  1. WOW! Really fantastic page!! Now I'm really jones-ing for a copy. That looks to be some of Everett's finest work from that period. Thanks for posting that page as well, Steve. I just love Everett's dramatic lettering, and staging ... that page is just beautiful.
  2. I don't know if you mean the entire page or just the top title tier but my favorite aspect of this page is the middle tier where Everett carefully captured each characters and nailed their physical expressions and positions. Understated and effective. Simply wonderful. I mean the whole dang thing, but you are dead-on about the middle tier .... beautiful line work and shading. Great expressions. And I love Everett's signature!! um, anyone want to sell me a copy of 2/7??
  3. Wow, thanks so much Jon B. and Steve... thats wonderful. Great, now I want a copy... That style looks very different from Everett's Submariner work or even A-MAN... I love it!! (I'm a big fan of the black and white and red color scheme of these early Centaurs) I guess it is several months before MARVEL #1. What a great looking splash ... thanks for posting that, Steve! I know you only do it to make me squirm! I LOVE these Centaurs... they never cease to surprise me!
  4. I can't answer the question, but I did notice the "meet the artist" feature in one of my copies. It reminded (in a good way) of what EC did some 15 years later. Was Centaur the first company to feature it's creative staff this way? I would think they were one of the first to have an "artist" feature... its a very cool "extra" in some of the Centaurs (esp. for an Everett fan like me).... now I just have to find a "Frank Thomas" Meet the Artist feature! Its cool that the artists do a self portrait to accompany the article...
  5. I'm hoping maybe one of you "completionists" can help me out... I was reading the Bill Everett bio in the front of my AMAZING MYSTERY FUNNIES vol2/#11 ("Meet the Artist"), and it mentions that he did a strip called "C-20 Mystery" for Centaur. I have no recollection of that strip being mentioned in any reference books, or Overstreet, etc. Its definitely not in any comics that I have. I know Everett did "A-MAN", "Dirk the Demon" and "Skyrocket Steele", but the "C-20 Mystery" is a new one on me. CentaurMan, Jon Berk... does this ring a bell?? I am facsinated by the idea that there is a Bill Everett strip I don't know about!! Maybe the strip appeared in KEEN DETECTIVE? Anyone? Anyone?? (Who will be the first to claim the "Centaur No-Prize"?)
  6. Hmmm... I would be inclined to pick up the G condition one for $800, and get the cover re-attached, and then have some dough left over to purchase another early Marvel Mystery! I think if it was a favorite cover of mine, I might be inclined to pay more for it, but its not, so I wouldn't. Don't know if one is a better deal or not, but I tend to go for lower end "pricey" books (i.e.: if the GOOD guide value is $1000 or over, chances are I'll be buying the GOOD copy).
  7. Thats a sweet copy!! Nice condition for ANY book of that age, but for a DETECTIVE #1...
  8. batman Batman BATMAN!! All the way. There's just no comparison for me between a silver key and a golden age key.
  9. You mean the volume 2/#9? I think CLINK has an affordable copy available ... it seems like there are at least four copies of that comic available on any given day. CLINK: http://comiclink.com/itemdetail.asp?back...y&id=629337 Sorry, I thought you meant vol. 2/#9, not vol.1 /#9.
  10. I, on the other hand, would love to track down a #24! I just missed the Crippen copy on Heritage...

  12. And lastly (this one is for Ciorac, for posting his #1 issue that made me go on a mad hunt), a DETECTIVE EYE #2, with a great Frank Thomas (there it is) diving cover. Three EYE SEES stories in this issue (at least one of which is a reprint)... I have to say I'm very happy with this one. Bit of dried something-or-other on the cover, but overall, very nice. Just love the underwater cover... Got my reading cut out for me for a while!
  13. Secondly, a KEEN DETECTIVE FUNNIES #23... great art inside of this one, including (my favorite), THE EYE SEES! by Frank Thomas (yes, his name will come up yet again...)
  14. OK, the last two days were banner days for Centaurs! Three arrived: First, AMAZING MYSTERY FUNNIES 2/11, a great robot cover by Frank Thomas!! And inside, a fantastic FANTOM story by Gustavson featuring giant robots! It is top notch (grades a VF w/ slight glue on cover):
  15. Very true ... though not the same caliber of art as KDF 20, it is still strong, odd, and has the classic EYE motif!! I'd hit the button, but I already own one. Am just loving the Centaurs these days... stay tuned, I just got a fresh batch in this week!
  16. It guides for $140 VG, so its priced at almost double (as are other comics from this dealer)... BUT, it is a desirable issue, with a great cover. I agree with him, I think its undervalued. On the other hand, this likes like a pretty beat up VG... solid though.
  17. I just noticed this lower grade KEEN DETECTIVE FUNNIES #18 up on Ebay... great EYE SEES cover and story inside. I have bought from the seller before, he was good to deal with: http://cgi.ebay.com/KEEN-DETECTIVE-FUNNI...VQQcmdZViewItem harder to find issue! Ryan
  18. I don't know, but I agree it's sure got a unique look. I'm hoping Ryan or someone else experienced in art will be able to give some insight into it. Another gem, CentaurMan!! I don't even recall that cover from Gerber. The layout is very unique for Centaur ... a nice variation. In terms of the coloring technique, I'm really not sure... at first glance to me, it almost looks like it was done with watercolor. The reason I say that is the brush stroke-type look in the blanket. It could be that combined with colored pencil (some of the texture in the cover looks like colored pencil). It is a freak amongst comic covers, regardless!! I love it. Sorry I can't be more definite. Are the Man o' War covers colored with that same look? I recall them being "textured", and not the standard flat color within the black lines. CM, feel free to PM me a list of your "wanted" books ... I can keep my eyes open.
  19. I have to say, the art in RED RAVEN is much better than the PLANET (IMO)... And for my money, I would probably take the 7.0 with slight restoration in most cases. RE: the FMV questions, I have no idea... haven't seen many RED RAVEN's for sale, except one high grade copy on CLINK and METRO each. Collectors seem hot and cold on RED RAVEN, few are lukewarm... a lot don't "get" the appeal. ( for me, the "one shot", rarity, two Kirby stories, oddball nature of the book adds up to plenty of appeal)
  20. I paid exactly the same amount for these books this past year ... the RED RAVEN is about a F/VF, with slight restoration ( support at bottom staple, cover detached at top staple, very minor color touch), while the PLANET #1 is a G/VG, with no restoration (cover detached at top staple). Which would you pick? the RED RAVEN...
  21. Just a *spoon* for that book? No, he's *28 piece formal place setting of gold-plated sterling*
  22. hello all... now, I am a newbie to centaurs, but that is the everett cover with the native looking swordsmen cutting up other natives on a temple type steps, with the "queen" standing in front of the green dragon thingie... rick That would be the one. This copy came my way via the estate of Centaur artist Claire Moe...just for reference of course ("Ach no, it's that shameless show-off again!") STEVE Steve, you are a *spoon*.

  24. hello all... I do want to thank all the above mentioned (and Jon, whom I believe started this thread) for opening up my somewhat previously closed DC mind, to the wonderful world of Centaur!...after viewing 78 pages of previously posted books, I have a myriad of choices to make, most of which you all already own, so no comp for me now, must, learn, to, resist, "timelys"... rick And may I add, Rick, don't even THINK of acquiring an AMAZING MYSTERY FUNNIES vol 2/#5 before I get one!!
