  1. another day, another Golden Age Action,. Just got this one back from CGC, I'm very happy with the grade.. most of the defects are on the back..
  2. there's an episode of Seinfeld, where Elaine's current boyfriend, played by Dan Cortez, is injured while rock climbing with George and Kramer, George brings him Superman comics as get well gifts while he's recovering,,, the only one I can make out is one of those 4-Superman Steel, Superboy, Eradicator, and Cyborg .... comics, I think it might be the Steel issue, it's just got the "S" symbol on it,
  3. I don't know the official reason, but my guess would be it was due to the positioning of Superman's right arm coming across his chest, that Joe Shuster didn't think he had enough room or whatever to put the "S" shield there.
  4. awesome book Brian, this is the famous, " S left off chest " issue, right ??
  5. I wasn't either, I mean I'd love to have it, but there are many other issues I intend on getting first.. like I say, I wasn't even negotiating, I had already blown my bank for the day, and was just perusing the books and he said here you can take it out if you want, well...I did, it was cool to flip through the 11th appearance of Superman ever ! anywhere !
  6. yeah, that's the same book, Terryscomics has it, didn't know they've had it since Chicago though, he was really trying to sell it, he had it listed at $1400 I believe, and came down to $1000 and I wasn't even really looking to buy it, I had already blown $950 on my Action #46, but he said I could check it out, so I did, took it out opened it up and flipped through it, (very carefully of course) it's got nice pages as well, it's a decent 4.0 copy. has some initials in pen on the cover I believe, but pretty solid book, it's so far the oldest one I've held in my paws..
  7. nice book Matt, at least the missing chunk is on the back, nice addition to the collection
  8. , good question, it's hard to pick just one, but for non-Supes covers I'd probably say, # 2 and # 16 I like alot , and the Zatarra # 12 and # 14, I can't pick a favorite. I held in my hands a number 11 at the Mid-Ohio Con, and these covers are much cooler when you see them in person..
  9. don't worry, Durden's got that one as well, great #29 by the way Brian..and yes, there are great Action covers other than the war covers..
  10. I would definitely buy it, can't see much of the pages, but they seem to look OK, depending on what the back looks like, looks like a sweet book !
  11. looks good to me, possible 6.0, what are they asking for it ?
  12. thanks guys, yeah when I saw it on the back wall at my LCS, I was like wow, this thing is a really nice book, then the owner told me that the cover was detached, and I was like "ah man", but then I just kept looking, and the pages were nice too, I feel they are white, but obviously they are off-white to white according to PGX, and the back cover is clean, he wanted $300, but I offered him $200 (thinking that he would counter with $250, but he didn't,) he said since the cover was detached that he would take $200, so then I just couldn't pass it up, plus if I ever upgrade I'm fairly sure I could get my investment back on this one.
  13. this is my #63 that I just got back from PGX, it's the first book I've ever sent to PGX, and so far, I can say I'm very happy with their service, quick return time, nice inner well design (no SCS), I'm happy with the grade as well, this one I got from my LCS, it's a really nice copy except for the cover is detached, it's one of those WWII one staple issues, if the cover was attached it may have been a 6.0 or so, who knows, this is one of my top 3 favorite Action war covers, love this book.
  14. hahaha that's funny !! please tell me they don't let Newt near the Golden Age books.
  15. I can, I sent you a PM with my guess, I don't want to spoil it for everyone.
  16. ah Durden, you never forget your first... I wonder who "Billie York" was..
  17. I'd actually rather own thedude's 4.0 than this copy. It's a nice, clean copy. ah, thanks NearMint, (by the way, it's a 4.5 ) NearMints got some awesome Actions and Superman books, amoung other books, really great stuff.
  18. great cover Bob, you got that from Meto at Chicago Con right ?
  19. so how much you guys think that Superman #14 6.5 in the Heritage auction will go for ?? I predict...$2,200 or so, based on the last one that sold in 5.0 for $1,500.
  20. well, you can NEVER go wrong with 14 and 24- those classic covers will always be in high demand. I would think that everything- actions and superman- were easier to find 15 years ago, no? I've been told that the Actions are harder to find overall due to lower print runs. I think 2/3 the print run of Supes? Personally, I just don't have the moxie to put together a collection of high grade stuff. I'm happier with a larger collection of midgrades. Besides, I'm generally not impressed with the diffference between an 8.5 and a 9.2, for arguments sake. When it gets to that kind of condition discrepancy demanding multiples on price, my brains leak out of my ears. I couldn't agree more, I look at overall eye appeal moreso than CGC grade, if a book is a 4.0 or whatever, but looks nicer, I'll pick it up, us GA collectors don't need to worry too much about grades over 8.5 anyway. and your right the Actions had lower print runs than the Supermans..
  21. let me say that I got extremely lucky with my Supes #14, I got it back in Aug, and at that time Metro had a 6.5 -off-white copy as well and they sold there's for $2,750. I paid slightly, just slightly over half of that price, thanks to a tip from a fellow board member who I will be indebted to forever. here's a pic if you want to see it.. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b165/toedude/Superman14.jpg
