When I first started really getting into buying comics I asked a dealer to see his ASM 31 and he said that I could open it...well I did a poor job taking the book out and it caught the tape. It wasn't "bad" and the dealer wasn't paying attention, I felt horrible (which I should have been) about it so I just bought it without telling the dealer.
Since then I always have the owner of the book take it out or if they tell me I can take the book out, I take all the tape off first.
Sorry no picture.

I got this book last week at a local show. I got it at a reasonable price and Im happy.
When looking at it I was thinking it s a 2.5 but the color rub is really throwing me off (I think its a 2.0) , and Id love to hear what everyone thinks.
Cover and Centerfold are attached and there is no hidden defects.

A recent purchase. I’ve been waiting like forever to read the first appearance of Happy Houligans. A one shot with a great cover.
My quandary now is whether to crack it or not. Curious to read it but might be disapointed if I do. Is it available on line to read?
What do you all say? Crack it or not?

It's not rare, but it is scarce. I don't generally see that issue available, but when I do it's typically very low grade. I wouldn't expect to see a 0.5 on the census unless it was a tough issue (13 total census). The census may be wrong too, however. Early on, CGC didn't label the Approved Comics correctly. There may be other copies lurking under the "Western Bandit Trails" title.
Thats interesting to hear that CGC might have miss labeled the book. I did have a hard time finding out the title because I wasn't paying attention to the "Approved comics" logo. I was focusing in on Western Bandit Trails
But you are the first to say its "scarce". How do you come to that conclusion? Is there a website, or do you have a lifetime of knowledge from being a long time collector or dealer?

Rare/scarce?
I own both of them.
I wanted to know the difference, and if there was a website.
Is the Approved comics 9 “scarce” like the claim, I think not. I still wanted it for the Matt Baker cover. Im also not claiming that they are, they were just example’s because someone asked.
I do see some ebay listing and books here on the boards with the “rare/scarce” in title and want to know where they get thier information.

If I share them I cant put "Rare / Scarce" in my sales thread title
Here they are. I wanted the Approved Comics 9 for the Baker cover the post it said "Very Scarce Matt Baker Cover Golden Age!" and the Atomic Thunderbolt was a late add on to a multi book deal.

Based on those census numbers, however the terms are defined, the 2 books you just bought are neither rare nor scarce.
I thought the one book with only 13 graded would be scarce. It seems like a low number, and for that matter 63 seems low as well.
I say that because Ive seen somewhere that the gerber rating said something to the effect of a gerber 6 have 20-200 known copies, but because it was released in the 90s (gerber photo journal) that you should double the number. So a gerber 6 should have 40-400 copies. Both have under that number.

As regards your second question
Commonly, rarity speaks to value while scarcity speaks to availability relative to demand
Thats is a great way to look at that.

Is there a website that will give you a Rarity / Scarcity rating? I dont have a Gerber photo journal.
The reason Im asking is I bought a GA book today that said it was "Scarce" on the post it note, and last Sunday I bought a book Ive never heard of, both books have less than 2 books listed on ebay with 1 at least sold of each. Does that make them "rare or scarce"?
One book has a CGC census of 13 (grade ranges from .5-7.0) the other has 63 (grades .5-9.0)

Ive always heard great things about Walt Simonson’s Thor run. So I went on eBay and track them down.
Also, picked up the flash by Grant Morrison and Mark Millar. I like both writers and thought it would be cool to read, not to mention one of my favorite YouTube channels recommended it.
Last but not least picked up fantastic four full circle. It is absolutely gorgeous! Great story!

Congrats Raze! No matter what shape, a great set of books! When Thoth posted that 8, I remember someone needed it. Looks like it went to the right person!
I got it on ebay when did Thoth post it? What else have I been missing?! My second hobby has been taking away from comics...

Not that I can see. Mycomicshop.com says "First appearances of the Atomic Thunderbolt, Rigor and Mortix, Mr. Murdo, and Wally Wanderlust."
