This is what's referred to as a cut-out.  In the old days, unsold books and record albums that had been returned to the manufacturer or distributor were marked with either a punched hole or a clipped corner.  These returns were then sold at a steep discount.  The punched hole or clipped corner allowed retailers to immediately recognize the book/record as a discounted return copy, should anyone present it requesting a refund of the original/undiscounted sale price.

The punched hole in this example is at the bottom-left corner:
