Fantastic Four #164 CGC 8.0?
2 2

19 posts in this topic

Just got this from a seller on ebay. Obvious misgrade here due to a penned arrival date("8/26" Mike's Amazing World has the Newsstand date as August 26, 1975) on the back cover.

Grader's notes:

crease right bottom of front cover(VERY faint, non-color breaking)
writing right top of back cover
light spine stress lines to cover

This seems like a pretty unobtrusive location for an arrival date...so if I send it back in, what grade do you think it would get?

noted the date

this is true. Not all defects are noted, not all notes are defects. We can debate whether this is good policy, but it is what they do. This was graded  month ago. I would not expect an outcome beyond a grade higher/lower depending on the specific person handling the book

I think a better question here is, can the noted defects be pressed out? I would say the grade is harsh if these are the only defects; depending on the quantity of the "spine stresses" and/or creases I suppose.

What’s the problem with the arrival date?

Arrival date, initials, small scibbles - there's no effect on the grade to the best of my knowledge. I have a Richie Rich Bank Book #1 with initial scribbled on cover and it still received a CGC 9.4960783122_RRBankBooks1CGC9.4.thumb.jpg.cc7f7716fa0eecb490efefde4e60578f.jpg

Still, as a collector I would MUCH rather have a neat arrival date in pen than a scribble by some snot-nosed kid.

So you're saying CGC doesn't mitigate a pen mark if it's a part of the distribution/sale process? And a meaningless scribble is not treated like more of a defect?  That makes zero sense to me.

You paid $70 for a CGC 8.0 and a CGC 9.0 sells for about $90 - $95. How big a bump are you hoping for? Seems to me the cost to re-grade it isn't worth it in this instance... (shrug)

This is for my personal collection so $$$ is not really the top priority for me. I bought it because it has white pages and dates don't bother me a bit.

But since you brought it up, when I was considering my purchase, I was comparing this with an 8.5 with white pages on MCS. Which copy looks better...

I think it's no contest...

I don't look at the grades as much as the books themselves...I'll take a 6.0 that looks amazing over a dirty 9.0 any day and twice on Tuesday.

Again, the graders are not reliable.  It can be a bad day for them.

I like the 8.5 better as I don't like the wrap of the 8.0 but it's close.

Your 8.0 has rounded corners and wear along the bottom near both corners.  It looks fairly graded to me.  If the graders counted the writing in the right back top corner as a defect perhaps you could resub and get a 8.5.  I don't see the logic in resubbing this copy as it will never ever be a high grade copy and the cost is prohibitive for what you'll ultimately get.

Here's a 9.4 about to end on ebay.  I understand we all collect differently but it's much nicer copy than yours will ever be and it has white pages.

To each their own, that copy has some nasty printer creases that would bug the heck out of me. And some spine breaks that are too noticeable to ignore. I'd rather have my 8.0(especially for a fraction of the price). And I don't mind miswraps as long as they don't make the book look wonky. As far as the 8.5 being better, we can just agree to disagree I guess...
