  1. Inflation is at 4.9% (where I live in Canada), so there is potential inflationary pressure - but we've already seen the affects of inflation (CPI, housing, collectibles, etc.), which is why they need to raise interest rates. Bonds actually have an inverse relationship to interest rates, equities too. If raising rates does not curb inflation, then yes prices will increase - but it might not increase on a real (after inflation) basis. If rate increases curb inflation, and discretionary income and in-debted households start suffering from the rise in monthly mortgage payments - selling comics will be the first thing to happen for people struggling to make ends meet. The point is, no one knows what will happen, but let's not put all our eggs into comics which should never be treated as an investment in the first place (at least not in lieu of other investible asset classes like housing, equities, bonds, etc.)
  2. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but let's be clear here that when interest rates rise - big collectibles will more than likely come under serious selling pressure. It's quite possible these books might correct 10-50%, no one knows....let's just focus on collecting these books and try not to spend too much on the price fluctuations.
  3. Once they rise interest rates, all comics across the board will be under pressure. Now is the time to lighten up extras you don't want....
  4. Amazing! This is quite a collection! I hope the family keeps some of this stuff to remember him by!
  5. I think the label has to be more obvious than a fine print that will likely be missed by many buyers. Especially if the seller does try to conceal the print with a blurred photo. Restored labels need to be easily identified with big purple coloring across the entire label so buyers are immediately notified....it should be a red stop light, not a 'no littering' sign on the highway.
  6. 11 copies of X-Men 4, how many copies of X-Men 1 did this person have - 100?
  7. Comics also have an inverse relationship with interest rates...as interest rates head back north that will cause downward pressure, especially for those guys that are highly leveraged sitting on a pile of debt. They'll be the first ones to sell/dump, and if that triggers a wave of selling panic will set in and cause others to sell. I think we're due for a healthy correction, and it's a long time coming.....
  8. I dumped 5 complete sets of longs for $750 - CAD, they were NM/NM+, marked, labelled etc....perfect for shows. The pawn shop ironically gave me the best offer, some dealer wanted a payment plan. I'm like wtf, you can't rub 1k together??
  9. I'm more of a less clutter/inventory turnover type. I'm actually about to dump full runs of comics for a buck a piece, because I'd rather move bulk out and clear inventory/capital and then focus on higher dollar items. I would probably be the one to dump those X-factor 1s for a buck a piece, than to purchase it. I've read comments on here of some of the guys with multiple books of a book that gets hot and they're unable to capture that opportunity because their books are so cluttered. I think everyone should be able to retrieve a comic within 60 seconds, and if you can't, then you have to really figure out if your disorganized, or simple overwhelmed, and if that is hurting your ability to be more productive.
  10. There's a person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed store owner here that really low balls the %(&@ out of people....a few years back a guy brought 11 short boxes of his collection and the lazy fat store owner wouldn't even come outside to take a look! The collection was mostly indies, but there was a run of Spawn 1-100 in NM shape, among other books...at the time Spawn wasn't worth anywhere where it is now, but it was still a decent buy. That same store owner faced tax penalties by the government, and one of their employees started a go fund me campaign in which the store received thousands in donations! Community community was livid!
  11. Great pickup. And good point about sometimes you have to just pay up to a seller's asking price. I missed out on a great collection because I was $200 apart - $3200 versus $3000, which was ridiculous! I was a bit swamped with comics at the time, but I should have just paid up for it because it was a solid collection.
  12. This. I don't think the supply has diminished, but the number of buyers/flippers has exploded in the past 5 years.....8-10 years ago, there were very few real people I needed to worry about competing with. Today, that still stands true on higher dollar stuff (as the new guys/flippers are generally less capitalized or less likely to pay for higher-dollar collections), but the more affordable stuff goes quick. And for the guys that only flip one or two books, anything can be fair game....
  13. I'm sure there is value here, but with a very large quantity bulk buy, where do you as the buyer walk away? How are you going to eventually sell all these copies, or will you be doing a neatstuff collectibles sale - bulk a huge chunk of them out as a lot.
  14. Well, we all know the seller of that book, and the history of that stash....I think it's safe to assume that price is unrealistic.....I was the first buyer to 'set the bar' on The Maxx Black over 10 years ago, and people thought it was crazy to have someone paid $500 for Maxx Black. ComicSutra did a great job marketing these books, and they were very rare - but from 2008 and before the demand for the Maxx Ashcans was extremely low....it took many catalysts for their market to get where it is today. I look at a lot of other rare books from dead characters and the price trend is a slow, gradual decline off its peak. So whatever I pay for these books now, I"m happy knowing long-term I'm probably not going to get that back and will more than likely eat the loss. Conversely I just paid 20k for a TOS39, worst case I'll be able to get my money back from that at some point if I ever decide to sell - but in all likeliehood it's going to increase in value over time.
  15. Well, I don't care what you paid....I'm just not familiar with the history of sales on them. Not counting the period before 2005, when Maxx ashcans were still pretty damn cheap (if you can find them).
  16. I checked out a collection today that I normally would have passed on (I got enough information from the seller to know it was probably a dud), but it was less than 10 minutes from my house. A guy that had about 2k comics he's held since collected from the late 80s/90s....he was a travelling musician and the place absolutely reeked of cigarettes (and it was a bit of a dump), I always worry that smell will get embedded in my clothes. Most of the comics were unbagged/unboarded - Marvel/ DC from that era. I didn't really go through them in detail, the smell was really bothering me (which is saying a lot because I work in real estate!), but I chatted with the owner and gave him some free advice. His price was high (crazy high), but he might come down over time once enough people pass on it. There's some value there...i'll follow up with him, but this is an easy one to pass on if I don't buy it. In the unlikely event I buy them, they'll be stored at a buddy's house.
  17. You didn't answer my question, 85% of which price - the MCS 22.5? Would it be a fair assumption to assume you haven't received offers of 85%? I let my GPA expire, I can't recall the market on these books.....
  18. 85% of what price? I think MCS had a red that just sold.......could be wrong, but I thought they had one around a few k?
  19. Amazing books in this thread guys! What kind of premium do you place on a book with White Pages over Off-White pages for the same grade? 10%-20%?
  20. If you are partial to any of the comics, whether they have value or not, you can simply get high quality mylar and full backs to protect them (if they are not in them already). You may want to keep at least a few, as a legacy to your dad.....
  21. Wow, that's quite the adventure....choose your own adventure, lol!
  22. Lol, he posted the list above!! Since then the OP has disappeared, I wonder if he's legit, if the comics or stolen, or if one of you snakes already bought the books off him.
