Grading shenanigans at CGC?

The graphs recently shown don't back this up.  I think it would be correct to say the odds would have been 1 in 100 a year or two ago but for some reason it's becoming much more common.  I doubt the quality of submitted books have gotten that much better (at least to the degree seen in the graphs) so it has to be a loosening of standards for those grades.  I don't have a dog in the fight since I don't even chase 9.8s let along higher grades but the data coming in has to be concerning for those that do.

That's exactly my point though. I'm not questioning whether or not there are more 9.9s and 10.0s being graded these days, but who's actually receiving these grades. Most of the people I talk to haven't seen an uptick in their books being graded as 9.9s. I get the sense this trend will continue while 9.9s are selling for 10 to 20 times their 9.8 counterparts, and the only time we'll see this trickle down to the rest of us is when the 9.9 values have gone down considerably.

Okay did a little digging into before and after 449101900X submission. CGC really seems to be locking down the limit of looking up other submissions, so I could only look up a handful, but they are telling. No proof these may or may not be related, but the consistency of quality makes me think they're probably from the same submitter. Here's a selection:

Someone who did a Mark Hamill CGC signing (multiples): https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4491003001/ (16 off)

X-Men #1 5.0 Restored: https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4491011001/ (8 off)

Batman 18 5.0 from the Christine Farrell Collection: https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4491012001/ (003 also from the same collection) (7 off)

Sports Mirror #3 (first Michael Jordan Magazine Cover): https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4491021001/ (2 off)

So it seems like someone who does a lot of submissions for people. Now here's a question for people. Has anyone recently submitted around mid September and can compare their submission number to when these were graded? It should tell us when they were submitted to probably give us the tier.

This is off-topic, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. Sports Mirror #3 is the first Michael Jordan cover in Sports Mirror

It's nowhere near the first Michael Jordan magazine cover.

I haven’t checked. Is CGC actually limiting the number is certs you can look up now?

I have been on this message board for 22 years, and this thread could have been posted literally at any time over those last 22 years. This is just amusing.

I haven't made it through the whole thread and don't intend to but lemme guess... everyone is conspiracy theorizing as to why Dazzler 1 and Secret Wars 8 have multiple 9.9's in one submission and the world as we know it is ending. Christ people, it's Dazzler 1 and Secret Wars 8... the only surprising thing is there aren't already 500-600 of each in 9.9. And the only reason for that is because CGC was artificially holding back those grades, which apparently they are no longer doing.

I think some of the more modern books have thicker cover stock. The few that come across my desk don’t look like they need any work, but the customer wants them pressed regardless. Most f the 9.9’s and 10’s I get reported back to me come from books like these.

This may also account for the uptick in 9.9-10 grades

Personally, the oldest books I have gotten 9.9’s back on are infinity gauntlet 5 and 6, Hulk 400 and ASM 316.

Good info.  Was the change in paper stock last year?  That would definetely explain a lot especially since just released books make up a lot of the books being graded.

Honestly, I don't think this is anything shady, just unheard of at this point in time.

I think this is an example of what the future holds for CGC graded books.

This submission was probably just full of cracked out 9.8s.

I don't think it's that hard to pick out flawless 9.8s that were graded years ago ...crack and resubmit for potential 9.9s

This is really simple.

CGC has changed and 9.9s are now attainable.

But to have a good shot at them you'll have to crack out some 9.8s.
