  1. I agree 100%, I didn't even call him out on that - it was a long work day and I didn't really want to spend too much more time dwelling on his story inconsistencies. Last I checked the ad is still up, but I'm on the fence about it.
  2. Saw an ad yesterday picturing a 181 with a description of 200 hulk and Star Wars comics (full run of the latter)....I had some appointments in the evening, eventually met the guy at his place around 7:30 PM and saw the books. The seller was a tradesman that was doing renos on a house and found a box of comics in the attic...he was a nice guy, but talked a mile a minute and was a bit all over the place. The Star Wars was a full run, the condition varied but issue 1 was probably the ugliest copy I've ever seen, lol. The hulks were solid, straight run from the 100s well into the 200s, condition varied with these as well - mostly mid grade, some lower, some upper - certainly not 'MINT' as described and not worth the 50k the guy thought they were. I put the 181 around a 4.5/5.0, maybe higher but it had some staining and writing on the back - but overall presented well. He was really pushing me for a price, but I didn't want to take on the work of selling all the other books I didn't want (everything minus the 180/181, lol)....he told me they were definitely going to sell last night and that someone was paying him $7k CAD, with a $3500 deposit already emailed to him (which sounds like total BS but that's what he said)....I ended up leaving since I had to get home, even though he was really trying to get me to buy them then and there. I told him I wouldn't have offered that so we left it at that, but said if he gets 7k that's a very good price and should be happy with it. Last thing, he said he does renos so I asked for his business card or if he had a website and he had neither, lol....I made some joke about trying to give him business but then laughed it off and left. We'll see if the add is still up in a few days, I might follow up with him....
  3. 1000% stolen, but hey - fortune favors the bold! Definitely the risk of, we'll take your money - and your wallet and car too!
  4. When you drive 'out to the sticks', you're essentially pot-committed to buy something!
  5. In an ideal world, sure, but we're taking about kijiji/craigslist flakes where anything goes. I suppose someone could show up agreeing to the higher price and then beat them down in price after they see condition, that's the oldest buyer dirty trick around. What's good for the goose is good for the gander...
  6. I don't know see anything wrong with the seller asking $500 if it's still a very good price, it's their stuff to sell - assuming you can drive there and actually buy it for $500. What I don't like are the sellers that jerk you around. A few weeks back someone posted a few long boxes for free (they were out to the curb). I wasn't going to bother since it didn't seem like it was worth my time, but I had an excuse to drive out there (maybe 20 minutes from my house), and told the seller I'd give $40. She said sure, but then later responded with saying they were gone (someone grabbed them, which is quite possible). A week later they're back listed for sale with a best offer by the seller....
  7. If a house move doesn't stimulate you to downsize your collection (if that is your plan), then nothing will! I've done a good job selling off a lot of what I have (remnants of a 10k comic purchase several years back) knowing that we're thinking of moving in the not too distant future. I don't want to be logging stuff I don't want to have with me (not a part of my long term collecting PC), nor do I want to be doing a desperate bulk sale at the last minute if I find I'm scrambling to lighten the load...
  8. If that Sunoco is filled with unleaded gas you're rich!
  9. Are VHS really that collectible, or just very very niche/rare ones? I've seen lots of people trying to get a buck a piece for bulk VHS sales? I mean the technology is garbage, aren't vinyl records supposed to have premium sound quality?
  10. Nice grab, the pawn shop is the real swindler! But not astute enough to look through them.....I dumped 5 long boxes of NM bagged and boarded sets and mini series on them for $125 a longbox at a local pawnshop (it was a bulk sale at about 1/4th of retail). My books were priced to sell (I had labels and stickers), but he kept the labels and inflated the price sticker at absurd prices on some of them - so greedy he won't be able to move them.....
  11. But in the card you leave a note, saying you would appreciate any referrals, etc. One of my best antique store scores was when I saw a pile of crud comics from a seller that I had no interest in, and by being courteous and professional he gave me a tip that the antique store in town had comics. It turned into quite the plunder....everything for a buck, I found five copies of SSM 64 (among many others).....
  12. Nice grab. What I would do is, send him a thank you card now for his time and the comics, and include a gift card to a restaurant or coffee shop. It doesn't matter if they say they don't want any money, they'll appreciate the gesture.
  13. I'm just catching up on this thread....if I were you I'd delete this post; your name, address, banking info is all public! It wouldn't be hard for someone to defraud you with this sensitive information readily available....at least redact it out! Yesterday I was reading a story of a colleague that had 150k stolen from her bank account and the bank did nothing about it.....
  14. Frustrating, but the owner's books, so what are you gonna do? Reminds me of an auction I went to years ago where the auctioneers and their assistants were tossing comics around carelessly. What does this say, Amazing Spider-Man #3, toss it this way Brad. A handful of us were cringing in silent horror....now I look back and laugh.
  15. Amazing! And this goes to show just how important it is to have capital on hand!
  16. Good job! I'm at the point now if I see something like that, I quickly just buy the lot, or pass....my time is valuable these days...
  17. That is a crazy haul, how many comics are we talking about? I'm surprised a collector would be flushing them out at a buck a piece instead of selling them as runs?
  18. After I picked up the regular series, I realized the story is actually fantastic. And there was a very strong reader following that developed....I thought over time issue 1 (with its 3500 print run) was a great buy and I was happy to hold them long-term even if it didn't pan out.....anyways we'll see, happy to have sold my two slabs but if the prices don't spike I won't be selling any of my copies - no need.
  19. I thought something must have been up when someone popped by two yellow label 9.8s today, 1 and 2. Luckily, my full run expired (which I was on the fence about selling anyway).....but I have about a dozen copies of the green number 1 I bought dirt cheap after the series crashed.
  20. Non key copper and moderns have always had very low demand.....we'll see what happens!
