It's been a while since I checked in this forum. Great reprint information! I see that you mentioned GCD a few pages back. Has this information made it into the indexes? If not, I can give it a push. Last time I looked at the Eerie indexes they were essentially cover scans only.

Here's a request from someone looking for a story. Sounds like something Fass would have printed in an Eerie magazine. Does anyone have a clue?

"Hi Ken ... could you help me find an issue or know someone who could? I would definitely give a finders fee of $100 if this story is found (and proof that is the issue I'm looking for).

My Holy Grail that I look for at every convention is a story from b/w Horror comic around 1973-74 (or earlier). The story I am looking for has twin trapeze artists who join a circus. They rob the circus and kill the midget owner and dispose of him by throwing him in the lion cage. They are found out by the circus clowns, freaks, etc and are chopped and mutilated into becoming a two-headed sideshow attraction.

Could you refer me to someone who has a clue what issue that could be? It feels like it is loosely adapted and based Tod Browning film "Freaks".

I don't think it is Eerie or Creepy, as the stories in the issue were really quite bloody and graphic and that's something those two series never really did. It could be Nightmare or Pyscho published by Skywald, but I'm not sure. The last time I saw this issue was when I was in 3rd grade in 1974 (my school teacher had it in her play area of the homeroom ... very un-PC of her, but really cool!)."

Thanks,

Jack

I've probably added about half of it to GCD but haven't updated GCD in months. It was getting cumbersome having to re-edit issues every time I found new info, so I think I may just wait until my Eerie pubs collection is complete before I start up again.

The story was called Monster Freakout and appeared in Weird v6n2 (March 1972).

It was likely reprinted in other Eerie Pubs issued, but not in any of the ones I have (I have about 200). Art was by A. Reynoso.

It was a remake of Revenge from Mysterious Adventures #15 (August 1953).

I will try attaching an image of the last two panels of the Eerie version.

Thanks for the story ID and the scan!

Also big thanks for putting reprint information into GCD. Yes, editing issues can be cumbersome. I hope the promised new software makes it easier.

Jack

PS. Sorry for the slow reply. I was out of town for a few days and am desperately trying to catch up.

Hi Selegue & all others interested in Eerie Publications, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the downloads posted by Jeffb on this (Thread /Subject?) some time ago are still accessible? I really love the old Iger studios art found in the black & white reprints that were Published by Eerie in the late 60s and early 70s. Any direction would be appriciated, thanks .

Also got some Gredown magazines (Aussie 1970s reprints) that reprinted Eerie Pubs stuff. So far nothing new. I don't know how or if they got access to Eerie's material (i.e. did they get art from Eerie or did they just get the magazines off the newstand and copy them). If the latter, I suppose there's a possibility that some Eerie material unpublished in the U.S. found its way down under, but I doubt it.

OK. I've finally taken my first stab at identifying some of the unsigned art and thought I'd start a series of posts.

I still haven't done detailed side-by-side comparisons yet so a lot of this will change.

A question mark means I am not entirely certain. For some of these, I am 90% certain they are correct. For others, it's more like 60%.

A double question mark means I'm REALLY uncertain and a lot of these are probably incorrect.

I will also include a bit about each artist. (and I mean a little, I haven't started really researching this yet - the info is just what I found by doing a very quick web search).

First up is an artist I called "doe eyes" until I realized that he signed a good deal of his work. His tell is the way he draws eyes, especially female eyes. In stories with only men, he is harder to identify.

For each artist, I indicate their name, birth and death year (if know), an indicator as to whether they were Argentine or not. and the # of stories I've credited to them in brackets:

Walter Casadei (1924-1978) b Italy, d Argentina [70]

Casadei moved to Argentina in 1948 where he worked for the Argentine navy and also began drawing cartoons for magazines. He started in comics in 1957, soon joining the Columba publishing house where he created the character Star Kenton.

Sadly, my quick web search didn't reveal much about perhaps Eerie's most prolific artist. I'm guessing he's Argentine as well, but I'm not sure.

I am unsure of many of these attributions. The main tell I see on Fraga is the way he draws those starey eyes.

The common link between the Argentine artists seems to be the publishing house Editorial Columba where most, if not all, of them worked.

Oscar Fraga Argentina [72]

Fraga worked at Editorial Columba in the 1960s.

Another one I know little about as of yet (then again, I haven't really looked yet) and about whom I have a number of doubtful attributions.

I think this is the guy referred to as an "unknown genius" or words to that effect in Stephen Sennitt's Ghastly Terror.

Woromay has what I refer to as the "psychadelic" style (or at least one of them - he seems to me to have two different styles). He did sign at least one story as "Woromay" and another as "LW".

Ezra Jackson was art editor and did most, if not all of the illos for the text articles and stories. Ghouls Mansion is actually signed by Jackson, but it doesn't look like his art to me (for some reason, I have "CB" in my notes for this one)

Larry Woromay (1927-2007) [37]

Woromay started his career just as the pulps were fading out, then entered the comic field where he did horror work for Atlas, Ace, Gillmor, and E.C. in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he worked for Charlton and Warren. He also worked as a painter and spent 20 years as director of the Nassau Puppet Theater on Long Island.

