CGC oops......

For reference:  CGC Label certification # 4318799009.  Note:  NOT my book.  I seen this book at a comic con show room floor.  I find it difficult to believe that "THREE" graders looked at this book and gave it a 9.8.  Can anyone examine the images on the label certification page and justify the grade?  No one I have spoken with that has seen this book in person will give this book higher than a 5.0 tops (and that's being generous).  Note that there is a crease in the top left edge of the back cover that would break color if it was not on white.  Very dirty back cover with stains.  multiple edge tears along top of back cover.  Edge wear and staining along the front cover.  And those are just the defects you can see in the scans. this book looks way worse when you hold it in your hands.  Please share your thoughts.  I appreciate your feedback.  Thanks

I don't believe any grader at CGC would give that a 9.8 or even close.  Probably an error when inputting data for the label if I had to guess.

I hope they can learn from this mistake.  Consistency is important.  If they have 3 graders inspect each book, perhaps a suggestion that they have multiple individuals inspect quality control of every book after each book is encased?

Definitely a big swing and miss at CGC. Maybe there were 2 copies in the same submission, a 9.8 and this one, that got swapped at encapsulation. Wouldn't be the first time.

I was checking the other comics in the submission by changing the last digits to 001, 002, etc., but got kicked out for too many searches (?).  First time that happened.

Looks like 4318799013 is the last in the series of submissions.  I couldn't find another copy.  My first instinct was that this was a joke, or forgery, but the certification number is valid, and the scans are legitimate.  This one is definitely an outlier!  If this seller has any honesty, they should ask CGC to regrade it free of charge.  It's not like there is a 0.2 difference in grade between what is labeled and what condition the book is actually in.  This is a significant difference in quality between this book and a 9.8.

Passing this off as a 9.8 just because it says 9.8 is not cool.  This can lead people to believe that this seller is not very honest.

The person that owns this book probably wouldn't bother wanting to spend money on S&H to get a 5.0-5.5 book back from CGC that would never sell. Best bet is to crack it out of it's case. It could serve a long and purposeful life time as a bathroom reader or something to that effect IMO.

If CGC agreed to regrade this comic due to the obvious error, they would also cover shipping back and forth.  They don't want that thing out in the wild, with that grade and their name on it.

The problem is that this was at a show, doesn't belong to the OP.  No way to get word to the owner.  It's unsalable as is, I would think.

SOP for nearly all comic dealers.

Sometimes a grader will make an error when entering a grade and no one else will catch it. It looks like that may be what happened here, because it's obviously not even close to a 9.8...

I would think it would be obvious to the submitter or seller of the book, too.

It would have to be more than a single digit typo, right?  There's only 1.8 or 9.2, 9.4, 9.6, 9.9 that would fit with a single digit mistake.  Maybe that book is a 1.8.  A double digit typo should be a warning notice to that employee.

I have to believe that it was a swapped label from someone else's submission.  OR the graders had too many drinks that day.

I could see a buyer wanting to own this for the novelty of it, in fact depending on how much it is I would buy it to preserve the mistake since the search of the certification can prove it. Reminds me of the time my Father received a check from a utilities company for 0.01 cent, instead of taking it to the bank to deposit the "windfall" he got it framed.

As long as the owner isn't trying to represent a 9.8 book to the buyer I see no harm other than to corporate credibility.

Most probably , but my guess is the seller/dealer will state "CGC says its a 9.8, so it's a 9.8", not to mention the obligatory "It's a newsstand baby". Then after unloading it, brag about how much dough was made off the sucker!
