  1. I've never been a Western fan, but I'm a Gil Kane fan. And Kane drew a ton of great covers for these books in the Bronze Age. And they're definitely not easy to find in nice shape.
  2. Same here. I think it's because the book is more recessed in the new slab. I use photoshop to boost the brightness of the book but leave the label as is.
  3. Great book, Bill! And one of the best all-time Spidey covers too.
  4. You're not missing anything. Mile High's prices, grading, and customer service have all been frequently discussed here over the years. I'd be surprised if anyone on the boards would choose to defend them. MCS has many fans here. And deservedly so.
  5. Beautiful book. The white pages are appropriately amazing.
  6. Apparently, the Comic Book Gods decided to share a piece of heaven with us mortals here on earth.
  7. It's pretty much an established list. Marvel designed most of their covers from November 1971 through December 1972 using a distinct layout where the main cover art is in a box surrounded on three sides by a solid color. The design makes it seem like the artwork is framed, hence the "Picture Frame" moniker. Just scroll through this thread and you'll see hundreds of examples. Thanks for clearing that up for me! Most of what I collect isn't quite that old but I did get this a few months ago. My wife was on a business trip and spotted a comic shop across the street from where she was staying. She wanted to pick me up a gift and asked what to look for. I told her anything spiderman 80's or older and this is what she came back with. I liked the cover so I added to the comic book wall in my office. Looks like a sweet book. And it sounds like you have a sweet wife too.

  9. This thread might be closest thing to what you're looking for. If there's another thread like it, I don't remember seeing it. GPA might also be of some use if you're willing to take the time to search through various titles. Same thing with the CGC registry. As far as I know, the Oakland books have been spread around a lot over the years. But here are some I managed to reunite:
  10. Unfortunately, the 158 and the Iron Man 44 that was at the shop didn't survive as well. It's amazing how tough books always seem to stay tough books. I know the Hulk #158 and Iron Man #44 are dark covers. But there are plenty of black covered books from the same era that are relatively easy to find in high grade - DD #93, Hulk #151, Hulk #153, etc. And it's not like Hulk and Iron Man were obscure titles. I wonder if it could have anything to do with circulation figures for those particular books.
  11. That's an amazing haul, Greg. All from the same place/dealer?
  12. Note to self: Always page count Ah, I was wondering how that happens.
  13. It's mostly the usual suspects - kids, humor, Westerns, reprint titles. But these are some of the surprising books without 9.8s: Avengers #103 Avengers #105 Captain Marvel #22 Incredible Hulk #158 Iron Man #44 Marvel Feature #6 Marvel Premiere #5 Marvel Spotlight #2 Sub-Mariner #43 X-Men #76