Better Off Dead? (HT v2n1); The Blackness of Evil? (TFTT v2n4); The Blood Goddess (TFTT v3n5); Creature of Evil?? (TT v3n2); Demons and Vampires (TOV v3n3); The Devil's Looking Glass?? (TFTT v3n4); The Devil's Monster (HT v2n5); Evil Monsters?? (TT v2n4); Feast For Vampires? (W v4n5); Ghoul Without Pockets (HT v2n2); The Ghouls? (TFTT v3n6); Gruesome Shock? (TFTT v2n1); The Heads of Terror (TT v2n1); The Horrible Thing? (TOV v3n5); It Came From the Grave?? (W v6n1); The Jungle Ghost? (TT v3n1); Mask of Horror? (WT v2n4); Mechanical Monster? (TFTT v2n4); Nightmare For a Hero? (TOV v5n2); Over Her Dead Body?? (TT v2n6); The Shrunken Monster?? (W v4n3); Signed in Blood?? (TOV v3n1); The Skeleton? (WT v2n5); The Slimy Snakeman? (TOV v3n2); The Thing From the Grave?? (TFTT v2n3); The Thing in the Parlor?? (TOV v4n1); Tunnel Crawlers?? (TOV v6n2); Twanng (? ); The Twisted Brain? (TOV v4n3); Vampire Flies (TT v2n1); Vampire-Ghouls? (HT v2n5); Walk the Edge of Darkness?? (HT v2n6); Weird Magic?? (TOV v5n1); Weird Vengeance? (WT v2n1); The Witches Coven?? (HT v3n4); Zombie For a Day? (W v4n2); Zombie Magic?? (HT v3n3)

Ezra Jackson [10+]

The Blob (W v4n1); The Bloody Thing?? (TFTT v2n1); The Claw (TT v2n1); Ghoul's Mansion (HT v5n2); The Witch and the Werewolf (HT v2n1); The Witch Doctor?? (TFTT v2n1)

Ah Ayers. Everybody's favorite Eerie artist. His stuff (with an exception or two) you can spot a mile away - the popping eyeballs are one clue, as is the fact that every male character he drew for Eerie seemed to be the same guy (he also signed occasinally with A or AA).

Oh the Chic Stone section reminds me that if a story was reprinted with two different titles but the same art, I list it twice (i.e. The Beast in the Cellar/The Thing in the Cellar).

Eerie loved to do stuff like printing the same story with 2 (or 3) titles or using the same title for 2 (or 3, or 4, or 7) differnt stories.

Ayers (1924-) [30]

The story of Ayers' legendary career it too long to go into here. He started in the field in 1947 and has continued to the present. His most famous work came at Magazine Enterprises (the original Ghost Rider) and Atlas/Marvel (where he worked on westerns, Sgt. Fury, the Hulk, Captain America, Kamandi, Fantastic Four and many others).

The Beast From Below (W v5n3); Bloodsucker (TFTT v6n2); The Burning Creature (WW v2n1); A Corpse For the Coffin (WT v2n4); The Corpse (WW v1n10); Curse of the Vampire (HT v3n4); The Dead Demons (WT v3n3); Dead Witch (TFTT v2n4); Deadman's Ghost (HT v2n6); The Demon From Beyond (WT v2n1); The Demon Star (WW v2n2); The Devil's Zombie (TOV v3n3); House of Monsters (HT v2n1); The Hungry Ghoul (TOV v3n4); I Chopped Her Head Off (TT v2n1); Isle of Demons (TT v2n4); The Killer Creatures (TFTT v2n6); Mask of Horror?? (WT v3n3); The Monster From Dimension X (SG v1n9); Monsters Nightmare (HT v2n3); The Mummy (HT v3n1); The Demon Satan (HT v3n1); The Sewer Werewolves (W v4n1); The Spider (TOV v4n1); The Strange Corpse (WT v3n1); Swamp Monsters (TFTT v2n2); The Tomb (TT v3n4); Vampire (WT v2n5); Witches Revenge (W v4n2); The Witch's House is Haunted (W v4n1)

Chic Stone (1923-2000) [6]

Chic started in comics in 1939 at age 16 as an apprentice at the legendary Iger Shop. In the 1940s, he worked at Lev Gleason, Fawcett, and Timely before leaving the comics field for magazines and commercial art in the 1950s. He returned to comics with ACG (American Comics Group) in the early 1960s before moving on to his most well-known role as an inker for Marvel (especially on X-Men, Thor, and Fantastic Four. His later career included work at DC, Dell, ACG, Skywald and Archie Comic's Red Circle line.

The Beast in the Cellar (W v12n3); Blood Bath (TFTT v2n4); The Corpse Macabre (TFTT v2n1); The Slimy Mummy (TT v2n5); The Thing in the Cellar (HT v1n9); Voodoo Terror (TOV v3n1)
