  1. I think that was DD mint copy of FC four... many moons ago... that one of greatest conventions I have every attended.. real people real collectors and great prices... thanks for the look back...many many pioneers of early comic book fandom has passed on..a true unappreciated group of tough guys and gals whom 99% of of the population thought we were losers or crazy and on drugs. Not money times like today... but I hope somebody can record those times. I know Robert Beerbohn has written the history of the west coast comic book market unpublished and still in raw fourm. The old saying you had to be there applies here... everybody kinda new everybody if that makes sense....it like you were never alone... being there with your brothers and sisters.. as opposed to 2017 SDCC..,more people, bigger building.. but some respects we as true comic book collectors have never been more alone. The difference is simple... real people with real heart their for the true appreciation of comic art.
  2. super thead. great awareness for me as a collector, especially the" Nemo" covers
  3. Theo Holstein art collection must be up there too..27 barks paintings, pulp paintings, ec and comic book art etc etc
  4. The one possible solution for the SDCC is to let the studios/gamers/toy collectors have the main room, they can charge more for tables...move all the comic book dealers to an adjoining area or room, possibly where the autograph areas are , not charge to get in for ANYBODY, charge dealers lower table prices(just the cost of set up).
  5. I understand it beats lugging boxes, but what about the "excitement factor" have WE just become a bunch of internet zombies...who click and buy, click away...what about the joy of looking and finding a comic book you have wanted in a long box..a surprise...I think its more the "passion" that has been taken away...the joy....the kids today don't know what I am talking about..they grew up with it......Dylan said it best" the time they are a changing". When you approach and go thru a "old time" dealer...then its Las Vegas time...anything goes...you can find just about anything, probably because the dealer himself does not know either...LOL but really.....I don't like the direction comic cons are going in terms of the true comic book collector who treats comic book collecting as a passion, not as a business or a widget...WE ARE GETTING SOLD OUT TO A BUNCH OF 'HELLO KITTY' TOY COLLECTORS...ZOMBIE GAME PLAYERS..GREEDY MOVIE STUDIOS...we are getting stamped on with a boot in the face... such is the march of time.
  6. I have gone to probably 44 out of 48 shows, maybe 45....The little dealer is getting squeezed out by the big comic book dealers..for example it appeared CC had expanded presence. When the all the little guys go...well the competition for prices diminish. Clearly the show has changed for the worst for SA/GA collector in terms of finding dealers whom might be unknown or not with a major web presence. Like it or not, we need to migrate to Wondercon and make a "custer's last stand" on that show, the ship has sailed a long time ago on SDCC. I could have missed him was Terry Stroud there at the con this year?
  7. CGC vs SDCC is apple/orange and cannot be lumped in the same sentence. Unless you were at the beginning of the SDCC you might not understand how or why we ended up with today's mess, and it is a big one. CGC is a mixed bag to me, but I am glad it exists. I dont like the fact you cannot touch or feel the comic book, but it does protect the investor....the widget buyer from buying something he would not be aware of such as restoration. If you want the unslabbed book you can buy it cheaper and feel, read and enjoy it which is ok with me. The behavior of the speculator," the widget buyer" is another story, sometimes paying 5x the current market price on a difference of 9.2 vs 9.4.. in which you need a microscope to see any difference .now that could qualify.
  8. Yes the odds have gone up....but for every true comic book collector, its 5x as many gamers, toy collectors, Hall H addicts....everybody who I have talked to noticed the change..the comic book sections compared to the media sections were very noticeably thinner than EVER. Why use the word "comic" or even" comic con" call it what it is a circus...
  9. I highly recommend the John Benson " Reed Crandell book, its amazing. John is working on the Graham Ingles book...its gonna be killer. The traffic at the convention was in the media centers like WB, Fox etc..such a shame
  10. I have probably attended at least 43 of the 48 years of this convention. I can tell you, our community spirit of fellow "geek" collectors was never as strong as it was in the first ten years or so, especially the first 5. If you have not been reading the mile high comic book newsletter, you might want to read the explanation of why MH has after 38 years or so, called it quits. For me, this is the first year I can look you in the face and say...WONDER CON BLOWS AWAY SDCC in terms of comic book collecting. Milehigh's comic book absence was an anchor for comic book collectors....it is gone. Bud Plant has been coming the same amount of time, he is a excellent comic book/ pulp new book seller with some collectors older books available . He was another anchor...you could rely on Bud to show you stuff you were unaware of and his booths were large and staff friendly. He is down to one small booth, at the back of the convention as a result of high table prices, replacing a small and loyal movie poster dealers who was priced out .Unless you ask where is he, you are never gonna find him. SDCC has no reward system for the people who helped shape and create this convention making it the biggest and no longer the best comic book convention, it should be called San Diego Motion Picture/TV/Game/Toy/ Pop Culture and believe me if they could they would drop comic in New York minute . SDCC HAS NO RESPECT FOR THE TRUE COMIC BOOK COLLECTOR...Rows 1-5 now Gaming and the true SA/GA Rows is getting less an less each year...we are the Minority...we have been overrun by greedy toy collectors who want special editions, Media companies etc...NO RESPECT...no loyalty discount...for the foundation builders. This is first year in at least 43 where I came home with NOTHING and that is where this convention is heading, we fellow SA/GA collectors are window dressing of this convention, as excuse, a "Beard" for the real purpose. SDCC: you Ain't what you used to be, and never will be again, I understand that, but you have made a terrible mistake and left behind, the real heroes who help create this convention world when it was unpopular and had no respect. Now you have grown so greedy and big....you give the big $ spending your attention and disrespect US and say a table is gonna be $1800 plus set fees and we don't care what you sell and what you can afford...leave if you cannot pay what we demand. They don't care if you have been there for 30 years or 5 minutes. SDCC has only one thing left...kick asss panels...forget the dealers room, I attended last night on of the greatest panels ever in my 43 years..."The EC Fan Addict Club Panel" of course it set at 8pm one hour after the main floor closes. I can tell you I learned more from that panel, which was one hour, than I had reading a number of history books, especially on Ingles, and Craig. Roger Hill kicked it out of the park. He however, rudely interrupted by SDCC staff in the middle of sentence saying that the panel was closed and they need to put a movie on. We then were kicked and spend another hour in the hallway, talking and finishing an amazing panel. I will come back FOR the panels...but that is what is has come down too...a shocking downfall of disrespect and shell of what it was meant to be.
  11. At prices like these, it seems everything is an investment. Note carefully how Vinne of CC describes the cgc effect on the comic book market, turning it into investment widgets on that video above. I would be more impressed with a "raw purchase" of books such that you can feel and read them...I think just about all widgets..restored or or unrestored in the CGC case qualify as investments....you can read them, touch them..etc..and you are buying not just the case...but now as the market as turned and vinne says "3d party grading to protect your nontraditional investment"....
  12. the stigma of restored books will not be felt until prices downturn..then those books will be the most price effected if the market demand lowers due to a price correction. The less buyers, the more picky the remaining ones are. Be safe...Be blue
  13. the results speak for themselves, CC thought 3 mil and JB got 7mil...perfect timing, selling just before the crest of the wave in overall prices...
  14. So vince says in the video today that the auction total hit over 7 million which easily clips Billy Wright collection, and there pre-auction estimate was 3-4 Mil
  15. You are the "man" great collection........glad you kept the important material that was most important to you...
  16. CC really pushed this collection hard....going for the world record.....they did a great job with these results and put them on par with Ha.com
