  1. I'm sure there is a thread here concerning Superman Day at the '39 World's Fair - and even a link to some colour film of an actor dressed as Superman on top of a pretty high float. I'll dig around . . .
  2. I'll see your "True Comics" and raise you a "Real Life": Edit: Neglected to mention that this was purchased via Ted of Superworld fame
  3. Oh dear. You have a problem here. You have this book and I want it Seriously, this is great. A never-seen-before-by-me Churchill cover Why is he called "Varnoff" however? Time line fits a European based war cover too - January 1942 cover date, but likely written well before Pearl Harbour. Me really likey.
  4. Good Job Shazza - I'm just testing like everyone else . . .
  5. I know things will (probably) work out fine, but I keep flashing on the recycling centre scene towards the end of "Toy Story 3". "Let's all hold hands" . . .
  6. The Dells go up to #263. He should go after them all! PLEASE do not encourage him
  7. Yes. Way after the show closed and booths were being broken down. CCTV confirms this. Still don't understand the earlier thread pulling . . .
  8. Yeah, "The Man" has really laid it all out here. Lots of parallels with me - except for the breadth and depth of the collection(s) Comics, cards (sport and non-sport), toys, coins, stamps LPs and a few other things are hereabouts at my place. I really like the Board Games. Great art both on the box and the playing surface. The beauty of those as collectibles is that they can be had for peanuts - when found. Never had a great interest in milk bottles. Beer cans and soft drink bottles, on the other hand . . .
  9. Absent Andrew, I'll tell lies fill in until he gets back. AJD is attempting a WDC&S run 1-100. Its progress can be checked by referring to his sig line - which I do not do often enough as like most folk here I have sigs turned off. As to Four Colors, the answer is no. AJD will tell you he only picks up the "ones he likes". This is fair enough until an examination of his Want Lists reveals great swathes of "ungapped" runs. He has also got some great War Bonds covers and a very nice Oz Fiction House reprint selection. All of which he claims "fits in a short box" Hope this helps.
  10. "Surly" One of the Seven Duffs, the only one that speaks, and I should know. Great pic
  11. Prior to acceptance, I think you should entertain counter-offers, Brian
  12. And come in spinner - I refused to take the bait
  13. No backgrounds? Yup, Vince Colletta is involved. He has a reputation for, *ahem*, "abbreviating" backgrounds. I'd really like to know what the Kirby pencils for this cover were before inking - but I doubt that's possible now. I actually like Colletta's inks (heretic!), where applied, but he didn't seem to be able to work fast enough (or just got a little lazy) when it came to inking ALL of a particular pencilled page. You are right about "breath of fresh air" Hercules, a much needed counterpoint to Thor's "Sturm and Drang".
  14. I loathe pages missing and coupons cut with a vengeance - but this is something very different. It's sweet thinking of the original owner, WWII most definitely uppermost in their mind, completing (and then not sending off) the entry form. Delightful find
  15. ASM #32 is part two of the best comics arc of all time. I hope your next journal entry concerns #33 - no spoilers here - but a really satisfying conclusion to a fantastic trilogy. Lee and Ditko at their very best.
  16. I reckon Scout is trying to get at those small, flightless birds and the wrecked decorations are simply collateral damage.
  17. I missed the passing of "Ace" Hepcat. Condolences. The passing of a pet is very, very hard.
  18. Story goes that Madonna did not authorise her "likeness" with regard to that figure. Chaos ensues and all "Blank" figures are pulled. That's my understanding - any other versions?
  19. And those prices... Those prices were outrageous in 1969! We never bought from Howard because we couldn't afford it back then; when you only had $5. to spend on comics (this was the mid seventies) you would look to other sources in the Buyer's Guide to stretch your limited collection dollars. Which raises an interesting point. I bought a lot of books from Howard and Robert Bell "back in the day". Why didn't I go the Buyer's Guide route? Tyranny of distance. I had a subscription to the Buyer's Guide, but they were always sent surface, taking 6 weeks to get here (when sent at all) and all the "deals" were long over by the time I got the mag. Oh, and forget phoning - International calls were horrendously expensive back then. Howard and Bob sent me via air mail their catalogues. I distinctly remember not even remitting the cost of posting them initially (pointless sending a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope from my end). They took a pretty cheap punt, and although I knew they were more expensive I also knew they were therefore likely to have what I wanted still available. Worked well for years. I remember Bob Bell had the option to pay an additional dollar and he'd "express process" the order. Back then, I'd get the books 15 days after posting the bank cheque in US funds usually drawn on the Chemical Bank. Exchange rate was fantastic then too - $US1.00 =$AUS0.67. So a $US10 comic cost me $AUS6.70. I'm starting to ramble, but I know I kept the Bell and Rogofsky lists. Just can't find them
  20. Here's a link to a post that concerns Phil: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1645622&fpart=1 A little time before you got to the Boards, Bob.
  21. Lastly, here are the cursed die-cut cards. This is the state in which they are usually found, a "border" torn from around the subject so that the card can be "stood up". Why one would want to stand the things up, I have no idea. Here are a few more I have managed to find "unmolested".
  22. Next are examples of the "crest" cards. Really boring, but so essential (and expensive) for the completest:
