Lots of great feedback everyone! Thanks to all. And a lot of conflicting opinions which is usually the case here (and everywhere else in life). I agree with the comment of just doing BIN and if it sells it sells. I've done that. *If* I don't really feel the need to move the particular book anytime soon. I see that a lot on Ebay. People set prices that must be of the mindset of "I don't really wan't to sell this book, but if anyone is crazy enough to buy it for 3x it's value I'll sell it". That's why it always cracks me up when people have a book priced high and say that they are selling on Ebay for $500. When actually there might be one listed on Ebay for $500. Look at the past sales search and the last actual sale was for like $175. Anyway, since I really do need to sell these soon and can't afford for that one right person to come along 8 months from now, I'm going to keep them in the auction and hope for the best.

My biggest potential mistake is I sent them all to MCS raw. Then afterwords requested they send them in for a C&P and slabbing. That's an additional $53 per book. I probably would have been better off just selling them raw. The grades didn't go up much (except one) and it literally took almost 6 months for them to come back.

And just in case anyone was curious, MCS's grades (before C&P and then an official CGC grade) were as follows:

    Atom - 2.5 (came back 4.0)
    Batman - 3.0 (4.0)
    SGFLL - 4.0 (4.5)
    X-Men - 5.0 (6.0)

My experience with MCS is to price my raw comics listed with them as if they were a grade higher than MCS has graded them (I think most of their customers know they undergrade). Non-keys will take a while to sell, and you can lower your prices by 5% every few weeks or so if you want them to reappear in the new listings. But my experience with MCS' auctions is that any non-key comics always go for way less than I expected - I assume due to a lack of auction traffic when compared to the other big auction houses. I can't even imagine how dismal the auction traffic will be over the holidays - Comiclink doesn't even bother running a monthly auction in December.

Sorry @Black_Adam, failed to reply to this previously.

Currently, easiest way consign raws that you'd like to us send to CGC for you would be to contact Este (our consignment director). The slabbing costs we charge consignors are CGC's standard rates minus our dealer discount--we pass on the full discount to our consignors. You also pay $6 per book to cover shipping to and from CGC.

Once we get them back from CGC, they're set up as regular consignments in your account at the standard rates, yes.

Thanks for the info. As a Canadian that's a far better option than having graded books sent all the way back to Canada just to return them back across the border to MCS. Will save a bundle on shipping. And I'm sure you're sick of hearing it, but Este is awesome to deal with and one of the main reasons MCS is where I buy and sell the most online.

All right, THIS IS MY YEAR. Combining the magic of science, and the science of magic, I have arrived at the winning total.

    BEHOLD!

    $1372.84

    (Anyone got that one yet?)

Thanks Dr. X as always, this is one of my favorite Xmas traditions!

Dr. X definitely puts the X in Xmas as far as these boards are concerned

  4. How do we consign raws that we would like slabbed before they sell? Do we go thru the normal Sell My Comics page or do we contact Este? And is it just the normal fees for slabbing (MCS takes care of the shipping)? And when they return from CGC they are consigned as if we have submitted them graded (10%)?

The decision is made based on what we think the item is worth, not the price the consignor sets. There's not much historical sales data for that issue in 9.4, but the data that we do have produces a value estimate lower than $150.

I went ahead and turned that off for now anyway, so the best offer option is available for all items if the consignor wishes to use it.

Not sure how you knew which comic I was referring to (or who I am) but the auto-decline option still isn't available on that listing.

Best offer isn’t available on some lower valued items. The thought was that we didn’t want people haggling (or pricing higher in order to haggle) on a $25 item.

It may end up being simpler just to allow it for everything, we’ll see as it goes along.

This item is listed at $150.

To those asking about best offer, it's now available to all consignors. From within the page where you would set an item's price, you'll see options now to allow offers to be made. If anybody has a large number of consignments and wants me to turn offers on for a lot of stuff all at once, please PM me. Planning to add a bulk edit ability later to let you do that yourself, but that's not done yet.

Once you've enabled best offer, you'll be able to receive offers placed through our web site and through eBay. Integrating make an offer with eBay wasn't the easiest but it works and I'm proud of it. :)

And if anyone has questions or suggestions for improvement, please PM me or email at conan@mycomicshop.com.

Thanks for the Best Offer option! I have now updated 22 of my 23 consignments. But for some reason Best Offer was not allowed on one of my comics. (shrug)

Recently I had three consignments with them. In the fixed price consignment area I sold an Iron Man #1 in vg- for what I thought was a great price for both parties. The second comic was a JLA 10 vg- that kept sitting in the fixed price area that I lowered to $45. It still wouldn't sell. So I put it in the auction site where it is now fetching over that price. This has happened with me a lot and I can't find a rational explanation for this. I'm not complaining mind you, but it strikes me as odd...

I've also had more than one comic languish (for months) in their for sale section with zero interest, even after dropping the price over and over by 5% to keep it in the new listings, only to finally give up and toss it in the auction and have it sell for higher than I had it listed for. :screwy:

  9. Bottom line: MCS is my favorite site for consignments, graded or raw. Auctions? Not so much. Their weekly auctions don't seem to generate anywhere near the amount of bidders as Comiclink and I have almost always been disappointed by the results with anything auctioned there. 2c

Always appreciate feedback from the boards. I'm curious if you could elaborate on this point: "They will grade very conservatively so don't consign high value keys. You won't get the same return that you would selling elsewhere."

Anything in the $2000+ range we strongly recommend be slabbed before sale, which we can do for you (few exceptions, like something that's $2000 in PR doesn't benefit from slabbing as much as a book that's $2000 in 8.0). Once it's slabbed, the biggest difference is that our commission is less than 10% for sales over $300, vs 10% at most other venues.

Below $2000, we can still slab items for the consignor if they want, we just don't require it to the degree that we do for books in the $2000+ range.

For items in the $200-2000 range, what other venues allow you to sell the book raw, and you see providing a better return due to the book not being graded as tightly as it would be with us? My impression is that most dealers and auction houses are primarily selling books in this range that are slabbed, not raw.

We are working on a batch of updates to our web site and consignment options, so any feedback and recommendations here or via PM are welcome.

Can I ask how many graders you have and/or whether comics are viewed by more than one grader to reach a consensus? I don't have too big an issue with MCS' conservative grading as I price the comics I consign with you accordingly, but I sometimes wonder about the consistency of the grading. I have in the past bought $100+ raw comics for my collection and then, after finding upgrades, returned them to your company for consignment (having never removed them from the labeled MCS mylars) only to have them graded lower than the grade assigned when I bought them (not on every occasion, but it has happened multiple times).

I know grading is subjective, but to me consistent grading and tight grading are equally important when it comes to keeping both buyers and sellers happy.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I was just curious to see if anyone uses My Comic Shop for selling comics? I sent some raw books in for consignment sale and the grades they gave were horrible 😲

Your complaint is a common one. MyComicShop is a great place to consign graded comics but often frustrating when consigning raws. Their conservative grading always surprises sellers but, for buyers, is a bonus (when compared to the questionable grading at many other online vendors).

My advice is to set your pricing at the grade you believe the raw comics to be and, with the quality scans MCS provides, see if buyers agree.

The book is FF49, which sells for ~3k 9.0....I think its worth the chance in removing the color touch, no?

Depends on your intent. If you want to sell it, I would proceed on the assumption of a returned grade of Blue 7.5. If that means a profit for you, any higher returned grade after CT removal will just be a bonus. If you plan to keep it, leave it the way it is. CT removal will just make it fugly. And if you have an issue with purple labels in your collection then you probably shouldn't have bought the comic in the first place.
