Mega Budget Movie Special Effects were born...
They were? tongue.gif

good ones atleast...

tongue.gif

Actually I'm just messing with you. I personally think good special effects can be seen early on in the War of the Worlds 1952

AN Oscar winnner for Best Special Effects.

What I was getting at is when a movie company finances a mega budget film that entails

over 80% of that particular movie in special effects.

The only film to come close to these budget costs was original "Planet of the Apes".

I made more money scalping concerts in the late 70s which led me to buying lots more books at shows shy.gif
There's no end to the amount of laws you've broken. 893whatthe.gif

Plus, one of the most beautiful cars EVER was produced in the early 70s...

Wouldn't that honor really go to the Lamborghini Miura SV? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

West

Nope. The Miura is overstylized Eurotrash compared to the pure joy of the Ferrari Daytona's lines.

Watch the Gumball Rally sometime and listen the sonorous V-12 sing like an opera star cloud9.gif (with Raoul Julia behind the wheel).

[i'll try and add some better pics tonight. smile.gif]

I can't believe no one has mentioned the ONE defining movie of my teenage years...wait for it:

HEAVY METAL!

The music and *ahem* innovative animation was just breathtaking. 893scratchchin-thumb.gifgrin.gif

EDIT: Okay - jeez - just call me Mr. *spoon*. frown.gif Obviously no one mentioned it because the freakin' movie came out in 1981! tongue.gif

Do I get points for old age senility? insane.gifgrin.gif

OK, I don't want to pick apart your favorite movie, but we'll just have to disagree. I do think that closeups of the death star were awesome, but don't forget that there was a lot of walking around out in the desert;

the riveting scene in Obi-Wans living room;

sitting at the bar table chatting with Han;

the trash compactor scene;

the incredible effects of Darth Vader choking someone 5 feet away. grin.gif

And for technical giggles....

In the first shot of the Millennium Falcon, the ship is missing its radar dish;

C-3PO sustains a dent on his head during the Sandpeople attack, but the dent appears, disappears, and swaps sides frequently during the movie so that would definitely qualify as a "special" effect;

When Luke is searching for the runaway R2D2, a rope can be seen dragging a droid that passes in the foreground from right to left.

The arm of the crane supporting the floating torture device is visible for a second or two when it enters Leia's cell.

And who could forget Red Leader's helmet mike switches sides several times just before he crashes.

But the best effect was the Rubber sole of Chewbacca's foot as he follows Han Solo in the Death Star. thumbsup2.gif

I'll stop now before Newt challenges me to a flame war and I don't want to tick anyone off, I just think that rose colored glasses are used too often with the original versions of Star Wars.

The same can be said of one my favorite shows...Star Trek. 27_laughing.gif (but the 60's get a pass devil.gif )

look, we could geek out and talk about this all day long

but if this wasn't the point where movie company's took huge

gambles on movies that were special effects dominant...

then which point was it?

think about what I am saying,

and take your time answering...

this I gotta hear.

Probably around that time. With rare exceptions along the way. Correct.

I was just hung up on your 80% of the film quote. confused-smiley-013.gif

Let's agree that if David Cassidy were in Star Wars it would not be worth watching. tonofbricks.gif

Just as a personal bias we also now have Nickleback which just makes me sad

Nickelback is the epitome of soulless, boring, unoriginal cookie cutter rock music. Right behind them is Matchbox 20 and Three Doors Down. Icky_anim.gifyuk.gif

AFC might take the superbowl lead back here soon.

The tally still balances in the NFC favor though 21 out of 40 bowls,

but the AFC isn't far behind with 19...
