Parts of the run haven't aged that great, but for the most part I can read 90% of it happily today, a pretty good percentage considering the vintage, creators, and competition.

Might it be time to try an issue or two again and see if your views have changed over time? You never know...

Looks like I quit in the neighborhood of issue 364. I can't remember exactly what drove me away, given the over 30 years since, but I can't imagine the Lyja/Alicia thing really helped.

As for trying it, as I said I did eventually buy them, but given the (well over) 10,000 unread comics I've got around here, it seems unlikely I'd pick up something I disliked enough to actually break up a run like that.

And, hey, I readily admit that I might be in a minority - guy has a lot of books in his bibliography, so somebody must like his writing. No shortage of people with bad taste, amirite? :baiting:

I'm a little surprised, I usually really loved the stuff from Hudnall back in the day. Although I will admit the story sounds like him....

You know, I was actually optimistic going into his run, as I also had similar good feelings towards his writing, but man, it's pretty rough going.

No, and that's fair, I freely admit my taste may not be to your liking, or that of a lot of people there.

The issues you read are absolutely the drek of the run. It does improve after that, having some genuinely solid moments after they kill Reed and let Susan shine as leader of the team. That's the best material of the run until finally the last 2 issues are by a different team and part of the Onslaught crossover, ending that volume of Fantastic Four (for the first time anyway.)

If you're after some hassle free DeFalco, check out his Comic Creators On... series. There's 3, X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four, and they're solely interviews by DeFalco with the legendary creators behind the respective titles. Well worth it, if you weren't already aware of them.

Just finished Green Lantern by Johns Omnibus vol 3 which includes:

Green Lantern #53-60
Green Lantern (2011) #1-20
Green Lantern Annual #1
Green Lantern Corps #58-60
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8-10

I liked it, a lot of the material was new to me but I remembered the ending pretty clearly.

Total: 392

I’ll continue with Claremont’s X-men run but might also start Morrison’s Doom Patrol again and maybe something Batman related.

Transformers IDW Collection Phase 2 Vol 12

Transformers IDW Collection Phase 3 Vol 1

Transformers IDW Collection Phase 3 Vol 2

Transformers IDW Collection Phase 3 Vol 3

What If Aliens 1,2

Aliens Black, White and Blood 1-3

Transformers (Skybound) 6,7

Phew, at long last I finished my revisit of IDW Transformers Phase 2, and have finished off the remaining hardcover collections of Phase 3. That means I'm now moving into the various trade paperbacks, since IDW lost their license before they could collect every single thing in OHC. Really a bummer. I'm feeling like a genius for seeing the writing on the wall and picking up the trades when I did, because some of them are selling for STUPID money these days, and I can only imagine they'll get worse, as it'll be some time before Skybound or anyone else will get around to printing that late material.

Still loved Phase 2 just as much as the first time I read it. Phase 3 is rough going at first, as it kicks off with their Revolution crossover event. I have no interest in GI Joe, MASK, Action Man, ROM etc being integrated into the Transformers universe. I just like the Transformers, and that brand extension weakens the property overall. So that stuff blows. Lost Light does the heavy lifting, as it's a wonderful continuation of the characters and stories of More Then Meets the Eye. Really love that stuff. The Optimus Prime ongoing becomes the story of Transformers on Earth, which, again, isn't something I care about ,but I do like the art. So, just a few trades away now from finishing up that entire IDW era.

I have not been a fan of the Aliens books that Marvel have been doing, but Black White and Blood is definitely the best thing they've put out so far. An anthology series, it has the vibe of the Dark Horse stories. I dig it. What If Aliens is goofy, but interesting.

So, all told this brings me to 146 on the year. I'm not gonna make it!

Captain Marvel (2012 series) 1 to 17

Avengers The Enemy Within one-shot

Avengers Assemble (2012) 16 to 19

Avenging Spider-Man 9 and 10

Basically, the Kelly Sue DeConnick run.

Okay stories, nothing particularly exceptional. The first time travel story is quite good, issue 17 as well, the one which also provides inspiration for Kamala Khan to finally become the new Ms Marvel, and Danvers’ power-related health issues and limitations are interesting. The problem was that a lot of the art really wasn’t to my taste, with an emphasis on the modern, distorted figurework which would appeal more to the Humberto Ramos fans.  Not quite that extreme, but heading that way.  I much preferred the old school styles of Pat Olliffe and Terry Dodson for the short runs they worked on.  One of the stories appeared during the Infinity crossover, leading up towards Hickman’s Secret Wars, and was basically the same series of events told from two character perspectives - tolerable as an interval in a long event saga, a bit tedious in isolation in a trade paperback.

Captain Marvel (2019 series) 1 to 11

The start of Kelly Thompson’s run. Preferred the stories and dialogue here, and the art was by one of my favourite modern creators, Carmen Carnero, who I started following after some excellent work on the recent Captain America : Sentinel of Liberty series.

Easier and shorter to describe a less choppy and more consistent run.

141 comics so far this year.

This was for my (comic) book club. Not really cup of tea. Not gross or anything, just not a topic that I find interesting. Graphic novel about a sideshow performer.

Dawn of X Vol 11 - I liked the Hellions story quite a bit.

Some local creator books.

Metal Society 1-5

Metal Society is about the first boxing match between a human and a robot. What really makes this one standout is the world building. We get an overview of both protagonists whole lives without it feeling convoluted. Rosa is the human champion and WOL-421313 fights for robots. The story could have been decent with all robots being one dimensional villains, but the sympathetic character of WOL adds a lot to it. It also allows us to see how the robots treat each other. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good sci-fi story.

archiesabrina.jpeg.ba42e67127ccac20d2d89087dd99505e.jpeg

Archie 700-713

The first two volumes focus on Archie and Sabrina dating and a potential murder mystery. It's mostly lighthearted and the characters are likable. Archie and Sabrina work well as a couple. They initially want to keep the relationship a secret, which of course leads to comedic shenanigans. The murder mystery and weird things going in the woods gives it variety and suspense. It was a strong start.

The only thing continued in the third volume is Sabrina and Archie dating. Every other plot thread is dropped to spotlight Katy Keene. Now the world seemingly revolves around her. It could work if the writing made Katy an appealing character. And if they didn't suddenly portray Archie in a negative light. The whole story is messy and, frankly, an example of how not to introduce (or reintroduce) a character.
