  1. I think it's incredible how well written that soapbox is. He employs parallel structure perfectly and obviously hits on the emotions. Bravo Stan! On a side note: who's manning his twitter? You really think he logged in and tweeted that?
  2. Playwrights in general borrowed greatly on the Greeks and especially the tragedies. During Shakespeare's time it was common for people to see a play and copy it down line for line- it's actually how many of Shakespeare's plays survived. There is a lot of evidence that Shakespeare stole a lot of his ideas and themes from his contemporaries. Even R&J is seemingly based on a poem. Heck in a lot of regards, Shakespeare was virtually the soap operas of his day. Elizabeth changed that though.
  3. I don't disagree with you at all. Heck everyone kept saying how new and fresh Superior Spider-Man was at the time. A villain taking over a hero was such a novel idea. Didn't Ock take over Spider-Man's mind in the Lee/Romita run?... I read more Image books now than anything else. Invincible is by far my favorite super hero book. But super heroes are the entry into the hobby. Very few people get into comics with independents- although with TWD phenomenon that might be changing. I just don't mind new takes on old stories. Heck, if we follow Campbell's thoughts on stories, nothing is really new in literature.
  4. Obviously I've read both AF 15 and ASM 1- now and all of USM. I agree that the ASM stuff is probably the pinnacle of our hobby. Having said that, I think modernizing stories is important. If you look at almost all literature that has lasted, much of it has been modernized and/or translated differently to reach the new generation. Very few people read something like Beowulf or Chaucer how it was originally written. Heck even No Fear has become a great tool for reaching the next generation. I'd also add, I think DiCaprio's R&J is one of the greatest things ever. Having taught both Othello and R&J in the classroom, I can tell you that I had the richest discussions and most eyes on me teaching those texts. Yes we read the original, but we read scenes in the No Fear book and we watched clips. All those things help bring it to life. Sure I could have picked up the Branagh versions of the plays, but the DiCaprio R&J is just incredible. The beginning of the movie just captivates all the kids. I can do it line by line when watching that film... "Do you bite your thumb at me..." God it's truly great. USM did a great job modernizing the character. From personal experience, I've handed the Lee/Ditko run remastered to several kids. It usually goes unread. The minute I hand them the USM, they just can't put it down. Like you said, it's important a book captures the time period. USM reflects today's time period very well, but it also sticks to the essence of the character in a way that works so well. I re-read the start to Lee/Ditko's run all the time, but the minute I pick up USM again I'm just hooked. I think that is what SMH strength is. Like you, when my friends ask what I thought of the movie I tell them "It was fun." But I also tell them "My kids loved it." I think that's the strength of the film and this relaunch. I do think it had issues keeping the essence of the character as strong as I would have liked, but it still modernized the story very well. Just my
  5. I'm in. I'm just not around the boards as much so hopefully I'll remember.
  6. How much of it is backwards though? I'm not sure my dyslexic brain could handle it, to be honest.
  7. The point about cover artists and previewing a book is interesting. You really can't judge a comic by the cover anymore, and that makes me less likely to pick up a book with a catchy cover.
  8. I know this is an old post, but I just got caught up on almost 2 years worth of comics. They've been piling up and I just haven't been reading for some reason. TWD was a blast to read in one sitting. Shame to see what just happened... I was surprised to see how close we are to issue 200 though. It seems like 100 just came out. This pacing of the book always blows my mind. It feels like nothing is happening, but then a ton of mess happens.
  9. I'd give it a bit better star rating because of how fun it was to watch, but I agree on your points about it lacking Spidey. It really made it feel like a huge part of the character was missing. I will say that my 5 year old loved it though. He's been Spider-Man obsessed for two days now too. Nothing else had really worked and he's been an Iron Man fan for a couple years now.
  10. I really enjoyed the film. It was fun and fit the new Marvel mold really well. I'm excited to see Spidey in the cinematic sand box and this really set it up really well. Having said that, I felt like the movie lacked depth. We never heard Uncle Ben's name or anything about responsibility. That felt off to me.
  11. Do a lot of books actually go down? I thought they saw spikes than maintained... then spiked again. This book is a different animal simply because of the following it has. We are a small group. When people find out how good this book is, they are going to want it. They will have a hard time finding it though.
  12. I think the small print run and loyal following does make it a bit different. But you implied the book would go down after the bump. I'm not sure that is true.
  13. I think prices will rise a bunch and then stabilize. This book has a super small print run and it has a loyal following. I don't see the prices ever going back down to what it was a year or two ago.
  14. I know it shouldn't strike me as odd, but it is so weird people are selling the Invincible action figures for double on eBay. You can still just go right over to Skybound and buy them... Either way, figure ordered!
  15. I'm super stoked. I'm so stoked I just started my annual re read of the series. I'm glad I finished my run a little while ago. I only wish I'd bought the first few issues slabbed though. You guys should go to the movie subforum and get that thread talking. Casting will be interesting.
  16. The first arc is good, but the title really hits its stride in the 20s. Ottley comes on the title at 13, I believe, as artist and it gets way better. Kirkman builds subplots like he's writing in the Bronze Age or something. It's solid. You know... I'm off to dig this up. Saving Hyrule can wait a bit.
  17. I'd compare it more to Ultimate Spider-Man. The big difference would be it's bloodier and more adult. It feels a lot like Spider-Man though. It's odd to say that because it doesn't share a lot of characteristics, but many of the themes are similar. It's good and an easy read. I re-read the series almost yearly and it doesn't take long.
  18. Wow awesome news. This is one of the best if not the best super hero books from the last 10 or so years.
  19. The wife and I stopped around episodes 8 or 9. I cant remember which, but I felt like it got so bad. As a huge fan of Fraction/Brubaker's run on the character, I had high hopes this would be good. I also liked the main guy from GoT. I felt like it started well, but the acting and story just suffered as it went along. I even liked the guy playing Iron Fist at the beginning. By the middle of the season, he got really jarring and just stopped pulling it off. In tense situations, he just couldn't do it. I'm also not a huge fan of how heavy they pushed the Night Nurse. That just wasn't/isn't how I picture that character. Dawson's alright, but I don't think she's the strongest actress. I liked the love interest and felt she was good. Then she stopped having chemistry with Rand and I lost interest. It seemed like he had more chemistry with Joy. The father son relationship was weird. Neither of them could act. The father's scenes were decent with his assistant. Then he went and did that over the top thing to his assistant. It sort of ruined it for me. These shows have gone down hill dramatically since DD. They should really try and stick to the source material. If they'd followed Bendis' Alias, I think Jessica Jones would have been outstanding. I think the same thing with Iron Fist. I started watching DD1 as a result of this show. I'm enjoying the rewatch.
  20. What about custom titles? I worked hard for that custom title.
  21. Is he writing a new Wolverine book?
  22. Yea but if I turned my phone to landscape I had no issue with the old boards.
