 hosed me a bit.

I didn't do too terrible with 7 points.  My only bullseye was on the X-Men but I didn't notice the pinhole on the corner - oxidation on the staples had me considering a 9.4 but went with my gut.

What would you have gone for if you had, 1Cool?

Probably a 9.4 since it looks production related (similar to the bottom edge tears on the ASM 361).

Yes, I was a touch harsher, with the staples and all. I think I scored six this round - and half of them were on that one book 9_9

To me as well -- I gave it a 9.0 VF/NM.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Book 8 (Sub-Mariner 8) will be the Round 1 & 2 book with the largest difference between the CGC grade (8.0 VF) and the mean contestant grade (as yet unknown).  That distinction is currently held by Book 5 (Secret Wars #8, Dutch Edn), where the difference was ∆ = 0.7 (CGC = 6.5 vs contestant mean = 7.2).  We shall see ......

I agree. Wondering if that submariner number eight is for sale for 8.0 money. The spine on that book was gorgeous

I gave the Subby a 9.4 as well doh! I have graded 7 of the 10 books at 0.5 off...and bombed on 3 books with respective scores of 3, 4 and 5...to add to my other 7 points.  Thus I suck apparently. :tonofbricks:
