  1. I put on the blindfold, threw the darts, and submitted whatever grades came up on the board.
  2. The way the last two rounds have gone, I would have been better off grading with my eyes closed!
  3. Happy Halloween to all my fellow graders..... My grades (for what they are worth) have been submitted.
  4. Mike, Thank you for the reminder. I should be able to look at these and get grades (guesses / wild, absurd guesses) to you this afternoon. Thank you, again.
  5. I am not sure what service to use anymore. I used to believe USPS was great. Then I received this in the mail and it made me sick to my stomach.... I guess at least it wasn't stolen. I do want to say that I feel bad for the OP and hope every boardie will keep their eyes open for this easily identifiable book.
  6. I wanted to thank you for this post (and not via just a “thanks” emoji). Posts like this are what I like about the boards. Stories about how comics have impacted a person. Stories about the “good old days” of print catalogs and picking “alternates”. Stories of perhaps a simpler time. Yea, the internet is awesome and has made finding those “hidden treasures” and “hard to find” items easier, however, many times I miss those days of “the hunt”. Those days when filling that hole in the collection took “work”. When that print catalog came in and I would quickly thumb through the pages to see what I could find (and afford). I could go on, however, this is not about my younger days, but rather just a thank you for your post and for reminding me once more of those days gone by. Those days, whose remembrance, bring me a smile. I wish the boards were full of more posts like yours. Thank you!
  7. I tend to agree with you here. I am a big fan of free speech and believe that Disney and other companies should be allowed to put out content as they deem appropriate. I also believe that we have an absolute right to turn the TV off or choose not to spend money to see their movies. It is unfortunate that Disney chooses to go down that road, but regretably these are the times in which we live. I am dating myself here, however, I remember when Disney put out their first PG movie (good trivia question) in 1979 and how offended people were. Now, people would laugh if anyone was upset by a PG movie. I find that writers put the "F" word in for "shock value", however, in truth it is typically the result of poor writing; an inability to express something without relying on the use of overused, single syllable cuss words? It is sad that writers are incapable of creating the desired effect without falling back to this (over and over again); perhaps a comment on our eduacation system - IDK. Just my 2 cents (which is probably worth far less than that in today's world).
  8. I think one other thing we can look at is how many copies are for sale. I just did a quick search on eBay and found the following. Action 242 3 raw copies (2 with covers and 1 without) 16 slabbed (15 CGC and 1 other) 19 Total Books Action 252 3 raw copies 30 slabbed (24 CGC and 6 other) This leads me to believe that you may be correct in that there are more copies of 252 in existence than copies of 242. After all there are almost 58% more 252s for sale than 242s (at least on eBay - which I think is a good indicator). I wonder, however, what this does to the overall model. In the case of 242, we can say that 16 out of 19 books were slabbed or more than 84%. In the case of 252 the number is even higher with 30 out 33 being slabbed or almost 91%. I agree that people selling books have more of an incentive to grade them than those not selling them, so I don't think 91% of ALL 252s are slabbed, however, I question if when looking at a key book like that the multiple should really be at 3 (suggesting only 1/3 or 33.3% of the total copies have been slabbed). Just some "food for thought" or perhaps another piece of data that could help us narrow down what the actual numbers are.
  9. I appreciate your analysis of this and for taking the time to write out the logic behind your conclusions. I was especially interested in your thoughts on Actions from the late 50's. I see you estimate Action 252 at 3,000. I think it is interesting that Action 242 has only 565 graded copies as opposed to 1,131 for Action 252. Given these books are both "keys", simialar in value, and were printed less than a year apart, I would think the print runs were approximately the same and the survival rate about the same. Would you put Action 242 also at 3,000? I am curious if you believe the fact that Supergirl being introduced and put on the cover may have changed the survival rate. Did more females buy this book or more males keep it? IDK. For a long time, I have always thought that Actions from the late 50's had an upward survival rate of about 2,000, however, I appreciate your reasoning and obvioulsy I could be mistaken. Thank you again, for your thoughts and step by step logic. Well done.
  10. Any chance you will be putting up what appears to be an America's Best #27 (seen in the top right corner of the photos)????
  11. I tend to agree. I am just wondering if anyone has actually purchased one of these and proved it to be fake. Or if someone knows for a fact that, for one reason or another, that these cannot be "real" (what he claims them to be)?
  12. I noticed this person selling what he claims is original transparencies used in the production of comics. I am more than a bit skeptical and a quick search shows that there has been at least some discussion of this eBay seller here on the boards. Can anyone say for sure if what this person is selling is "fake" or "not what he claims"? Seems strange that this person seems to continually have these up for auction - an almost endless supply. IDK.
  13. @Buzzetta Thank you for taking the time to write this up and attempting to keep the boards "safe".
  14. Thank you for your service. This country is here because of people like you Great photos.
  15. Would like to read this. I know the art would be great.
  16. Yes, unfortunately many great books have moved to the overpriced auctioned venues. Happy to see some board members still offering cool stuff here. Thank you, Sharon. In fact, I purchased my Katy #1 here on the boards, thanks to a boardie who offered it here first.
  17. I agree. I know it is not politically correct to say or perhaps even suggest this, however, at some point people have to take responsibility for their own actions or lack of actions. Mike works hard to run a fun and fair contest. He gives people 4 days to submit their grades. I know we all get busy and forget things. I also know that this contest is probably not the top priority in anyone’s life. However, with all that being said, I think adding further responsibility to Mike (by having him go through all the people in the contest and send out reminders) is not really equitable to Mike (who is already trying to do a good thing). Giving people 96 hours to “remember” to send in grades seems very reasonable to me. Again, I may be in the minority here with my politically incorrect view regarding people taking responsibility for things, but I guess I will just have to live with that; old fashion as I am.
  18. Sorry. Submitted. Can't help you with the other 29 people (I can only hope these are people at the top of the charts who have decided to drop out and give the rest of us a chance)
  19. Well if 19 people fail to submit each round, maybe I have a chance. Two bullseyes this round - Not great, but could be worse.
