2024 Grading Contest Summer Edition Season 3 (#11) Round 4

I did pretty well on this one (for me). A bulls-eye on the War Victory, then only 1 point off on the next 3 books. Got killed on the Crossfire. It looked a lot better to me than the grade it got, so there go 4 points. Total this round, 7 points. I seem to be really terrible at grading moderns.

War Victory #1 - 5.0

Tim Holt #17 - 2.5

Spidey #73 - 9.6

X-Men #97 - 9.2

Crossfire #12 - 8.5

Dang, I would have had a perfect round, but I pushed the Spidey to far.  Everything seems to go higher then I have been graded and my original guess was 9.4 and I pushed it to a 9.6.  UGHHH!

Hey all

Still waiting for the final results.   They will be posted as soon as I have them.  Thanks to everyone for participating.   :)

Thank you for running the contest Mike. I always enjoy trying to test my grading skills and learning about the process.

Great contest Mike...Thanks...I screwed the pooch this round...War Victory killed me, 3.0...I can't grasp stains on early books..esp when all I hear is "CGC is tough on stains..." (shrug)

CGC makes a distinction between stains and foxing, one that very few collectors seem to make. As you rightly point out even faint stains can absolutely hammer a book's CGC grade, whereas even fairly ugly foxing seems to get 'pretend you don't see it' treatment in grading. It's mystifying and has been a topic of conversation in these contests for as long as I can remember.

(As shown in this file footage, if a new CGC grader accidentally notices foxing they are quickly and firmly steered back on track.)

Shocking that I got the Tim Holt correct, I really need to only participate in the low grade rounds;)

I guessed up on the Crossfire because I just didn't see the crease or scuffing and lost 3 points on that one and I had 5.5 as my guess on the War Victory (in my heart I really wanted to say 4.5), so 5 points total. My first 2 rounds were miserable, so I'll take the last round and this one.

Thank you, Mike! I know how hard you work on this.

I was so disappointed that my Strange Tales #110 got 2.0 instead 2.5/3.0.  Just some stains and moderate creases that broke color.  The spine is fine with some stress marks.   However this Tim Holt has moderate damages on the spine. I understand that CGC has soft on GA books instead SA books.

4 points for me this round, for a total of 20 for the contest overall. That's always my target - just one point off on average. Not too shabby :)

20 is my goal also...18 last one 19 this one...I did really blow it on the last one though...oh well..all great fun.
