What does everyone think of the relatively high number of very high value comics being flipped in the recent past with big losses? Need for cash, not reading the market correctly or something more ominous?
anyone with the wherewithal to gather these books ain’t likely to be dumb or unaware of market conditions. I like to think the sale of these big books simply marks the end of someone’s odyssey thru the collecting arc. When the thrill is gone, just let em go, no matter what the music is doing at the time.
But then again, of course, I can’t discount the “ominous” part of your query(as the world moves toward electronic images and away from good old fashioned printed media, the effects will blow back on the funny book business, blah blah blah)
and as AJD says below, I don’t think we know yet how the market is going to treat these high grade big books. The Action 1 seems to be doing just fine. The 9.2 Cap 1 is still low, but the slugfest is just warming up

This is the link to the GoFundMe that was set up for Bob's daughter Katy to pay for Bob's final expenses and to help her, as she uprooted herself across the country to take care of her dad in his final months, quitting her job, and only starting a new one the day he passed. Paul Levitz, Doc V, Neil Gaiman, Steve Englehart, and many others have stepped up to the plate to help out. They are very close to their stated goal, and it would be nice if the CGC boards could put them over the top.

the irony here is inescapable. I always thought Bob got into book trouble due to his desperate attempts to fund his daughter’s medical needs, and I admired him for his strong sense of responsibility to family. so it’s only fitting that it’s come to this.
im happy to give, same as to jimjum

I have Bob to thank for turning me on to underground comics. Bob taught me how to pronounce Alex Toth's name (rhymes with "both"). Bob gave me my first lesson on EC history. Bob had us out to his place in Fremont, Nebraska just to see a complete GA Superman and Action collection.
And one time, Bob was set up at a comic show, alone as usual. He was, at that time, apparently under the misimpression that I worked for Dean Phillips at Krypton Comics. He needed to smoke and pee, so he grabbed my arm, dragged me to his booth, and told me to watch it. If memory serves, I even sold a cheap book for him. When Bob got back, he immediately accused me of either allowing a comic to be stolen, or stealing it myself. When I was finally allowed to explain that I did not work for Dean, the entire matter was dropped. I assure you, nothing of any consequence was stolen on my watch. I related the story to Dean, and he was not surprised. Apparently, Bob liked to use that tactic to mitigate debt he had with Dean.
There is good and bad to all of us, but there is no doubt that my life is a little better for having known Bob Beerbohm.
This is crazy. But I guess it represents the dual nature of the human condition.
Bob was so driven to preserve comics history that he would tape his interviews of the greats, and he should be lauded for this. That the same man was also capable of this conduct to you, KirbyJack, is astonishing

I sold Ian my Detective comics 3 for 11k in 2004 and I was going to bid but had to finish a break job just got home and it sold for 6k
I just got in touch with Ian, earlier and he said they all went for far less than he paid.
Sorry you missed it woo woo.
Is Ian the consignor? I’m sorry for my ignorance, but I don’t know the backstory

I thought there were a LOT of strong prices. But there were a few deals to be had, and I'm glad I got one.
Oh, I’m sorry. It’s the Tec 1 you got. Great job!

My friend Bob Wayne just notified me of Bob Beerbohm's passing yesterday which seemed a bit odd only because he'd just responded to a FB posting very recently, either yesterday or the day before. Those who knew Bob or of Bob, knew him as a cantankerous sort and often stubborn, but a devoted comics fan and a historian ...albeit controversial... on the subject of comics for many years. This probably belongs in the notices section, but most from the GA side rarely venture over to General and this is where he's most known by legend especially to those who ran afoul of his passionate beliefs which he held onto like a junkyard dog. Bob was a devoted family man, collector and comic dealer, active from the late 60's on in the Bay area for many years. His writings, while often contentious, were filled with information and well researched, even when he may have reached conclusions not agreed with by consensus. His dedication to the hobby and advocacy will be missed. Obadiah Oldbuck will have a new chapter with Bob's arrival.
Rest In Peace, dude!
Well put, Cat. 71 is too young. RIP, Mr. Beerbohm

I already posted my thoughts on it. It is no doubt OA-like defensive/price-support bidding by other Action 1 investors.

From what I recall reading (and I had to re-search for it to make sure I was remembering correctly), CGC gave (will give?) GA comics with very minor color touch or glue a pass in that they would get a blue label but would still note the color touch/glue on the label. I think it was under their discretion, so I don't know what the exact criteria would be for determining whether it would be blue or not for color touch or glue. I've seen a few of these in the past. As a matter of fact there were threads on this forum about it with examples.
I hear ya. I’ve seen and owned those labels before. I just never knew it meant multiple tear seals and multiple color touches, all on the same cover. Foolish me thought it was one and done(which is still too many for a blue)

Because the ink used in the label absorbed the red and green waves from the visible light spectrum, and the blue waves were picked up by the blue-sensitive cones in our eyeballs.
I feel it’s my purple sensitive cones shoulda been triggered

You got this from the man, the legend, the ultimate comic guru, Gator! I leave my New Force stickers on too, as a sign of respect. And yes, this copy of Bat 11 is a great one

I was about to bid on this one, because that front cover is beautiful. But of course no back cover is posted, which is worrisome.
so i went to CGC, who now posts both front and back covers on their newly graded books.
and there it is: the back cover.
I think this will go better in someone else’s collection
