Comics are NOT the collectible you thought it was! Sheesh...

Whoever wrote this article is wrong on almost everything listed. If you know where and what has value, lots of value can be had. True, 90% of comics are probably worth less than $10. But there is still enough in the remaining 10% to make it an extremely decent place to invest money into and collect books that will always be desired by fans of the medium. I am sure the same can be said for a lot of the other things in that article...again, what a terrible website with the most minimalistic look at a bunch of hobbies.

Sure but the article is hardly fair and is cherry picking it's examples.  In every area of collecting from coins to oil cans to signs to you name it there's a majority of low value or worthless items and comics are no exception.  Every hobby has it's cream and it's chaff.

"If you have a lot of comics you want to get rid of, you’d do best to sell them as a lot. Even then, you’ll likely only get $20-$30 for the set. There is even an Invaders lot of eight Marvel comic books for just $10. Comics are awesome, but they aren’t a gold mine when it comes to collecting."

After reading this we should all assume any lot of comics will have little value and comic collecting is a dying hobby but we know better.  Next time I go to buy a collection I'll show the owner this article.  Important comics have value and have increased in value overall for many years and the market is pretty dang strong.

Sure, you’re absolutely right, the article is garbage and about a millimetre deep, but I view the intended audience as those who have 8 comics in their house all of which are from 1993 and up.   It’s not meant to be a deep dive and readers like us will understand the nuances.    In fairness she does state some are worth money.    The pictures certainly don’t go well with the article however.

I’d argue its far more than 90%.    There are endless runs of worthless titles by the bigger publishers and there are many, many publishers which don’t have a single book over $10.

I have dealt with who I assume to be the target audience for this article and I think it is a worthwhile read for them. I have people contacting me all the time to sell their collections, and there are a portion of those who figure their books are a goldmine and price the collection as such. A common approach I see is people going onto sites like MCS (which is great, by the way), seeing their books are listed there at $3 each, and figuring the set of 2000 such comics is worth $6 k. If they are nice they say they are willing to give me a great deal at $5k for the group. In reality, books that that go directly into my dollar bins and the 8-ish long boxes of comics are worth about 10% of what the owner thinks they are worth.

The  downside to the article as people pointed out is that it does not get into key issues that are more valuable. So if that group of 2000 has a nice run of Spidey comics that includes ASM 300, and other books like it, the value of the collection goes up quite a bit. I do like that the article mentions they should be sold as a group. I have run into more than a few cases where the person allowed a "really nice private collector" to rummage through and pick out all of the key books, leaving all of the worthless stuff behind. The really screws the seller royally since they are unlikely to ever be able to unload thousands of comics that have been picked over in that way.

Exactly, my collection of packaging peanuts is primarily quite worthless. However, among the endless tripe there are some peanuts that are worth at least two of the others.:)

Dumbassery aside, I agree.

Never thought to collect packaging peanuts but hm .  I bet I have 20 or 30 different types in the basement.

First time I went to Vegas I started collecting the change cups from the different casinos - back when slots kicked out coins.  Many had an image of the hotel or the act starring at the hotel.  Came home with 50 different cups lol, they were light but a bear to fit into my suitcase.
