People have more money than they know what to do with it. While the pandemic has been crippling for many, there are a lot of people who have a lot more disposable income than ever before since it cannot be spent on restaurants, trips, yachts, or cocaine parties. The money has to go somewhere, and its going to NFTs, high end collectibles and all other sorts. Comics happen to be in these asset based investment categories that is getting this unused money. So you have more demand and the same supply as last year, so the prices were bound to go up. We'll see what happens when money can be spent on leisure activities again.

Is that the case for all newstands? Like even first Jubilee? -
Moderns that are heating up on ebay!

I'm sorry WUT ?! My dealer friend has long boxes full of X-Men 282. I find it hard to believe demand finally caught up to the ungodly supply of that book. -
Am I crazy or is this not a CGC 9.8?
William-James88 replied to Brainiac Supreme's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
The issues with the corners are allowed on a 9.8 since they are factory defects and not due to wear so if those are part of your complaint, then yes you are crazy. I don't like the upper one though since it looks like wear from handling which would not be allowed on a 9.8 so you wouldn't be crazy for reporting that one. Please post in the "ask CGC forum" to report to CGC. -
Universal Grading on Signed comics
William-James88 replied to Devin Colman's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I love Jim Shooter. I had a similar experience 2 years ago, just talking away in a bar. Didn't get his autograph though, but the memory is just as good if not better. And as a big Transformers fan, it was like meeting God, the creator. Awesome stuff. As for your grading question, it's up to you. Here are the numbers: Grading will set you back at least $40 if you are sending just that one book (if you send more, then you save on combined shipping). The amount of points deducted for a signature varies wildly. It could come back 9.2, for instance. That would make your comic worth about $20 So would you be ok with spending more money on grading than what your comic is worth? -

Pressing For Noobs
William-James88 replied to Devin Colman's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
But if you don't know how to grade then a quick press wont help you since you probably gave a bunch of comics that can't get 9.8 even with a quick press. The only way to guarantee your comic comic back in a 9.8 holder is to opt for the 9.8 screening. -
Pressing For Noobs
William-James88 replied to Devin Colman's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
It wasn't. A comic is either a 9.8 or 9.9 or 10 candidate, it cannot be a candidate to more than one of those, ever. Here are the rules: 9.8: No wear whatsoever, manufacturing imperfections allowed 9.9: No wear whatsoever, minimal manufacturing imperfections allowed 10: No wear whatsoever, no manufacturing imperfections allowed (including anything every so slightly off centre) If you got a 9.8, then that's the highest you could have ever gotten it. -

Dammit, why did CGC remove the laugh emoji?! -
Pressing For Noobs
William-James88 replied to Devin Colman's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
yes, exactly that. Hence why many moderns that were read once and then put in a bag and board are great pressing candidates -
Pressing For Noobs
William-James88 replied to Devin Colman's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
That is incorrect. Pressing is best for modern comics since those are the ones that are more likely to end up with a 9.8. Many off the stands are around 9.4 due to handling but could be brought to a 9.8 after a press -
A press will make it look better for sure, but won't improve the grade at all since the worst defect are the colour breaking creases. I would guess this book would get anything between a 6.0 and 7.0

To press or not to press ???
William-James88 replied to DaveProsch's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Yeah, I can see your dilema and for a noob question, this is a real good one. Indeed a quick press after being screened for a 9.8 is USELESS A 9.8 can never be pressed into a 9.9 because both a 9.8 and 9.9 have no wear, meaning nothing that can be pressed out to improve the grade. And yes, there is a way to get a book pressed before grading. That's what I do. I sent my books to a reputable professional who then presses the book (and checks for restoration, which is always good for non modern books) and then handles the CGC submission for me. You even get a dealer discount. Feel free to send me a PM if you want the contact info. -

That's fine. Hopefully the upset people take their business elsewhere and the lower TATs for those sticking around. You aren't forced to keep using CGC. If you want to keep using CGC (after knowing this), then this is what you'll have to put up with. Your choice. And I don't just mean you, I mean that to everyone reading. I made my choice of sending my comics to CGC rather than CBCS for instance and I don't expect them back for 6 months. Also: -

So it seems there is a loooot of money being thrown at whichever direction at the moment. Be it comics, cards, original art, you name it. But have you heard of NFTs? That is also original art in an encrypted form that only you can ever look at. The encryption process uses the same computer power needed for blockchains (ie Bitcoin mining). And the money being driven that way is just as high as all the money being pumped into other hobbies and collectibles. For instance, here are some sales figures for an auction featuring NFTs of Wonderwoman drawn by José Delbo. The auction raised 1.85 million dollars. The highest NFT went for $136,000. And remember, this is not actual physical original art, but a digital piece of artwork that only you can acces. https://cointelegraph.com/news/former-dc-comic-book-artist-fetches-1-85m-auctioning-wonder-woman-nfts?fbclid=IwAR3xo0SzUnyflX4fSYW8d2DCm3Si1aJNvq4Ynfbw8nsrMC46KvvT33_xHlM

Weird and confusion
William-James88 replied to JollyComics's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I did not precise that so we'll see. I don't really mind them overlooking it though since there is a great big "canadian edition" on the cover. I don't mind the book speaking for itself.
