I spoke with Greg, owner of Black Cat Comics today. He said that when Crain came through on his last road tour, it was just him and April. No husband from Black Flag. He also said Crain was markedly different from the last time he came through (2 years ago). More of a diva, more full of his own “celebrity.” I’m not sure where Clayton thinks this leads. Take away the variant covers and what’s he contributing in the hobby?

“Sorry to be such a pu$$7.” This Black Flag guy has a flawed internal view of masculinity.
Take it from Macho Man Randy Savage, “Macho Men can cry!”

On 8/22/2022 at 2:57 PM, CGC Mike said:We appreciate everyone being patient with our follow-up regarding the Clayton Crain acetate covers. After discussions this past week, CGC will assign a Qualified Signature Series label to comics that contain an acetate cover by Mr. Crain, as well as his signature that has been witnessed by a CGC representative. This also applies to the Ultimate Fallout: Facsimile Edition #4 that sold in C2E2. The grade assigned will take into consideration the grade of the acetate cover as well as the interior book. For members who have already submitted copies of the Ultimate Fallout issue to CGC, we will extend an opportunity to have Mr. Crain’s signature applied to their copies so they receive the Qualified Signature Series label. If a copy does not exhibit Mr. Crain’s witnessed signature, the book will receive a qualified grade.
Going forward, CGC will only certify artist-created covers that are first approved by CGC, and those covers must be signed by the artist through the Signature Series program to receive the Qualified Signature Series label. The cover must be created by a published artist.
So two quick thoughts here:
1. this says that signed and witnessed acetate covers will get a Signature Series Qualified label with a grade that “will take into consideration the grade of the acetate cover as well as the interior book.” Then it goes on to state that a copy without Crain’s signature will receive a “qualified grade.” So basically, Signature Series books will grade higher and unsigned books will grade lower. So, this was a masterful corporate PR pivot to soft-sell the Signature Series and a future Crain in-house signing.
2. Apparently, future after-production covers will need to be pre-approved by CGC. I assume there was a little Marvel finger-wagging here and CGC’s pre-approval will in-turn also require Marvel’s pre-approval as the IP holder. In short, it’s exceedingly unlikely this will happen again in the future with a Marvel book.

Yeah, CGC's out is the step in their process they outlined saying the acetate cover needs to be previously submitted to CGC and approved. Now that Marvel has made their stance clear, nothing will get past that step. At least it shouldn't. Well played, CGC. Well played.

A friend of mine who has done exclusives in the past received this from Marvel:
Subject: Clarification of Exclusive variants
Hello everyone,As you all continue to expand your businesses, we want to thank you for continuing to explore exclusive opportunities with Marvel through our exclusive retailer variant program.By participating in our program, please remember that all cover artwork must be created and approved by Marvel. Once submitted and accepted, no retailer has permission to use these comics or art to create new products, edit, or change the published comic in any way. This of course pertains to all past and current comics. We have updated our deal sheets for all retailer variant cover requests moving forward to emphasize these points. As always, thank you for everything you do, and we appreciate your cooperation and continued support!Best,David -

Oh wow I didnt know the "bid" portion
That sucks, so it can be bid up? With an established starting point?
Yeah. When a bid is made, usually, it adds another 10 seconds to the clock. So, that definitely compounds the inflated prices. So, if you bid with 1 second left, 10 seconds are added and other buyers have 10 seconds to outbid you.
There's a buy it now feature, but it is on a separate screen during the live feed and not as frequently used. Some people just let their live feed sit there with nothing going on for hours on end with buy it now listings available. I've heard those tactics are not terribly successful.
If you have a bunch of sub-$10 back issues, it kind of begs the question why you don't just list them on ebay and wait however long it takes for a buyer to come along rather than tie up all your store's bandwidth with a live feed.
It works for some things. If a book that was dollar bin last week spikes up to $50-100 because of this week's streaming episode, sure go live and auction it. As a seller, you'll do great provided you have a big enough following that you don't just get one guy low-ball bidding you. But for low dollar filler issues, what are we doing here?

Dear God. And people do this voluntarily? That sounds like torture.
Yes. Instead of wanting a Meet the Skrulls #1, going to ebay, finding one, and buying it within 10 minutes, you tune in to one of many sellers going live at different times throughout the days and weeks, watch for hours on end, then click "bid" versus however many others are watching and pay probably 200%-500% what you should be paying in order to "win."
I watched and bought some things a few times, but I honestly couldn't imagine paying attention for as long as people are selling. As a curiosity, just tuning in randomly to see what was being offered, It was kinda interesting. If you're looking for one thing in particular, though, it's not ideal.

Can someone clarify something for me? Whatnot appears to be like ebay only with live sales?
Yup. Another way to think about it is like Instagram Live Video sales, except with a built in payment system. You have to apply and be "approved" to sell.

I mean, you're answering your own question. You see something and now you don't want to do business with that company any more. The fact your personal denial of business has no effect on the company's bottom line isn't really the point. People are vegetarian for ethical reasons despite knowing that their individual decision not to buy a hamburger has no impact at all on McDonalds.
Some people just don't want to deal with shady people/companies - even if the people/companies aren't even shady/unethical 100% of the time (I mean, that would be something if they were). CGC isn't fudging all the grades they give out. Just the ones for the "prominent members of the collecting community," I imagine.
Like, I won't ever buy from a Heritage Auction because the owner is a crook. He could care less.
I've submitted one comic to CGC ever. I own probably 6? Definitely single digits. I just like raw books better. You can read them.
