  1. I don't see any point in consigning to a local shop unless you have an ongoing business relationship with them. For 10%, Mycomicshop gives you access to the largest website plus ebay. Your local shop will charge more for much less exposure. Be careful with any consignment agreement. Many include clauses that make the shop not responsible for damages or thefts of your merchandise. Avoid those. Two places I highly recommend for consignments are Mycomicshop and High Grade Comics. Both are very quick in paying you when a book sells.
  2. You can send them to get stabbed, wait six months and lay out two grand to discover 90% of them will sell for less than you "invested" in them. Or you can sell the whole box and look at it as finding two Ben Franklin's instead of the box.
  3. A very simple rule of thumb is to do a quick ebay search of sold books. Often, you can find stabbed copies for less than it will cost you to slab your books. There should be decent money in your books. Just don't allow anyone to cherry pick your collection. I'd start by selling the cheaper stuff first. There is a learning curve to selling books and best make your mistakes on the cheap stuff. Have you inspected the books? A lot of comic boards need replacing after twenty years. You might consider upgrading some books to mullets with new boards.
  4. Jerry Bails is what pops into my mind. He and the guy from the Rutland Parade were the only two fans I ever read of.

    WW 200 For Under $200

Nice book. Do people really factor in registry points when considering if a book is a good deal?
  6. There was an article in NY Newsday about a US Customs raid that ,among many other things included counterfeit Marvel Comics. This was about five years ago. I actually called the reporter and left him three messages wanting more information but he wouldn't return my calls. I still have no idea if the article was accurate or if they meant tshirts of Marvel characters or something.
  7. It's much easier to counterfeit black and white comics.
  8. The Direct copy( without the upc code) was sold on a non returnable basis to comic shops while the UPC version was distributed on a fully returnable basis to newsstands and non comic shops.
  9. Around 1984 he signed one for a friend. He even inscribed it. It said something to the effect of- here is a fake autograph for a fake book, Thanks , John Byrne. Back in those days, he was fun. So was his wife.
  10. It's a big tent, there is room for everybody. All are welcome.
  11. Why? I once was over 90% done with a 12 cent Marvel set. Was at a show and found a dealer who had several books I needed. As I gathered them I realized I was about to lay out silly money for books I was only buying to check off a book from a list. What works better? Three copies of FF 45 or a run of FF 21-44? It's a personal choice but I have decided it makes more sense to buy multiple copies of a book I want rather than buy books I need to fill in a run. When I was going thru my Tales to Astonish box this week, I was thinking that I should have bought multiple copies of #44 instead of issues 41,42, and 43.
  12. From a business point of view, you should pass. However, have you considered that selling comics can be every much of a hobby as simply collecting them.
  13. My rule of thumb is nothing over 40 pounds, and I try to keep them under 25. Been to too many lost package auctions to risk one hundred pounds.
  14. I've had a 1982 Teen Titans #1 since it walked into my shop in 1985. Last year, I opened it to see the paper quality and saw it was signed by Perez and Wolfman. I bought a bunch of books from Tom DeFalcos brother and one of them had Julius Schwartz's signature on the splash.
  15. If you honestly think they screwed up, file an insurance claim.
  16. "Most of 110 boxes"could be 100 boxes or 60 boxes. In any event, after some discussion, I'm out.
  17. A general inventory would suffice for now. X number of boxes of silver, Y number of bronze, etc, etc. Are they organized in any way? Fifty boxes organized alpha numerically is worth more to me than 110 random boxes, as an example. I'd think this information would be useful for any potential buyer but if you want to pm it, that works.
  18. I'm interested, but need to see some kind of inventory list. Are these in a storage unit that I could pick up the rent and leave them for a few months?
  19. I came across some Digest sized graphic novels featuring Iron Man and friends written for young kids. These might be better for an eight year old, although I have no experience with buying for one.
  20. Both those sites are owned by Diamond. Hakes has been around forever, DIG is run by the son of the owner of Diamond and is only about a year old.
  21. It takes practice and in all honesty, isn't all that practical.
