Did anyone else notice the Avengers#4 cgc 9.6 on CLink last night?

 

I believe this Ohio pedigree copy took quite a hit ... they advertise it as having sold in 2011 for $91,500.00 but closed last night for under $30K ?!!?

Ouch! Prices in the high grades seem so volatile?

 

I like to buying these SA keys in the "collector grades" (I am looking for raw 2-2.5's and slabbed 4-4.5's)... much more liquidity and much less volatility!

I'm sure some of the BSD's here would know better but that "90k sale" was definitely an anomaly if accurate imo. Looking at gap, there has never been a 9.6 sale even close to that number. Even still, 30k is LOOOOOOOOOOW for that book!

I'm not a sig guy but even if i was, i cant imagine i would try it on a fairly valuable 9.8. Even if you just want it for your collection and REALLY want the sig, i'd say go with a lower graded copy. Too many things can go wrong with a 9.8

I really wanted this book in the Schmell auction last year but just couldnt go high enough since i was waiting for the 57. Not yet in hand but paid for and on the way now. Super psyched to have gotten a 2nd chance to own it

I dont know who the seller was but putting it in a no reserve auction was NOT a wise move imo. Avengers 4 is as dead as dead can possibly get right now. Prices across the board have plummeted so there was no way in hell that was going to get a good price. Last week a 9.4 went for barely 10k. It wasnt that long ago that 9.2's were getting almost that price.

Also, there just arent many HG high dollar Avengers collectors left from what i can see. It seems like most of the Schmell books that I didnt buy all ended up at Metropolis. I would bet that you will see the Ohio Avengers 4 in their marketplace for 50k'ish REAL soon (thumbs u

What is the general consensus regarding the value of ASM #1 vs. FF #1?

 

I suspect if it hasn't already, ASM #1 may soon surpass FF #1.

I looked at LAST GPA SALE and its not even close!

 

4.0 ASM 3383, FF 4700

6.0 ASM 5826, FF 8365

8.0 ASM 14,500 FF 38,000

9.0 ASM 33,000 FF 145,000

 

FF1 is a 10 cent issue from 1962 and the first appearance and origin of the FF!

 

ASM 1 is first of the series but defers to AF 15 for the first appearance of the webslinger

Barring something major, it isn't going to happen anytime in the near future. Like he said, FF1 is a 1st appearance and a MAJOR one at that. ASM1 will always be behind FF1 imo.

I'm almost embarrassed to post my copy, after seeing so many in such amazing condition. Still, it's my pride and joy and probably the best condition I'm prepared to pay for. I'm guessing 1/1.5 at the most. Pages inside are all uncreased and intact, despite the beaten up cover.

Can someone explain the PLOD grading to me please?

That Hulk 1 looks about right but someone posted a 6.5 AF15 PLOD the other day that looked 9.0+. A few people commented and explained they thought that PLOD differed from qualified labels in that they still grade the fixed defects like tear seals and what not. That doesnt seem to be the case with this book so im confused how they determine grades on PLODS???

I rarely buy Silver age anymore for myself, but I've been wanting a nice looking Hulk 1, just can't afford an unrestored copy in grade.

Yeah, I remember when you first posted the Borders bookcase. It's what inspired me to try and find one. I missed out on a vintage comic spinner rack that someone had on Craigslist for $150.

 

The thrift store actually had two of these, but i don't have the room for two...not to mention, it would cost me a year's budget for a small country to fill it with slabs....at least, based on my collecting focus

I REALLY like yours because it stores the upper slabs individually. You cant really tell from my pic but all the slabs in mine are stacked 3-4 deep so you dont get to see most of them

We bought a house last summer and it has an in-law apartment. Being we aren't using it as such, I decided to make the bedroom a comic room. I am still in the process of putting it together, but I was so excited when I found this at a local thrift store. It was from "Daddy's Junk Music" store and was used for music books and sheet music. I put the white contact paper on the front to cover up the logo and stuck the stickers on there from my local LCS.

I agree. I am not a big fan of PLODS and it does bug me. But the way 3.0s look bugs me even more. I think the next big pruchase is going to be a universal IH 1 in 6.0 if I can scrape together the cash.

I totally agree! As much as i dislike PLODS, i would 100% rather have your book at the price i imagine you payed rather than have to shell out 100k for a comparable looking Blue label.
