  1. GREAT books jaydog Very rare, hard to find, and relatively cheap when they are available. The Sherlock Holmes book intrigues me. It has a Buenos Aires imprint, so is there a chance it's Spanish, not French? i.e. Argentinian?
  2. Let me get this straight. Not only have you, you Yankee Carpetbagger Robot Man, been plundering collectables from the wide brown land, you've been pinching our women too? This is an outrage Tell me, was the Phantom button the dowry/bride price? This is customary here. My own missus arrived with a "Famous First Edition Detective 27". Like her, it wasn't highly sought, very valuable or mint, but still presented well.
  3. If it's a sig(nature) line you're after, it's addressed in the stickied noob thread in General. Here's a link and a copy/paste: "Make sure your images/scans are all the same size before uploading. I generally keep my scans exactly at 640 x 1024. 4. Very cool books. I think this is the first time I've ever seen an Australian Bugs Bunny comic. Why is Elmer wearing Bugs' gloves? Why does Bugs have red gloves? Weighty matters indeed . . .
  5. This is an interesting comic, if one is into conspiracy theories. Legend has it that Archie publisher John L. Goldwater was so incensed at this parody (of Archie) that he threw his not inconsiderable weight behind the movement to establish the "Comics Code". Looking at the Mad publishing timeline and the date of the establishment of the CCA it does hold up - as a theory.
  6. I think Art Cappello attended the "Stan Lee School of Signature Placement".
  7. Great junk as usual, RM Could this beanie have been a premium/promotion associated with the rather strange "The Good Humor Man" film of 1950? I seem to recall the kids in it had beanies that resemble this one.
  8. Ahhh Charlton. The red-headed stepchild of comic book publishers. Except for Lightning. And M.F. Enterprises. And Fitzgerald . I love them for all the right and wrong reasons. When they were good, they were very very good, viz: Ditko's Blue Beetle's and Question's. When they were bad, they were so bad they were good - viz: the following - Peacemaker #5 Nothing much here. All good. Then: OK, it's a ship. Normal, 20th Century tramp steamer. Next page. Yup, complete change of ship. Now a "Galleon" of indeterminate breeding. It's this sort of attention to detail at all levels, editorial, artistic and writing that made them a laughing stock. I still love Charltons. And I've got a lot of them.
  9. Ah... Tarzan's grip. I can almost smell the acetone. Really bad for sticking together plastic model kits, but otherwise a good all-purpose glue. Send Bob a tube so he can check for himself
  10. Lovely Whitman Fiction House books, Hepcat. I have a preference for his "technical" books (Planets, Jet Aces etc) over the Jungle books which (to my eye) are pretty much GGA on replay. With many of the covers, I keep seeing a strong Eisner influence, specifically in the faces and some of the (feminine) poses. Is it just me, or is there a chance he had something to do with them (inking, layout, whatever)? GCD, of course, denies my assertions, but still . . .
  11. Wow! Look at all the teeth! Except for Colossus. Not sure what's going on there.
  12. Porc, if you are referring to "Adventures of the Jaguar" #1, I've already got a serviceable copy. If you meant the "Origin of the Black Hood" in Archie's Superhero Digest #2 - I'm listening . . .
  13. "In the Toils of the Maestro"? "Toils" And where's the best of the Mighty Crusaders run, #4, "Too Many Super Heroes"?
  14. Early on the question wasn't "Beatles" or "Stones" it was "Elvis" or "Beatles": Here's a "Beatles at Carnegie Hall". Odd kinda thing, in that it was printed in England in 1964 - and this one has a 3/- Australian price printed. A price variant. . .
  15. High grade, pedigreed books with date stamps - doesn't get much better Now, as to content, have you read this one? Incredibly bad, the title story ("The Lady and the Fly") is every bit as exciting as the thrilling cover would indicate. Suspense! Mystery! Intrigue! None of these descriptors apply. Just awful. But a great book
  16. Penny and the Rolling Stones? I don't think so, Ann Margret, and that brazen hussy is headed to Las Vegas and a rendezvous with Elvis. Great thread. I have something to contribute relevant to this pop music area.
  17. Thanks for the tip, Porc (thumbs u As to the digest, I am still looking for one
  18. Thank you! Now, this is a run I have been working on for YEARS. Still need a few to finish it. I've found it to be brutally difficult in higher grades, even the issues as recent as those from 1963! Have you managed to score any higher grade copies? How about Adventures of the Jaguar? Great stuff! That's what I like to hear. (thumbs u High grade Archie superhero books? Impossible in anything 8.0 or above. I'm just happy to get a complete copy. "Adventures of the Jaguar"? Still need a couple for the run. I have finished off the Archie "Shadow" (just terrible at any level - art, story, editorial direction, those involved had NO idea). Also run and done is the much better "Mighty Crusaders". One of the first books I bought off the stands (yes, I am aware this dates me ) was Mighty Crusaders #4, with the resurrection of a heap of GA MLJ heroes. Boy, was I both confused and "interested". Tell me, Hepcat, what holes does the boss still have in his runs?
  19. I do enjoy looking at your books Hepcat - usually excellent grades and a wonderfully eclectic selection. Now, this is a run I have been working on for YEARS. Still need a few to finish it. The stories, though, were so uneven in quality as to make some issues unreadable. Pets? I'm a dog guy. Lost two last year and have just replaced them with two more rescue dogs. Labradors. A two year old black and an 8 month old chocolate, both desexed males. Nothing quite like the joy of establishing who is "Top Dog".
  20. Great rare item, unseen by most, terrific pickup yada yada yada BUT you have to tell me what kind of search algorithm on eBay produces this in the search result. "Comics" is just too broad - even "Harvey + Comics" would produce a large search field. Are you really looking for "Mechanical Pencils"? "Babe Ruth"? This enquiring mind would like to know.
  21. Nice pick! I could see why once in your hand, you'd not want to flip it after all. Captivating cover there. +1. Nice rich colors, and I really like that lady! I wonder if her face and pose were swiped from a then-current screen star's photo... she is drawn with a lot more nuance than the guys. I had a similar thought - very reminiscent of then screen siren Mae West - especially the "hand on hip" pose.
  22. Not much luck with this one, but I have a feeling it'll be another ACG book's internal panel. Will report back later.
  23. See, there's this thing called Google Image Cover is Operation Peril #13 an ACG offering.
  24. What's great is that even then you knew enough to keep the boxes the trains came in.
  25. There are any number of reprints (Lord knows I have a couple) therefore no need to crack. Great pick up
