Ahhhh, the G.I. Combat logo.

It would have been designed at Quality, so who knows. Since Reed Crandall did many of the early covers, a case could certainly be made that he also created the masthead. He was a trained artist, and would very likely have had a background in rendering display type. But we'll probably never know.

Considering that the logo ran from 1952 until 1986, it's one of the longest-running unchanged (or seriously unchanged) logos in comics, and it may be the longest unchanged logo of a genre book... 34 years!

Quite a feat.

Maybe Mark Evanier or Tom Orzechowski knows -- I'll ask (eventually).

Ira Schnapp??? Is that a real name?

No, I don't know who designed it.

Ira Schnapp designed some logos for DC -- minor ones like Action Comics, Superman (after Shuster), Adventure Comics, Justice League of America, Green Lantern...

Jack

(shrug) I don't keep up with who created what logos.

Thanks for the link. That's exactly where I learned about Schnapp. Letterers aren't exactly the most celebrated members of the creative team.
