hey, I just looked through some of my mags and noticed a cover reprint from one that you listed

Just found a great source of reprint credits.

Just got a copy of New England Comics' Buried Terror#1 (sort of a continuation of Tales Too Terrible to Tell).

It features an issue-by-issue index of Ajax and it actually lists Eerie Publlications reprint credits. Unfortunately they only covered Fantastic Fears, Haunted Thrills, and Fantastic. They were supposed to cover Voodoo and Strange Fantasy in #2 but I don't think they ever published that one (I will be looking).

 

Most of the credits I could check appear to check out, but a few didn't.

For some, I didn't have the Eerie Pubs issue to double check, so I don't know if Eerie changed the title when they printed it or not (sometimes they did, but it seems that they usally didn't with the Ajax stuff). I have indicated these with a "[?]".

There were also a few where Buried Terror didn't list a story as being reprinted by Eerie Pubs but I found an Eerie Pubs story with the same title and page count that looked to be a reprint. Some of these I was able to verify since they provided other info (i.e. "Hitler story"). The rest I indicate with "possibly reprinted from..."

 

First, here are the problem cases I found:

*BT lists The Devil Collects as being from Haunted Thrills #15. I have it as a rework of The Man Who Tricked the Devil from Tales of Horror (Toby) #7 and I think I have both issues so maybe Ajax actually reworked it first.

 

*They have Three In a Grave (Haunted Thrills #8) as being reprinted in Terror Tales v1n10. I have that issue but it doesn't have a story by that name. Maye it was changed to Dig Me a Grave??.

 

*The Genius (Witches Tales v1n8) could be from Haunted Thrills #9 but page counts don't match (former was 5 pages, Ajax was 6 pages - given the common title, it is probably a different story)

 

* BT lists both Death at the Throttle (Haunted Thrills #11) and Wheel of Terror (Haunted Thrills #14) as being reprinted in Terror Tales #v1n9, but it has no story with that title. One of them may be Phantom Express (all 3 are 6-pagers) - I suspect the former. It may also be that they got the Eerie #1 (they actually list the vol 1 issues without the vol #)

 

*I'm not sure if the stories they list as oringally being in Horrific #1 (Comic Media) actually were. I.E. they verified that Crack-Up was indeed an Ajax reprint, but said it was originally in Horrific #1. From the description of a story in Horrific #4 that appeared in TTTTT, I thought it was from there.

To all Eerie Pub. fans!

Just picked up this book from my LCS and it is great!

Published by Idea Men Productions with almost 200 pages worth of the best Eerie Pub. stories with all the blood 'n guts 'n popping eyeballs. A great forward on the beginnings of the EP books with Myron Fass. Also an interesting afterword describing the formation of the Comics Code and reprints the code and all the strict guidlines the publishers and advertisers had to comply with.

I have also been slowly working on indexing the Eerie Pubs issues I have. I have added almost all of them to the Grand Comics Database.

I am still adding new information to my old indices and correcting mistakes (i.e. I didn't originally know that Ezra Jackson was a pen name for Myron Fass - actually, I'm still not 100% sure on it but that's how I'm indexing them now).

 

I have yet to systematically go thru by Eerie pubs and pre-code stuff to find the reprints/remakes, but here is most of what I've found so far. I only list the first time Eerie reprinted it (that I know of).

 

Unless other wise noted (with RP for reprints, and RM for remakes), all Ajax stories are reprints and all others are remakes (that is, the same basic -script but with completely new art). I think the only non-Ajax reprint (as opposed to remake) I've found is The One That Got Away. I also left off the times when Eerie remade their own stories/reprints:

Ezra Jackson was not a pseudonym for Myron Fass. Ezra Jackson was an Iger shop artist who kept busy inking through the years and was called on by Carl Burgos for art director duties for the Eerie Pub line.

 

I'm not sure how this one started (i.e. Fass as Jackson) but it's taken on a life of it's own.

Thanks. I knew that there was a real comic artist named Ezra Jackson, as do several of the sources that claim Myron Fass used that pen name.

 

Don't know where it started (assuming it's false) but almost all the web sources repeat it (including Wikipedia). I'm guessing they got it from The Claw's website, where it looks like someone who worked there said it (amid some other info that seems questionable to me). Even the book mentioned above seems to rely almost exclusively on The Claw's skimpy (and out-of-date) website as well as the one article on Myron Fass that eveyone seems to quote.

 

I actually got the book hoping it would have new background info (I figured they must have talked to somebody who'd worked there when they obtained the rights to print the stories) but it had none.

 

If I can definitively confirm that the real Ezra Jackson was the art editor (as well as the artist for most, if not all, of the text stories), I'll try to correct the GCD entries. BTW - I didn't list the reprint credits for the text stories in my post but I think most came from Weird Tales (with the title changed and the author often not identified).

I think there is a source that identifies pulp stories by their first line, but I'll have to double check on that.

On a related note, I just got my issue of From the Tomb #22 (British horror comics fanzine) which has part one of a two-part story on Eerie Publications.

 

Well worth seeking out and getting. Over all a very good article and I'm looking forward to part 2. There were a few things that weren't included that brought up questions:

 

1) His complete list of Eerie Pubs titles does not contain Tales of Terror from 1964 (listed in Overstreet). Is this a phantom listing (i.e. a book that doesn't exist)? Not surprising if it is - GCD also has slightly different counts than his list (one more Weird, two more Tales From the Tomb, and I think one more Horror Tales) but I suspect GCD is wrong here since they don't have cover scans. He also fails to mention the entire Eerie ashcan edition story - surprising)

 

2) He mentions that in the 293 issues he has, he only found 4 stories that were not reprints/remakes of pre-code stories. (I suspected this was true myself but it's good to have someone confirm it). Three of them were Blood Bath, The Thing in the Cellar, and Voodoo Terror, which he attributes to an "undisclosed" artist. These are generally credited to Chic Stone, but the fact that he didn't mention this makes me wonder if Stone did them or not.

 

3) He mentions that "Powell" did the cover for the 2nd issue of Weird but fails to say that this was Bob Powell (yes THAT Bob Powell).

 

Finally, I strated to take a more systematic approach to identifying remakes/reprints. My list is still woefully incomplete as I only have about 100 Eerie Pubs mags and about half of all pre-code stories. Here are the additions I made yesterday and today (now I have to add them all to GCD):

Tales of Terror does not exist. OPG has mistaken it for Charlton's one-shot of the same name, which is not a comic magazine.

 

I've corresponded with Gene Broxon, who wrote the article, and he admits his counts are a tad off. I don't have the issue handy, but his WEIRD count and his HORROR TALES count were off by 2 and 1 respectively. The rest were right on. Fun article, by the way.

 

Yes... those are THE Chic Stone and THE Bob Powell.
