Don't see these auctioned off very often. Wonder if the seller will actually allow this one to play out. hm

Hah, and a mere 13 years ago people were scoffing at this selling for $500!

$500 13 years ago probably equals $1500 today? Wild guess of course.

Exactly. I think some people here just like to hate on modern books. I collect books of all ages BTW.

Going on 13 years and the book has sustained and has gone beyond the $500 mark.

Only for health care. Otherwise, based on CPI, $500 in 2003 is around $656 today so this has actually appreciated quite a bit.

:makepoint: Inflation rate was never stated. I merely wrote down rate of return required to gain equivalent $$.

If you want to know inflation equivalent (2003) $500 in 2016, that number is $656.05

No. About $660 in today's dollars according to an inflation calculator.

If you believe the official rate of inflation has been misstated and it is actually higher, let's say $800.

Surprised gas was only $1.60 a gallon in 2003. I would have figured it had ballooned by then, but it was just starting to creep up.

It will probably close at around $4500.

What's that % mark-up over $500 from 14 years ago? lol

-J.

4,500/500 = 9 (900% markup) and thats why someone thought it was 9% APR. But that's not correct. Inflation rate has been closer to 2% each year between 2003 and 2016: http://www.in2013dollars.com/2003-dollars-in-2016?amount=500

2003 - $500

2004 - $500 + 2% inflation = $510

2005 - $525 + 2% inflation = $520.2

2006 - $520.2 + 2% inflation = $530.6

2007 - $630.6 + 2% inflation = $541.22

2008 - $541.22 + 2% inflation = $552.04

2009 - $552.04 + 2% inflation = $563.08

2010 - $563.05 + 2% inflation = $574.34

2011 - $574.34 + 2% inflation = $585.83

2012 - $585.83 + 2% inflation = $597.55

2013 - $597.55 + 2% inflation = $609.49

2014 - $609.49 + 2% inflation = $621.68

2015 - $621.68 + 2% inflation = $634.12

2016 - $634.12 + 2% inflation = $646.80

It's a little under the $660 amount because I rounded down to 2% even (not 2.02% and this is an average, in actuality it varied more). But you get the idea and depending on your source the inflation rate may vary a little.

I think it will close just under $4K because of the copies that lasted for months on ebay, and those copies were kinda-sorta recently (6 months ago or less?). But time will tell for sure. (shrug)

So you meant ROI

ROI typically means Return On Investment:

2003 - Bought Bats 608 9.8 for $500

2016 - Sell for $4,000

ROI - $4,000 - $500 = $3,500, which gives us 900% ROI

If you wanted to know what the ROI is accounting for inflation, then you'd get $4,542. But that muddies the water a bit, not necessarily useful in our industry since we always look at todays value for our books.

That's my prediction on the hammer, give or take.

Lots of demand for this book, especially in a 9.8. Six months is an eternity when a book heats up, and it was already trending up before that..

Last 9.8 copy was at over $3500 before the seller ended the auction early (stupidly).

Only a couple 9.8's offered a year. Who knows when the next will be.

It is easily and hands down the most desired modern age Batman variant. Competition for it will be intense.

Isn't that 700%?

Considering you get the original $500 back on the sale, the return is 800%. The net profit is 700%.

I don't see any numbers that would be 900%.

Investing $500 for 14 years and returning $4000 is an annual return of 15% (compounded).

Bernie Madoff couldn't beat those returns!

(I think it's more like 13 years as the "oh my gosh it's $500" was in 2003, but maybe it was already in 2002, I dunno)
