  1. Wonderful presentation with Alfred there donning the "helmet". Hilarious.
  2. It looks like those Nazis are surrendering, but the Conqueror is gonna gun them down anyway! Is it a war crime to kill surrendering Nazis though?
  3. Such a clean copy to make a scan from! Lucky you.
  4. Look at the figure. The face is a dead giveaway. Compare him to the Adventure 36 and 39 figures. Also the inking. Who else was doing cover work for DC at that same time? Flessel, Guardineer, O'Mealia? There's not enough resemblance to any of them except Flessel, but Flessel has a bolder line and he signs his stuff. Maybe I should edit together cropped images of the faces so that it is easier to see that these covers are done by the same hand. A lot of the problem with identifying Flanagan is that there were so few comics printed with his art. You would have to be a general paper-nerd and have a cross-collection of more than just comics to find some of his other stuff. Check out his non-comic stuff over on Comicartfans.com (Goodhousekeeping, Blue Book, Colliers, etc).
  5. Here's More Fun #45. This issue was the first Flanagan cover I was able to acquire.
  6. Those background characters on Brides Romances are the give-away. Could be that the inker took too much initiative on some loose pencils. Look at the last few years of Baker art. He really loosened his inking. Manhunt is a good example.
  7. Sweet books Rick! That DS28 would rate higher for me if not for that man's HUGE eyebrow. And the elusive TAR44! So awesome. My current submission has been in "verified" status for a week now.... I've got two copies of DS15 in the batch (really enjoy that issue).
  8. I ordered several issues from 30th Century Comics and from what I have received I have narrowed the Lion issues to Sept. 28, 1963 through Feb. 22, 1964. I am still unable to verify the starting issue (either Sept. 28 or Oct. 5). I have also found that the King's Musketeers is the same story as the Man in the Iron Mask. The title changed between the Oct. 5, 1963 issue and the Nov. 9, 1963 issue (I don't have the issues between).
  9. Just throw some tape on the spine. It doesn't count as restoration!
  10. Very good to know that you care about the resulting quality. I'll look into Flashback Replicas!!! THANK YOU!
  11. Who won the Cinderella Love 26 on C-link? I'm jealous.
  12. Oh wow. What a grab! #3 and 8 are my favorite covers. Congratulations!
  13. I was going to suggest that AFTER we pick a top ten (including books we may not own), we should THEN create our individual collection top tens. I don't know how to make a poll either.
  14. HOLY MOLY!! That's a posting! I'll take them! Here's my DS30 (I wanna be in the club!):
  15. I didn't realize DS13 was so tough. My copy is in the batch I just submitted to CGC. Cover separated from lower staple, but presents very nicely. I'll let everyone know what this submission batch grade out at when I know. Throw some grades at me!
  16. That's a good example. I guess I won't be submitting high grade remainders if they can only achieve a 0.5. Maybe I need to look into restoration. THANK YOU!
  17. HAHA. After that he gave up and just filled in the lampshade....
  18. Is it the shadow cast by the cabinet across the folding curtains?
  19. I like that idea of putting both qualified and standard grades on the label. What do remaindered/return copies grade at (title logo of the cover cut off and missing)? 1.0? I assume it hurts the grade most since it's such a glaring defect. What grade level does the remainder copy need to achieve in order to gain Qualified status? Above 5.0?
  20. Alright, this officially sucks. Trying to pick only ten REALLY hurt. Here we go (in alphabetical order): 1. Authentic Police Cases #7 2. Cinderella Love #25 3. Cinderella Love #27 4. Diary Secrets #16 5. Diary Secrets #25 6. Going Steady #10 7. Phantom Lady #18 8. Teen-age Romances #32 9. Teen-age Romances #43 10. Wartime Romances #3
  21. Which copy has better page quality? Perhaps if your coverless has white pages then move the cover over there (a simpler process than an interior page). Popping staples is difficult without damaging the book, especially with old St Johns (newsprint). Then you have to worry about alignment. I would recommend NOT trimming. Collectors seem to hate that and it really devalues the book. I took staples out of a St John that had been rusting, flattened all the pages to undo spine roll, and finally refolded the whole book. It looks a lot better and now I won't have to worry about rust. I did not put the staples back (which should result in a qualified grade if I were to have it graded). I do have boxes of 1950's staples that could probably fool CGC if I was worried about a qualified grade, but I don't mind qualified books at all. Who cares about staples in a slabbed book anyway? I am very curious what book you are considering working on. Share? Perhaps I've got an extra to sell you....
  22. Benson's book (Confessions, Romances, Secrets and Temptations) has a checklist of all the St John stuff, and that's one which is handy enough. Gonna get my shovel out and do some digging here...
  23. I've got it, but it's buried under stacks of comics!!!
