  1. Great topic and great pickup. While I think X-Men 95 is a solid choice, I might humbly suggest that if GSX 1 and X-Men 94 are feeling out of reach, then the "next best" (in terms of being a notch or two down in value while still being a sought after investment among serious X-Men collectors) would be something more like X-Men 101 or X-Men 129. Good luck in the hunt! Yeah I was wondering if the "next best book" idea was to go for lesser keys (like the 101 and 129 above or Daredevil 7, X-Men 4, Journey Into Mystery 85) or second appearances (the X-Men 95 shown, Daredevil 2, X-Men 2, Journey Into Mystery 84). Second appearances is definitely a much cheaper way to go. Lesser keys might be the more profitable. Since he posted the X-Men 95 my assumption is he is talking about the second. So here are a few "next best books" I've got:
  2. I don't know in this specific instance. But in general there is a friction between collectors (who want comics to stay at a price where they can continue to add to their collection) and investors (who want diamond hands/to the moon).
  3. So do we expect some of the Egyptian gods to be victims in Thor: Love and Thunder?
  4. It was a good first episode. I assume the other episodes will have more Moon Knight and less Steven Grant.
  5. Truth be told, this is where I am. I have bought exactly 1 'investment' type comic in the last two years. And even then it was $500, not in the range it seems you are looking. But given that you seem determined to invest in comics that's why I gave the advice I did about not investing in a comic that just went up 400% in the last three years. Prices these days have got me going back and buying comics from my youth/young adulthood instead of the early silver and gold comics that most would call 'investment' comics. Sienkiewicz Moon Knights and New Mutants. Miller Daredevils. Watchmen and Dark Knights. Perez Teen Titans. Claremont and Byrne X-Men (though many of them are out of range now). But again, I know you have most of the stuff that you would collect and are looking for investments, which is why I didn't go this route.
  6. I cant remember the exact time I bought BB28, but it was around the time of the 1st Snyder Superman going in to production. I bought it at 8. It climbed steadily, went up a good amount when Justice was announced then the price bombed when the film turned out to be lemon. Its gone back up a little since but my Marvels its been quite poor. I know Im meant to hang my head in shame if I mention I buy the odd one every few years when I have savings to make money on in my older years, but obviously its these things you need to look at if youre brave enough to put your head over the trenches and risk taking the bullets of the "purists" . Think youre right, Im 49 so by the time I plan to cash these in around 15 years from now they will hopefully have risen quite a bit My point was not to make you ashamed for your purchase. My point was to say I don't like buying into a comic that has quadrupled over the last 4 years or so. I think those are the comics that are least likely to hold/increase their value. This isn't the stock market where a company can increase share price because their earnings beat expectations and growth looks great. Comics will always be somewhat exchangeable. As such I would look at those that haven't had explosive growth over the last few years and bet there. Showcase 6 as someone mentioned above. Maybe My Greatest Adventure 80. Or if you are gun-shy of DC because of B&B 28 look at Tales to Astonish 27 or Daredevil 1.
  7. It's interesting that you haven't gotten a good return on B&B 28. It had a good run up from around 2006-2014. So unless you bought in 2014 it has done well for you. In that respect both of the comics you mentioned have had a significant run up over the last 6-8 years and I would think would be closer to B&B 28 performance (since 2014) over the next 6-8.
  8. I agree with you 100%. I think everyone who has a bound volume like these should send them to me for $1 which is more than they are worth. But in all seriousness these always fascinated me. They are a look back on the early days of collecting. Back when money was not in the equation and preserving comics was. I put them in the same group as some of those early fanzines. Not the collectible, but an artifact of the hobby itself. Looking at some of the great bound volumes that people have shared here (and in RM's other thread) has gotten me wondering if this may be a way of getting some cool collectibles that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Though now people are looking at these and wondering instead what they could get if they separated those cool bound volumes instead, so maybe not.
  9. Yeah, I got a sub for my nephews who needed it for Champions League and Europa League. I guess I'll check this out.
  10. Best of luck to both of you. I'll just add my hope that the shipments do show up eventually. I've had plenty of shipments that did this and it's never pleasant.
  11. Personally I think we should in house this. We have enough knowledge and experience here on the boards that we could decide. The main thing would be to decide on our criteria. Something like: Person nominates by posting cover to “classic cover thread”. Includes “poll” with only one option “yes”. Once 50? 100? People agree it is put up to a two week proper vote with yes and no as options. To be considered a CGC Boards classic cover it needs to receive over 1/2? 2/3? 3/4? yes votes. Then we can lobby CGC to use that for their classic cover designation.
  12. When this thread started I thought for sure it would get locked for political reasons. Now I’m guessing it will be locked because Star Wars nerds can’t agree on the nature of Boba Fett.
  13. My guess is it has more to do with making it more unique for copyright reasons than who may have co-opted the symbol. Marvel makes tons of money from merchandising.
  14. Some would say CGC (and the Marvel movies and EBay) killed the comic collecting hobby. Made comics so expensive that they became an investment rather than a hobby/collection. And this is partially the result of that. In the days of collecting getting them all was the goal. Run collectors were the standard. Now, as the run collectors sell off, the investors snap up the keys and the run comics add to the glut.
  15. So, it’s certainly closer in sleeze and violence level to the comic than to the live action show.
  16. I'm adjusting as well. But the way I'm adjusting is not in what I'm paying, but in what I'm buying. Where, in the past, I was looking at getting some good collectable comics that you never would see in the days before the internet, now I'm looking at some of the comics that got me interested in collecting in the first place and in condition that I can collect them rather than invest in them. The long and short of it is I've always considered my collection a hobby and as such I'm only going to spend 5% or so of my take home on it. But I still have the collecting bug and will continue to find things I can spend my money on. Example: Previous foci: Schomburg covers, Early Marvels, Steranko covers in high grade New foci: Miller Daredevils and Early 'New X-Men' raw in fine condition, Sienkiewicz New Mutants and other painted covers
  17. So, I did a little searching when I remembered it was a thread started by @cheetah. Here's the thread:
  18. HBO Max does it again. I was watching the new West Side Story and the drug story Tony works in has a pretty good period accurate selection of comics in it. Though oddly lots of Atlas and no DC.
  19. Someone did this years ago for Golden Age Comics. A review of what grades were compared to what CGC graded them as. I don't have a link and the search function here stinks. Good luck.
  20. I'm right there with you and there is apparently no end in sight. Sent in value tier first of May been in SFG since 7/30. Last time I called I was given the random time of another 2-4 months. I'm betting they will be over a year from when CGC got the box............. Are you calling to find out? I have a value submission that was received on 7/1/2021 which, of course, is over 8 months ago so I can no longer check it's status online. @CGC Mike I know you were just bugged about this a week ago, but any new word on extending the 8 month rule?
  21. I'm definitely not looking to sell. I do it for insurance purposes. And I choose not to be conservative. If I have an AF #15 CGC 2.5, should I value it as $37,000, which is what it was worth about a month ago, or should I value it as $55,000, which is based on a recent sale? If you are doing it for insurance purposes you may want to contact the insurance company and find out how they value the comics on pay-out. No use in insuring your AF #15 CGC 2.5 at $55,000 if they will only pay you 12 month average.
  22. Silicon Valley Season 4 Episode 8 they are in the house of a tech start up millionaire and he has a print of the cover of Startling Comics 53. I had t take a photo as HBO Max apparently has code to keep people from doing screen grabs.
