A shout-out to this thread by CAF maestro Bill Cox at the 2 hour 23 minute. But the point of this thread is to not call out pieces "flipped" into a public auction with no reserves, where they will land at a final bid price wherever the market takes them...or (sadly) shill bids take them, as we've seen in the past with a known dealer and his consignments at Heritage Auctions.
Oh, and if you're annoyed by this thread or dislike it or think there is too much whining here, then stop reading it. But I guess since it's gotten over 123K views at this point, I guess it's not going away anytime soon.
I appreciate everything Bill does for this hobby, but seeing as how half his YouTube videos (and many threads here) seem more about the price of art than art itself, it’s pretty disingenuous calling out a flipping thread. Ignoring the fact that flipping definitely contributes to all these record prices is basically just gaslighting.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I have no problem with people flipping. Heck, I’ve bought a few of the pieces that have come up in this thread. Do I find some of these flips comical? Sure - the same way I find regular pie in the sky prices on dealer sites comical. And there’s always a bit of schadenfreude watching a piece sit that was specifically bought as a flip, that could’ve been happy elsewhere in a collection. But what’s more whiny to me is pretending this hobby exists in a bubble.

How long does one need to keep a newly acquired piece before relisting it at a higher price for it not to be a "flip"? Asking for a friend...
I generally consider anything relisted within a year a flip. The comic art version of short term vs long term capital gains. Lol

Check out CAF's Bill Cox hosting the Amateur Dueling Dealers here. There was some great art being offered, and these were nice pick-ups.
I thought all those pages looked familiar.

Sorry to hear it. I've had terrible luck with that, as well. Don't know if it's a systemic thing or what, but for one reason or another, I can't count on it.
Just to add salt to the wound, I did end up getting a text later. About an hour after the lot ended, and 50 lots after another lot I got a text about at the correct time.
I was willing to go higher, so I’m hoping I see it in the flip of the day thread soon. Lol

Of course the one piece I wanted today sold for about half my max, and I missed it because Heritage didn’t send me my text. Figures.

Heh, the Sienkiewicz Dune cover went for 8x its pre-auction high bid. Auction fever! Gratz to somebody; this was the rare piece that my wife told me to bid more than I was planning to do.
I was curious what that was gonna end at, because even tho I think it’s great work, I wouldn’t want to look at it very often.

Leialoha is an extraordinary finisher. The combination of these two makes it a slam dunk for me. I’m actually leaning towards the notion along the lines that Steve does “more” on this page. Yet no doubt sings as a robust Starlin.
🍇 🦍x2. I like Leialoha just as much as Starlin, so regardless of who took the reins on this, it’s a great duo and great page.

All the "Buy Stuff" links at his web site are dead: http://www.tommandrake.com/buystuff/
The "Buy" links at Jan Duursema's web site are similarly afflicted: http://www.janduursema.com/
This other web site has some nice looking work he's done but no store: https://tmandrake.artstation.com/projects
Lord. Lot of outdated sites. This is I guess the 3rd, most current website.
https://tommandrake.wixsite.com/tom-mandrake
I commissioned him a few years back emailing through this site, no issues. And I know whenever he posts new art for sale on Twitter, this is the website he links to.

I do know that people are very rude on social media and say things that are insulting that they would never say in a civil discourse to someone's face so no need to wake up tomorrow and continue that nonsense. As for your post Ankur, Great painting but ya I do not understand that jump. Been a few years but that definitely belongs on this thread, lol.
Not sure what games people are playing. You asked for examples, people gave, you explained them away. There are countless threads in the art forum detailing countless valid issues with them if you’re seriously interested in learning more beyond your positive experiences. Defending the Donnelly’s seems like a weird hill to die on regardless.

I have definitely overpaid on a few items at auction, because my collecting wheelhouse overlaps with theirs.

But really, cons are kind of overrated to me when I could just contact a lot of artists or their reps directly without the hassle.
Gotta disagree with that. I’ve had the opportunity for commissions and art purchases the last few years, that I don’t think for a second would’ve happened if I hadn’t talked to and purchased from artists directly at cons to build up those relationships.
-
For me and cons, it’ll mostly be about artists going. The last few years I’ve gone to a lot of them just to go, and hopefully I’d get to meet up with artists. Moving forward, if there’s no artists I’m interested in at a con, I’ll pass. Dealer booths and cosplay don’t do it for me.

Because sometime down the road, somebody may think that the OP’s commission is a fake.
It sucks, but to be fair, the repro didn’t copy Art’s signature. And I have a hard time believing anybody in the hobby would think the one in Micronauts guy’s collection is the fake.

If this list is based on “A” pages, you probably need to bump up Sienkiewicz New Mutants. Standard pages have been going 3-5 for a bit. But A pages are gonna be 5-10, and Demon Bear probably 10K plus.

A specific book or any book?
Malvin
I have a few different books I have a good portion of that I’m pretty sure I know where most of the rest are at. Just a matter of shaking loose the pages, which as most know is easier said than done.

My main goal for next year is to put a book back together.

I’ve thought about doing something like this... and seeing that makes me want to do it more. Great job - looks f’n awesome.

It’s a beauty. What is going on with that frame tho? Was the art knocked cockeyed in shipping?
I’m assuming it moved in transit, yeah. I’ll get it sorted.

This thread reminded me I needed a Rude piece. Started reading Nexus last year, and love it. So I ordered this cover from his website. Gotta say, one of the easiest transactions I’ve had. Ordered Sunday night, got a thank you email from Jaynelle Monday as well as shipping confirmation with tracking, and I had the art Wednesday. Even came framed, which I was not expecting. Would not hesitate to deal with them again.

(attempted) Flip of the Day!
in Original Comic Art
Posted · Edited by cloud cloddie
A flip, to me, is buying a piece with the sole intent to resell. Nothing wrong with that. You see a piece come up that’s ridiculously cheap - buy it. Sell it. Make some money and buy something you like more. That aspect of the hobby doesn’t much interest me, but I’d be lying if I said resell price doesn’t sometimes factor in to my purchasing decisions. I don’t know anybody that wants to lose money if they want/need to sell. Except for commissions - I’ve luckily been happy with most of them, but those I go into expecting to lose money if I ever decided to sell.
But yeah, there’s lots of other reasons to ‘flip’. Buyer’s remorse. Spreading yourself too thin financially. In your case, getting a piece that doesn’t meet your expectations.
At the end of the day, anybody who owns art can do what they like with it.
