  1. Comic grading is becoming more and more like giving points for olympic figure skating. The more CGC comments on why a comic got points deducted the more we can figure out what crazy way they grade. However, it would also mean that they would have to stick to a certain criteria, which would ultimately hurt them as there are probably a lot more comics out there that are a higher grade than how they graded it.
  2. I would love for someone to just walk up to the onsite grading one day with a literal unopened case from the distributor and see how many 9.8s come from that. If anything comes back lower than a 9.8 there better be a 9.9 or a 10 to make up for it.
  3. That person on facebook's rating reminds me of people on this site who talk about comic stores that don't fit their niche; no golden/silver age back issues, not enough back issues, back issues are drek, and etc. I have never been to any place that had an grand opening let alone a first month of opening that still didn't have problems or difficulties of some sort that needed to get sorted out. Not to mention that there are more people eager to take the time to make a complaint online than a compliment. really one star??? I would have given you at least 2 stars because the place is clean and at least a third star for a nice gaming area. Then I would have written that the place looked nice but didn't have what I wanted but I would check it out in a month or two to see if any changes were made.
  4. WOuld be a whole lot better if it said "First appearance" instead of date joined... Just sayin'
  5. The glut of books that I am talking about is about quantity of books and access to them not the supposed value that some people put on their merchandise.
  6. Clickbait is just that, clickbait. Comics are a bit unique compared to other collectibles mentioned in this thread. They have art so they can be aesthetically pleasing and they have stories that entertain us. I think that's why comics can be around for a long time. The big question lies within the dissemination of these collections held by baby boomers. There are a number of people who are selling off or bequeathing collections. Some of these are known collections, others are unknown. The number that will be available may increase, which affects prices but then that can only enforce certain buying habits. It can possibly make the ungraded copies cheaper because there will be more out there --or-- it will make the graded copies go down because the new buyers want to hold and read the books. I think that if comics have survived the glut of a worldwide online market that ebay and various auction houses have incurred on this hobby, then everything will be OK. I think the uncertainty lies with current comics and whether they will see the desire of collectors as much as the golden and silver age of comics.
  7. Wow this is real hard to pick one Alive... Comic: Frank Brunner - Dr. Strange, Howard the Duck, and Man-Thing fighting against something mystical Comic Strip: Sam Hurt: Pen and Ink crazy hallucination dream sequence with the characters from Eyebeam Dead... Comic: Jack Kirby - nothing but monsters and kirby dots everywhere fighting in an arena with Galactus and the Watcher watching! Comic Strip: George Herriman - A watercolored Krazy Kat that has the moon in the background.
  8. Find a teacher who is interested in the kid friendly stuff. I love to stack my classroom (4th grade) with tpbs and graphic novels that are kid friendly but there are some factors that make it hard: price point: these books are expensive if bought individually and brand new condition: Since they are kid friendly books, kids read them and kids treat the books as you would expect. availability: I try to get them used since it is cheaper but it is not easy to find. I can't even find Archie Digests for less than a dollar these days. If I was near you I would definitely be interested in what you got to stock my classroom. If you know a teacher give them a chance to be a cool teacher.
  9. A lot more TPBs and collections from kids to adults, a little bit of "hot toys", independent comics, and a small case full of gold/silver age back issues.
  10. Well, lousy comic store is a bit subjective since they've been around for over 30 years. I think they must be doing something right. They decided to get rid of their back issue stock at least 10 years ago because the amount of space it took up was not what the customers wanted, which meant they were not getting the money for the space. To each their own...
  11. I think it is most interesting that on those TV shows I always hear that qualifier that "at auction". I realize that ebay is an auction site but I always have a feeling that they meant an auction house. My LCS says that they don't take anything after 1970 if they receive any calls. There are random people who pop in and have the normal 90's image comics. Back when there were more comic shops in the area the owner would give them their information if he wouldn't buy it, or if they didn't like the price. I don't think I have ever seen angry people but definitely a lot of disappointed faces. "But it's Spawn #1 ?!?" There are two people who sell stuff and are oblivious. The people who want the most for their collection and the people who want to get rid of it/cleaning out. I, like many of you, prefer those getting rid of/cleaning out people. Yet they can be disappointed too.
  12. There was one guy on the boards who had Kev Walker OA in their signature from the old forums... If you can access the old forum then it could lead you somewhere.
  13. I come back here to read and learn more about the underground comics. I never have anything to post cause I dont actively collect the stuff except if I can get a Zippy related item.
  14. I think you guys are responding to some guy's spam. He joins a site just to create a story and ask you to subscribe to his youtube channel or facebook.
  15. When I was scrolling down the very first thing I thought of was Shrek and Princess Fiona. That creature at the bottom should be Donkey and Puss in Boots. It is an excellent piece of work but I can't get Shrek out of my mind...
  16. I used to go to estate sales for no intended purpose except that there might be something I would want. I wasn't specifically looking for comics or anything to flip but maybe something to have in the house. They used to seem like indoor yard sales, then once ebay came, it changed and I was priced out of estate sales and then yard sales. Or they just had stuff I didn't want at all. Pretty soon there were too many misses to make the hits worth it and now I don't even do yard sales. When any estate sales said that they had comics, I never got there in time to actually see them or see anything past beat up non-superhero stuff.
  17. The only Australian comics I ever see here in the US is Footrot Flats. I think I have found a good 15-20 or so books over the years.
  18. There is a specific line of Marvel comics for kids called Marvel Adventures. They are little TPBs that you should be able to get in the kids section of a bookstore.
  19. There was trump magazine put out some 50 years ago. It was only 2 issues but I believe it was recently reprinted. There have been a number of reprints of the comic strips too over the years most notably are the Playboy Albums (insert year). Other than Little Annie Fanny I don't believe there were any other regular series in the magazine.
  20. I got the book a few weeks ago and read it. I got my comic shop to order it for me but they did not get any copies for the store. I enjoyed the book despite me thinking it was going to be a different type of story.
  21. I found this at a thrift store. I learned this is from the Philadelphia Bulletin and I know that it is Nipper from the comic strip Wee Pals by Morrie Turner. Any other info about if this was a one-off or a set would be appreciated. 20170129_120310 by phantalien, on Flickr
  22. Wouldn't it be nice if buyers/sellers were held accountable for leaving feedback? If someone leaves positive or negative feedback it would be weighted against the percentage of feedback they have actually left in the past. This way people who leave feedback every time are more "trustworthy" on their feedback.
  23. I am pretty sure you can have the estate provide provenance for a published strip.
