Animal Man (1988 series) 1 to 26

2023 total = 174

Classic story from Grant Morrison.  Starts with an inventive reimagining of the origin, dips a bit in the middle - environmental and which comes over quite preachy, and then ties up everything that’s gone before nicely with a great application of the ‘World as Simulation’ theory to the comics medium, something which is more mainstream, well-known and relevant now than it was in the early 90s.

Highly recommended.

I remember when this first came out, I wasn't interested in the character, so didn't pick it up, but by the time it was reaching the end of the run, people were speaking highly of it, so I went back and tried it, and yeah, amazing stuff.

Several years ago, I decided to stop reading print comics and graphic novels and went digital with the Marvel and DC Apps.  It was a lot cheaper and the books looked very nice on my tablet.  While I enjoy the Apps, I miss the holding of a book and seeing a true printed page.  I just ordered a bunch of Marvel and DC Omnibus books and am looking forward to reading them. I dont know if I will read 500 individual comics in the omnibus' this year, but I am going to have a great time reading as much as time allows!  Happy New Year everyone!

i did similar and opted to put Marvel Unlimited on my iPad.  On the one hand I enjoy the exaggerated colors and perfect detail and not having to worry about damaging something old, but on the other hand I find a need to pull out paper copies on occasion when I'm reading something I actually have in my collection.  I must say I really enjoy being able to read a series starting at number 1, and it's interesting to realize which stories I still enjoy and which ones I thought I would enjoy, but really don't.  An example for me was the Silver Surfer series.  One of my favorite characters, but the series left me wanting to see less Silver Surfer not more.

146 comics so far this year

TMNT: The Last Ronin. I read this last year, but read it again this year. My 9 year old daughter saw the Last Ronin figure in my office, started to ask questions about the figure, then asked to read the TPB. Such a proud moment as a dad. Great story, even the second time around.

Chu Vol 1 and 2. Very entertaining story from the writer/creator of Chew.

Godland 1 to 37

2023 total = 234

Much prefer Joe Casey’s work with the brilliant Jose Ladronn on Cable to this.

Starts out interesting, but then the constant attempts at very extreme, Kirby-style overblown, spaced-out dialogue eventually get very wearing and a chore to wade through.

The art’s a good homage to Kirby, but the figure work and faces often seem a bit amateurish to me. Prefer Ladronn’s Kirby-inspired art.

Update for June, previous total of 317.

House of Slaughter 11-15

Liked this one a whole lot more than the previous arc.

Marvel Team-Up 137-150
Amazing Spider-Man 249-270, Annual 18
Spectacular Spider-Man 86-110, Annual 4
Web of Spider-Man 1-9

Continuing with my run of Spidey titles, finishing off MTU and continuing along with it's replacement in the lineup, Web of Spider-Man. Some memorable issues along the way - Assistant Editor's Month! Debut of the Black Costume! The End of the Black Costume (sorta)! Mary Jane's big reveal! Secret Wars II crossover! The Death of Jean DeWolfe!

Slowly approaching the end point of my Spider-Man reading, don't know what will follow - perhaps pick up some of the DC titles where I left off with the 70s? Or where I trailed off in the 90s? Hey, who knows? As they used to say, Stay Tuned!

New total for the year - looks like 389. Well below where I wanted to be at this point. :frown:

191 comics so far this year.

I finally finished reading the Bone series. This is a book that people love. Having seen Bone cards and comics way back in Wizard magazine, it never caught my interest. Jeff was doing a book tour a couple of hours from me, so I picked up a few Bone TPBs off my shelf that I held on to from a bulk purchase, gave them a quick read, and I really enjoyed the story. So I picked up the omnibus from him at his event and got it autographed. It wasn't laugh out loud funny like I remember from the Tick. Wasn't fully cartoony. Wasn't fully human. It was some odd mix that worked somehow. Overall, I'd give it a 4.5/5. There are some heavy dream sequences, which I detest as a literary device.

I read a few other random comics that were piling up.

X-Factor: The Quick and the Dead was a random one-shot filler story. Nothing special.

Man-Shark Mas is a Kickstarter from a creator I've supported before. The style reminds me of the Tick in many ways. It was a fun read. I'll pick up the trade possibly to continue reading the series.

What If Boba Fett Fought Predator is from a local creator. A unique What If story. It was a fun read.

Up Next: Finishing up Tales from the Rancor Pit with my son, then Conan by Jim Zub, then God of War.

Read in this order, basically saving the best for last…

Legion of Super-Heroes 1984 series 1 to 12

After a certain classic storyline, the material here is okay, fairly readable but nothing special

Legion of Super-Heroes 272 to 283

Very patchy, with Conway and Thomas phoning in some very average stories at best. Some of it’s okay, such as the origins of Blok and Wildfire, and it’s always interesting to see a story with the Legion visiting Superboy in the past, but there’s a fair amount of tedious rubbish as well. Grimbor the Chainsman, who surrounds the Earth with energy chains and holds the planet to ransom… nope.

Legion of Super-Heroes 284 to 296, Legion Annual 1

Now then, this is more like it.  Absolutely classic Copper Age storyline, peak storytelling by Levitz and Giffen. Well paced, keeps you engaged throughout, and reads with the same big scale, overblown grandiosity that you see a few years later in Crisis on Infinite Earths.  The Annual is excellent.

2023 total = 272
