Lets not discuss the defects on the books please.

Can someone explain the front cover of Popular for me? I had it at 3.5 and still don’t know what that defect is?  Also all that colour transfer”!!?

Also curious about the Thing.  Thought the missing piece would have more of an impact.

trying to learn….

Anyone who is still not convinced that CGC has significantly relaxed its grading standards over the years should check out this sequence:

  • CGC 2.5 = S/N 0754678008 graded on 08-14-2006
  • CGC 3.0 = S/N 0971037001 graded on 02-25-2009
  • CGC 3.5 = S/N 3728343017 graded on 12-22-2020
  • CGC 4.5 = Popular Comics #66 just graded 2023

Your grade is sincere but CGC is softened up on GA books in last two years.  That's what zzutak said.

Interesting! The Shadow going 2.5 to 3.5 is a pretty compelling case. The Popular at 4.5 is kind of apples-to-oranges though -- IMO it actually is a nicer book.

Kind of laid an egg on the round, but here are my grader notes. IMO 'The Thing' is way overgraded compared to examples I saw checking how my guess stacked up to comps. I can rationalize the rest of the deviations between my guesses & the slabs. The list of defects have a line, which is the tipping point for assigning the grade. The column of ranges comes from the CGC book.

Not too shabby! Popular Comics was the hardest for me but maybe should have spent more time on The Thing--felt high to me though...oh well!

Newbster :makepoint:  (It's called a joke.)  Nice grading/score!

I've said it before -- your notes rock!

Since you're putting in this much time -- I kinda think you go astray when you compare to other slabs (not that I've never done it, lol). Just soooo many factors go into a book's grading, not all of them visible in scans. And eye appeal varies widely, especially when you get south of (say) 5.5.

So it's 1 point for every incremental grade? I had IH 5 @ 1.8 so that's 1 point correct?

Correct
