This is the wrong forum for this.  Re-post in the newbie forum:

https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/93-newbie-comic-collecting-questions/

Also, people like nice pictures and specifics of what you have, condition, and if there are any big keys like Amazing Fantasy 15, that one is popular and you will get much assistance.

Hi West,

welcome to the CGC forum.

If possible post pics of some books, and do not be surprised if the books are no where near 9.9 or 10.0 as that is extremely rare even for brand new just purchased and never read comics.

But they are in the original bags they came in.  Why won't they get 10.0 or better?

i'll play along

the "original" bags they came in degrade over very little time and that degradation leaves an oily residue on the books that can only be removed completely with a chemical cleaning that ultimately leads to a restored CGC label.

I will help as best I can.

It sounds like a cool collection, and you can definitely post pictures of them right here in this thread once you have taken some. In terms of grade, as several people have pointed out having books in bags and boards does not guarantee much aside from avoiding the more extreme wear you see when comics are stored without them. Having said this, even at 8s the books from the 60s and 70 or earlier can really add up in value in a hurry if you have the good ones.

Best of luck with the collection! Sounds like you were given a great one.

A collection of 1200 books ranging 80 years... even if the OP is not telling porkies 1000 of them are likely to be from the 80's+ with anything older being 70's archie, and everything else dell, gold key, or classics illustrated.

The "one owner never read" is the equivalent of "ran when parked" or "just needs battery".

I don't think we will every see pictures of this gem mint collection, but who knows maybe this is the goldmine find of a very picky collector who only bough #1 issues of only the now Key books from every decade. I would also look for a sports almanac in the area.

There is a sub forum called “hey buddy can you spare a grade” where people post pictures and ask for grading opinions from other board members.

Wow! And welcome to the forum  What an exciting gift to receive! In terms of the help you have requested from forum members, if you could break the collection down initially into how many books from each decade the collection comprises, that would be the first useful data point. There are separate forum areas for the various ages that comic collecting focusses on.

There's a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm here which will cover all aspects of the kind of advice I expect you are hoping for. Posting a small sample of some of the best looking books from each of the decades the collection covers (in the Buddy, Can You Spare a Grade section,) will help determine whether you have a gold mine on your hands or whether it's just a great starter collection.

As for poly bagged books, depending on how they have been stored, you are likely to have a book length indent on the back of the book from the bag. Without pressing, those books won't garner the high grades you aspire to. Whether those books are even worth that kind of attention/cost, forum members can help you to determine.

I think the most interest will be centred on books in the range 1940s to 1980s. There are plenty of collectors here who also love Copper Age and Moderns too, so hopefully, something for everyone and you should get some great info and advice on your new collection!

Looking forward to seeing some of your books at your earliest opportunity!
