Not referring to any particular dealer, piece or price... but I've been very wary to participate in any discussion regarding the $$$ for a certain piece whether before or after it sells.  I'm not following sales closely so my opinion would be worthless.

After all, the only price that really matters to me is what I've actually paid for a piece.  Or the price of something I've sold (it's been a while).  If I'm an underbidder or also-ran or non-buyer, well that was my state of mind and state of my finances.

For me to have an actual opinion on a price before or after a sale, it feels like I'm spending someoneelse's money.  If something sells for X, I might think "Wow, that's a lot of $$$".  But I highly doubt I would think "Yeah, that sounds right, it's worth the $$$".  This stuff is still a luxury.

Of course, I don't mind paying less.

If you're the underbidder on a piece that gets bid up to a dealer that then sits unsold on their website for years...

  2. Was fortunate to pick up some nice pieces and I enjoyed looking at all the art but some of these prices are bonkos. If I can buy a commission from an artist for $150 who is buying a pre-done one for double or more that price? OA pages that go for $150-300 listed for $900 or more and then obviously not selling.

I am looking forward to the next one where I can hopefully find a piece or two in my price range.

  3. My state was one of the first to enact these tax changes and I surprisingly received a large 1099 from PayPal for sales but there's a "yard sale exception" where if this isn't a frequent occurrence or your job you don't need to claim the money as income. Found this out after going through everything and organizing a spreadsheet with original prices and deductions for supplies and shipping.

Looking for Resurrection Man OA. Covers and interior art from RM #1 (1997) are top priority but will also consider any other nice looking Butch Guice pages.

PM if you have any for sale.

    This seller has a ton of them;

I've bought other pages from him in the past and it was a smooth transaction.

I've never seen monoprints being called 'original art'. Maybe they've been called 'Artists proofs' but the fact that it's a print of digital work is often clearly stated. I don't think any dealer would dare risk their reputation by making such a claim.

The reps give heavy sales pitches about them being original art since the artists don't work in a "traditional medium". They're never misrepresenting what it is but it's being pitched as the same

Dauterman cover auction ended at $95, 79% loss from the original price tag.  Haven’t seen a lot of monoprints on the auction sites so could be an outlier, but much lower finish than I would have expected,

The mono prints being called original art always reminded me of the phrase, "don't pee on my head and tell me it's raining"

How is this not fraud on their part? They charge for this service. Fedex did this to me with a massive 23k Hildebrandt painting, just leaned against the front wall of my house, no knock, no signature. And note that places like collectinsure typically require the signature. Fortunately I was home that day in anticipation.

All of the shipping companies have been doing it under the guise of covid. Fedex and UPS offer the ability to have a package held for pickup if you have an account under their website. USPS has their informed delivery site that tells you what mail and packages are coming.

Nonsense. There is some very good, inexpensive work. Splitting inks from pencils works to your advantage, getting you in the game at half the price.
Hobbies are supposed to be fun; spending gobs of money on this stuff just isn’t fun to me.

Don't fight it, come join us!

  9. I'm trying to complete two books and have 14 pages of one and 18 of the other. Neither are particularly expensive, pages were $50-200 each depending upon if they came from the artist or rep/auction site. If I needed one last page and it was a bit more than that I wouldn't mind but if someone wanted $1,000 I'd just live with that hole for the time being.

I disagree. That dude just lost $300, that's all. Everyone else sees it but him :)

The only crime in this case is that "for not wanting to go negative" nobody tells said newb how badly they got reamed and to never do business with "whoever" again ;)

In a vacuum yes but when two or three new people are overpaying it sets a new benchmark that everyone else is now living with.
