I'll admit, I'm kind of operating on the idea that companies sell "exclusives" for $100-$300, but I am leaving out that some places charge $40 for a variant at their table at a convention - which is not terrible - It's the aftermarket jump in price that is not sustainable.

For instance: Lady Death Masters #1 just came out, there are EIGHT different variants ranging from $25 - $489 and ALL but ONE are sold out. To compare, Lady Death Blasphemy #1 came out a year ago (roughly) and I gave up trying to count all the different variants - so we'll focus on the one I bought: the Chamber of Chills homage cover. It was limited and have a couple variations. A typical b&w version of the variant sold for $99 at the end of 2021. When it sells (not a lot of brisk sales) it sells for $35. The one I bought cost me $40 + shipping on a BIN. Is that a problem? Not for me - because I'm not the one who paid $100 for a book that's only worth $40 a year later.

There is something deeper at work with our brains, the manipulation of our emotions by social media posts. There's a reason the human brain needs to slap down stacks of cash at every "exclusive" that comes out. You think publishers haven't put together that the more "exclusives" they put out, the more smooth-brained collectors snap them up? Some of these people's brains squirt dopamine like a cheap porn star the minute someone drops a variant. THAT is the problem - and to each their own, we're all chiming in here with out opinions. Mine is no more important than anyone elses. I had a comic shop in the 90s, and I sold $20 variants to people left and right, that's my perspective I can lend to this discussion.

Well said. I agree that the social media manipulation is killing peoples brains. Human beings are insufficiently_thoughtful_persons and other people are always going to take advantage of that. Every single book has a “first appearance” now too which has the same effect.

    True.
    And in the 90s…

If you wanted to listen to music, you had to use a CD player.
If you wanted to watch a new release movie, you had to line up outside the theatre before it opened.
If you wanted to play a video game, you could go to an arcade or fire up your Super Nintendo on your massive 32” floor mounted television set, which weighed more than your Pontiac Sunfire.
You wanted a comic book that was popular, your local dealer MIGHT bother with the struggle, going to church conventions to scrape up that Spawn #4, which is literally nowhere to be found.
Wanted to text and chat with your crush? You’re spending your entire warm Saturday during the summer, indoors, on your Pentium 133 with 16 megabytes of ram, on IRC or ICQ…

Yeah, things were much different in the 90s.
And comics were a much different thing.

Exactly. That’s why there will never be a “crash” like we saw back then. I’ve been listening to people say that the industry is doomed for at least ten years.

The problem is that in the mid-90's, you dropped $20 for a variant cover. That's $40 in 2022 dollars. These people are dropping several hundred dollars on variants. It may have been a problem in the 90's - but the problem now is magnitudes of what we've seen before. The variant glut was a factor in the hobby crash back then - and very little money was at stake for collectors compared to what they are blowing on it now.

The crying is going to be when they are 40 years old and still living in an apartment with no chance of scraping enough money for a down payment on a house because they blew it on a stack of plastic that has no resale value. They'll be crying that life is unfair or that everyone else is to blame why they don't have any money - and they'll soon find out that acetate won't soak up those crocodile tears.

It's impossible to compare the 90’s to today. It's such a different world where people in Australia or Japan can buy your comic book online in real time instantly. The world is a much smaller place and that makes the market so much bigger.
I honestly think that this is just how the comic book “industry” is now
Some people buy books to read. Some buy to ‘invest’. Some to flip. Some because there’s a movie or series coming out.
People also have ALL the information available at their finger tips now, which includes all the risks and rewards of buying books. That wasn't the case in the 90’s.
I really can't see the problem and the comparisons don't make sense to me.

First and foremost, lets just hope that nobody got hurt. I know we all have some very expensive books sitting over there, but would hate to hear anyone passed away or got hurt really badly due to the severity of the storm.

I am baffled if they are storing the submissions tracking data on site and they would not be using AWS. This could be part of the problem why we have all lost our submissions data on the site if all of this is on servers that they have on site and maybe power was lost.

One guy I watch on YT who has visited the facility says its like Ft. Knox over there so it should hopefully be able to withstand any kind of damage.

I know. I get it. Saying that “all your books are destroyed” is uncalled for though.

Of course it is going for $20+, I didn't order but 3 of the action figure variant.  Love the cover A but I just didn't order as I figured I could grab some later if I wanted.  I have only been ordering the regular SW series since about #20.  The reviews I have heard thus far of the regular series have been lackluster.  Oh well, I guess it will be 2nd prints for me.

Just picked up the action figure variant for cover on Ebay (Australia). But there's not many around.

Ive never had G/QC last more than a couple days. They dont charge for prescreens until G/QC , other than that , if they havent charged you , then it was an oversight on their part

Didn't do a pre-screen. The money is just sitting there waiting to be taken, and I’m pretty sure they won't forget 😂

  7. I haven't submitted for a while so this is kind of a noob question...

When my books have hit the Grading/quality control stage, how long do they stay there?

