I recently purchased a Amazing Spider-man 298 CGC 9.8  and noticed upon inspection that the right corner of the book has a tear or missing piece.  I don't understand how CGC would have graded this a 9.8.  Unless it was manufacturing error. I have seen many 9.8's  of this book and I have seen any issues with the corners. I was wondering if someone can tell me is this normal should i get a refund. Or is this common with this book. Comics can be damaged after being encased by CGC. It is known as SCS - Shaken Comic Syndrome - and can leave damage as pictured. Always buy the book - not the label!

There was also a trick to use a pen or pencil between the fingers to rapidly hit both buttons with minimal effort.  I saw some massive scores achieved that way.  As a kid, I never could figure out the technique.

Being the 80s, the cool kids always carried a fat comb in their back pocket and I had a friend who could use that comb, between his fingers as described, to hit those buttons with blinding speed! :ohnoez:

I have never, and will never, fly to a convention. I've never actually been to any large size comic convention, I couldn't care less about that part of the hobby and I would never even consider flying to a place just to have CGC do anything to my comics. I know that's something many people accept as part of the hobby, but I don't. I'm also one of those strange people who doesn't like anyone, not even people involved in the creation of a comic, write or draw on my books. So all that standing in line for hours stuff is lost on me. I don't do the whole celebrity worship thing.

Would you consider flying directly to Florida and CGC with the comics? I hear Sarasota is beautiful this time of year.

No I was not upcharged after grading. I am just confused, since there is a space on the ME form to declare value. And IIRC I saw a comment on a different thread from a CGC employee to write the value of the comic after being graded, which would make sense... BUT if it did get downgraded and they say that they will only pay out $400 as it was the original value declaration, that would feel horrible.

This is definitely a conversation you should be having with CGC. Hope the bend is non-color breaking and they are able to give it a quick press and re-slab and return it to you in the same grade! :wishluck:

Would value declared be the value declared when sending back as ME, or the original value declared? In my case, I submitted a modern book that ended up getting a 9.8 (value now over $2k). I only declared it at $400 originally.

You declared it at $400 on the Modern Tier. Did they upgrade you to a higher tier and upcharge you when the book received the 9.8 grade and higher valuation? If no, the value of the book is only $400 and all you would possibly be reimbursed if they agree the damage was their fault.

  7. If you have pics pre-grading, send them to CGC. You can send the book back to them to see if they can repair the corner, but it will then be re-graded and may come back a lower grade. If it does you can ask them to compensate you for the value of the book (the amount you declared when submitting the comic) but be aware that the comic is then their property. Or you can see if they will compensate you an agreed upon difference between the two grades and return the comic. Don't take this as the official CGC stance, it is just what happened to me in a similar situation a few years ago.  (thumbsu
