Yes, in the interests of saving electricity and our planet I didn't bother re-scanning any of the comics I already had scans of. If anyone needs a better scan, or a shot of the back, or a photo of the comic in question held up beside a newspaper with today's date to prove the comic hasn't come to any harm while held hostage in my collection I am more than happy to oblige!

  2. Unexpected #122 – CGC 9.0              $150   $135   $120

HTF DC Bronze horror! Took me forever just to find this 9.0. With only a dozen known copies in higher grade (the highest being one lone 9.6) you will most likely have a long wait hoping for a better copy to wander your way.

  3. First time dipping a toe in the CGC sales threads pool with just a handful of slabs to test the water (staying in the shallow end for now while I test out my hyperbole and exclamation point key). Some of the pics are ones I saved from when I bought the comics from Comiclink or MCS as their scans always seem better than mine (one day I really need to figure out how to play with the settings on my scanner…) The comics that look like I scanned them myself are from my own collection (raws I had graded). Now, the rules:

o   No Probies or Hall of Shame members.

    o   Payment via Paypal.

o   Shipping: $15 for 1st slab ($3 for each additional slab) in USA and Canada. Overseas shipping at cost and only to established board members with references. I normally ship in 2-3 days.

o   No returns on graded books unless I have missed something major.

o   References: Have bought a ton of stuff (probably too much) on the boards if that counts for anything. Also occasionally sell on eBay as comic_gems

Ok, first new book for the thread. This is one I have had for about 25 years, and just got it graded in the past month. And before anyone asks, I did know about the resto. This is the first, and one of the only, books I bought knowing it had had work done. Great looking book, even with the purple label. GPA data (supplied below) shows last sale of a C-1 restored at $460 nearly a year ago, and I am basing my price off of that.

Here are a few nice Little Audreys that I also had previously, but had to sell.   There isn't much interest in these books and the market prices have really plummetted, at least going by recent ebay and Heritage sales.  Richie Rich and Little Dot are still strong, and Casper has some fans, but Little Audrey is near the bottom, along with Baby Huey and Sad Sack.   But I love these early Audreys.

I'm a fellow Harvey fan (mainly Bronze age), but other than the PCH stuff I think Harveys are doomed to keep declining in value mainly because the once iconic characters have been basically out of print for almost four decades and are sadly and slowly fading into comic oblivion. There is a top-3 graded CGC 7.0 Little Audrey #1 (Harvey 1957) in the upcoming Comiclink auction. It will be interesting to see how that performs compared to previous sales and first issues of Richie Rich and Casper and Spooky from the same era.

I purchased a cgc graded comic in a recent auction at one of the big auction houses. I thought the scan showed a small crack so I called the day of the auction to inquire about it. The fellow was very nice. He pulled the book and inspected it, and assure me there was no crack. He said it must’ve been a glare in the scan.

Well, there is a small crack. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s there, and it was not disclosed. I sent a polite message just pointing out the discrepancy. Here’s the response (the 2nd part of the response is the reason for this post):

“The comic inside is what has value, the case can be changed at any point at any time by CGC. It is there to protect the comic within and the label above. Because cases crack all the time, as long as the crack isn’t large enough to change the label or comic within, CGC only charges a $15.00 fee (Hence our providing $15.00 worth of store credit) to reholder the book. (ReHolder $15 (for books under $50,000 FMV. Otherwise $25)

So, unless you’ve invented a way via osmosis to transfer the comic and/or label through that very, very, tiny, hairline crack, I think you’ll be good. Trust me, we crack and resubmit comics on a daily basis. (See Attached.) And if we thought the crack in the case was egregious we would certainly work something out with the buyer. Though in this instance, this is not the circumstance.”

Does anyone else think this is a bizarre response to a purchase of several thousand dollars?

I would suggest asking them to have the comic reholdered (they say they do it all the time) as there will also be shipping costs and the risk, if whatever caused the crack actually damaged the comic, of a drop in grade. Once it is back in the same grade in a new holder I would then be satisfied. Otherwise I would expect a full refund. This seems justified based on the fact you called first to see if the case was cracked and was mistakenly informed it wasn't - obviously influencing the bid you placed.

On a side note - one of the many things I like about MyComicShop is they always list any defects with the case, even scuffing or minor debris trapped inside.