I haven't been charged for one of my orders either which is weird, but I'm assuming that it will happen before they're shipped.

    Thanks for the help,

    Jamie

I know they go for less on average, but it's been awhile since I bothered checking their books. I just don't trust them in the first place.

The guy who runs Halo was an overstreet advisor and has been personally recommended in the overstreet guide. They’re a small operation but a good one. You'll never get the same resale value, but for books for your PC, they're great, and from what I've experienced, their grading is tight. I'd go with them before PGX.

My biggest spec is Revival #1 from Image Comics.
Fun fact: it turns 10 years old in two weeks...
Beyond the 30+ raw copies of #1 sitting in a short box AND the 4 CGC 9.8 SS of the sketch cover...
I also purchased the original art for the first 5 covers (plus a variant cover).

Second place would be Manifest Destiny #1.

Why revival? I remember when they were hot year's ago but they fizzled out. Is there a reason why you're speculating on them now?

Jamie, you can try emailing customer service (who can take credit card information) and let them know a good time to contact you for that information.  Use service@cgccomics.com.

I rang them this morning (my time) and the phone was answered very quickly. The gentleman I spoke to was very helpful and the issue is all sorted out now.

  11. I have been trying to contact CGC for the last couple of days to pay a payment that was bounced due the use of an expired credit card. I have a new credit card and all I want to do is one simple thing; Update my payment details.

I’m in Australia so firstly, I have to ring just after midnight because of the time zone difference, and secondly, it is expensive for me to wait on hold for a long period of time just to be disconnected. I have also tried emailing accounts twice and received no response.

I’m at my wits end. I have one particular book that I need to pay for now, and 7 others at CCS that I will have to pay for shortly. I HAVE the money and I have a card, but if I can’t contact anyone, how can I pay?

Just to be clear, I’m not blaming anybody. I just want to pay for my book so I can have it sent to me. Can someone from CGC please contact me! either via PM, or in chat? I am more than happy to provide my new details online. Please help me fix this.

    Thank you,

    Jamie

  12. Does anyone have any idea where I could change my credit card details for payment of submissions? It's not that easy for me to ring as I am in another country and I was hoping to do it online but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this.

I have two lots of submissions in and I don't want to slow down the process any more.

    Thanks!

    Jamie

Just got home from seeing Eternals in 3D XD (Cinemark's version of IMAX). I was going to go to the regular IMAX, but as Cinemark had theirs in 3D, I opted for the Cinemark. I don't regret it.

As for Eternals the movie itself (and I'll try to be plot spoiler free)...

How ironic for me that the lowest RT scored MCU film ever, is also now possibly my favorite MCU film. I know, I know, I'm a resident Marvel shill in these parts, however, I didn't think Black Widow was that great (and posted my thoughts over in BW), so with that, I can say I don't automatically love every new MCU movie. I did love Shang Chi, but I loved Eternals even more.

Eternals is the MCU movie I've been waiting for. It is the first MCU movie, I think, that is about things outside of the usually hermetic world of the MCU. In other words, while MCU movies are pieces of a larger whole, they also obviously serve their own story, usually involving a Marvel hero or heroes powering up physically spiritually and mentally as they try to stop whoever is threatening the world or galaxy. The stories, as good as they are, don't really exist beyond that. With Black Panther and Black Widow, I saw the honest attempt to touch on other things not necessarily MCUish  like themes of family, leadership and responsibility, etc. Now while those movies did touch on these themes I mentioned, they didn't necessarily affect the outcome of the story or the hero's journey. In the end, the plot of movies like Black Panther or Black Widow is still reliant on the hero themselves overcoming  odds placed on them by an adversary (I guess Killmonger is an abandoned royal family member) which leads to the hero powering up and stopping the bad guys, regardless of love or family or humanity. Eternals on the other hand, besides being about a group of super-powered beings and their journey to powering up and saving the world, directly deals with themes of love, humanity, family, and human history and evolution(in a fictional 2001 Space Odyssey sense) and has these themes at its core. Eternals as a movie takes these themes so much to heart that these themes affect the outcome and plot of the movie. And the reason these themes are so engrained to the plot of Eternals, is because the Eternals have spent an eternity living with humanity. I loved the story.

As for more technical issues: I thought the cinematography was great. I didn't see any plot holes to the story. I liked the music.

I do have distinct theories why so many critics disapproved of the movie. I'll post those theories later.

But yes, I think I can honestly say that Eternals is my favorite MCU movie. Even over Captain Marvel.

I’m glad you liked it also. I would also put it into my top 5 Marvel movies. I seriously can’t understand the negativity but I’d love to hear your theories on why you think it was disapproved by critics as they may align with my thoughts. I think that when the dust settles on this film, it will be regarded more highly that it is right now but regardless, I loved it and I encourage people to make up their own minds.
